Book Northern Europe and the Future of the EU

Download or read book Northern Europe and the Future of the EU written by Helge Hoibraaten and published by BWV Verlag. This book was released on 2012-01-01 with total page 236 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: HauptbeschreibungThe current relationship between the Nordic countries and the European Union appears complex and confusing. Although Denmark, in 1973, and Sweden and Finland, in 1995, joined the European Union, the entry of Norway into the Union was rejected in the plebiscites of 1972 and 1994. Furthermore, Nordic EU members enjoy permanent exceptions to their integration into the EU: Denmark and Sweden, like the U.K., have declined to become part of the monetary union. Finland is essentially the only Nordic country that entered the EU without substantial exceptions. A membership bid from Iceland was unthinkable; after the fi nancial crisis - which is not the topic of this book - Iceland applied for membership in 2010 and has been in discussions with the European Commission ever since. In other words: the European Union divides Nordic societies, which has resulted in a series of national exceptions to the integration process. Taken together, these exceptions have created an integration process whose overall geometry is contradictory and paradoxical. Considering this melange, this book will discuss the actual state of Nordic integration into the EU from many different perspectives and illuminate future developments in the fi eld of integration. Where is the North relative to Europe today? How can the geometry of Northern Europe's integration, developed over a long time, be characterised? What are the challenges that threaten further development of Nordic-European relationships?

Book Prospective Europeans

Download or read book Prospective Europeans written by John Redmond and published by . This book was released on 1994 with total page 232 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is concerned with the future shape of Europe in the post 1992, post Maastricht era. The Community has been using the single market programme and the Maastricht treaty as a means of deflecting, or at least delaying dealing with, the attentions of its immediate neighbours. The various initiatives that have been undertaken - the European Economic Area with EFTA, the Europe agreements with Poland, Hungary and Czecho/Slovakia and the redirection of the EC's Mediterranean policy - have provided only partial and temporary responses. The fundamental issue of where the boundary of the European Community should end remains to be settled. In this book, the authors provide an examination of the underlying issues and the current state of play regarding likely future enlargement of the EC, and consider each of the principal, actual, or potential applicant countries in turn.

Book The Political Future of the European Economic Area

Download or read book The Political Future of the European Economic Area written by John Erik Fossum and published by . This book was released on 2022 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The purpose of this paper is to discuss the political future of the European Economic Area (EEA). The paper starts by providing a brief overview of the EEA (Section 2). Next, it discusses the factors affecting the future of the EEA from the vantage-point of Norway (Section 3). The Norwegian political system contains a set of gag-rules to prevent changes in the status quo of EU affiliation. What such gag rules imply for the EEA's future is important to address. Thereafter, the paper discusses the factors affecting the future of the EEA from the vantage-point of the EU (Section 4). Penultimately, the paper considers possible trajectories for the EU-level's development. Conclusively, the paper provides a brief assessment of the similarities and differences between the EEA and such alternatives as EU-UKTCA, the Swiss Model, and the Comprehensive Economic and Trade Agreement between the EU and Canada (CETA) (Section 5).

Book The New European Economy

Download or read book The New European Economy written by Loukas Tsoukalis and published by Oxford University Press, USA. This book was released on 1991 with total page 360 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Many changes have occurred in Europe in the last few years, with more developments arising in light of the unification of the European economic market in 1992. This volume scrutinizes the process of economic integration in Western Europe and its gradual emergence as a new regional entity. Tsoukalis identifies some distinguishing features of this economy as well as the outstanding issues as 1992 approaches. Strongly oriented toward policy, the book contributes to the debate about the nature and future of European economic development, without neglecting the wider political ramifications of the issues.

Book Europeanization and the European Economic Area

Download or read book Europeanization and the European Economic Area written by Johanna Jonsdottir and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2013 with total page 242 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book examines Europeanization in the European Economic Area (EEA), exploring whether non-member states can have an input into EU decision-making and whether the EU can successfully export its policies within the framework of the EEA. Iceland, Norway and Liechtenstein, while not EU member states, are members of the European Free Trade Association (EFTA) and signatories of the EEA Agreement. The Agreement allows participation in the EU’s internal market but also requires extensive and continuous adaptation to EU rules. Whilst existing literature is limited mainly to the EU’s impact on its own member states or neighbours to the east, this book extends the study of Europeanization to the EEA, exploring whether Iceland, as a non-member state, can have an input into EU decision-making and, conversely, whether the EU can ensure that its policies are adhered to outside of its borders. The author argues that, although the EEA Agreement is not without its challenges, it has proved considerably more resilient than originally expected. This raises the question of whether the EEA provides a realistic alternative to EU membership for other states with close ties to the EU. Delving into the largely unknown intersection between the EU and the EEA and providing important new insights into the Europeanization process, Europeanization and the European Economic Area will be of strong interest to students and scholars of European Union politics and policy-making, European Union Enlargement, Nordic politics and comparative politics.
