Book A 500 House in Detroit

Download or read book A 500 House in Detroit written by Drew Philp and published by Simon and Schuster. This book was released on 2017-04-11 with total page 283 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A young college grad buys a house in Detroit for $500 and attempts to restore it—and his new neighborhood—to its original glory in this “deeply felt, sharply observed personal quest to create meaning and community out of the fallen…A standout” (Kirkus Reviews, starred review). Drew Philp, an idealistic college student from a working-class Michigan family, decides to live where he can make a difference. He sets his sights on Detroit, the failed metropolis of abandoned buildings, widespread poverty, and rampant crime. Arriving with no job, no friends, and no money, Philp buys a ramshackle house for five hundred dollars in the east side neighborhood known as Poletown. The roomy Queen Anne he now owns is little more than a clapboard shell on a crumbling brick foundation, missing windows, heat, water, electricity, and a functional roof. A $500 House in Detroit is Philp’s raw and earnest account of rebuilding everything but the frame of his house, nail by nail and room by room. “Philp is a great storyteller…[and his] engrossing” (Booklist) tale is also of a young man finding his footing in the city, the country, and his own generation. We witness his concept of Detroit shift, expand, and evolve as his plan to save the city gives way to a life forged from political meaning, personal connection, and collective purpose. As he assimilates into the community of Detroiters around him, Philp guides readers through the city’s vibrant history and engages in urgent conversations about gentrification, racial tensions, and class warfare. Part social history, part brash generational statement, part comeback story, A $500 House in Detroit “shines [in its depiction of] the ‘radical neighborliness’ of ordinary people in desperate circumstances” (Publishers Weekly). This is an unforgettable, intimate account of the tentative revival of an American city and a glimpse at a new way forward for generations to come.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A wily lady thief is groomed for mafia infamy in this “masterpiece of diabolical design” from the author of Deadman (The New York Times Book Review). Helen Sedlacek thought that when she stole millions from the mob, she’d be running for the rest of her life. So she’s more than a little surprised when mob boss Humphrey DiEbola offers her a job. DiEbola claims that he’s looking to retire. With an eye for ruthless talent, he wants to groom Helen for an executive position by putting her in charge of his illegal cigar factory and seeing what she can do. But when a poker game at DiEbola’s home turns into a shooting gallery, all bets are suddenly off in the Detroit underworld. And police detective “Fang” Mulheisen has to figure out all the angles. Is Helen gaining ground for herself and her gun-happy boyfriend Joe Service? Or is someone else trying to take the entire city for themselves—leaving the competition dead in the streets? This gutsy entry in “one of the wildest and wittiest crime series going” reaffirms Jackson’s place among the greats of thrilling police fiction (Publishers Weekly).

  • Publisher : Bloomsbury Publishing USA
  • Release : 2016-07-05
  • ISBN : 1632863634
  • Pages : 435 pages

Download or read book Angels of Detroit written by Christopher Hebert and published by Bloomsbury Publishing USA. This book was released on 2016-07-05 with total page 435 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Once an example of American industrial might, Detroit has gone bankrupt, its streets dark, its storefronts vacant. Miles of city blocks lie empty, saplings growing through the cracked foundations of abandoned buildings. In razor-sharp, beguiling prose, Angels of Detroit draws us into the lives of multiple characters struggling to define their futures in this desolate landscape: a scrappy group of activists trying to save the city with placards and protests; a curious child who knows the blighted city as her own personal playground; an elderly great-grandmother eking out a community garden in an oil-soaked patch of dirt; a carpenter with an explosive idea of how to give the city a new start; a confused idealist who has stumbled into debt to a human trafficker; a weary corporate executive who believes she is doing right by the city she remembers at its prime--each of their desires is distinct, and their visions for a better city are on a collision course. In this propulsive, masterfully plotted epic, an urban wasteland whose history is plagued with riots and unrest is reimagined as an ambiguous new frontier--a site of tenacity and possible hope. Driven by struggle and suspense, and shot through with a startling empathy, Christopher Hebert's magnificent second novel unspools an American story for our time.

Th e first one, a gynecologist, keeps her waiting for 3 months before he does a D & C, and by way of a biopsy, finds out she has cervical cancer. At first he is going to do a radical hysterectomy, changes his mind, and dumps her on a radiologist with a non-existent Stage IC diagnosis report. A year later, the cancer had metastasized. She receives chemotherapy and becomes very religious. The tumors disappear and she believes she is healed. However, three months later her health deteriorates, again. The husband and Dolores meet a lady cured of lung cancer by a strict metabolic diet and Laetrile pills. This happens while he is on a 3 month tour of duty assignment at Fort Hood, Texas as a civilian engineer for the US Army Tank-Automotive Command. On her advice and a talk with the doctor in Mexico they take a chance to cure Dolores with a trip to Clinica Cydel in Tijuana. After a few days of Laetrile treatment, but inability to hold down food, Dolores collapses and she is hospitalized at Dr. Contreras Hospital del Mar. She is put on a plane from San Diego to Detroit 3 weeks later, but rapidly breaks down in health. Her last day out, she attends a faithful Christian service conducted by evangelist Nora Lam. Dolores expires 4 months later.

Book Shackleton s Whiskey

  • Author : Archer Kelly
  • Publisher : Outskirts Press
  • Release : 2023-11-23
  • ISBN : 1977270670
  • Pages : 239 pages

Download or read book Shackleton s Whiskey written by Archer Kelly and published by Outskirts Press. This book was released on 2023-11-23 with total page 239 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A bottle of whiskey has been stolen. But it’s not just any bottle: it’s incredibly old and incredibly priceless. And its previous owner isn’t just any connoisseur: he’s a powerful tech mogul with black-market shopping habits. He’ll do anything—anything—to get that bottle back. Retired and enjoying the beach life, former Detroit police detective Oliver Savage is dragged back onto the job to find the thief and retrieve the bottle. Instead, he finds himself neck deep in a boozy pool of greed, betrayal, and murder that’s about way more than a little whiskey. Author Archer Kelly is exactly like the readers of Shackleton’s Whiskey: passionate about spy and crime novels. That commitment is obvious on every page of this story. Kelly had a lot of fun creating Savage, tough, intelligent, and elegant—Frank Sinatra if Old Blue Eyes had been a detective—as well as crafting the twisty, turning, thrilling plot. You’ll have just as much fun reading it.
