Book Easy Steps in Latin Classic Reprint

Download or read book Easy Steps in Latin Classic Reprint written by Mary Hamer and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-01-14 with total page 192 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Easy Steps in Latin The increased demands upon the time of pupils preparing for college have for a long time pointed to the need of a book for beginners in Latin, with a reduction in the amount of daily work required and a corresponding increase in the thoroughness of the memory work. This need has been still further emphasized by the introduction of Latin into grammar schools, a practice that has already found favor in many cities, the great drawback to its universal adoption being the unwillingness of grammar school teachers to attempt new work without Clear and simple outlines, and equal unwilling ness on the part of high school teachers to undertake further work with pupils, some well, others ill prepared. To meet these conditions, if possible, this book has been planned, not attempting to give all that is valuable, but furnishing enough to give pupils a comfortable introduction to the language, emphasizing its relation to English and the learning of paradigms rather than the reading of many sentences. These lessons, accordingly, are very short, most of them being adapted to an hour of preparation and half an hour of recitation, with the understanding that the memoriter recitations shall be absolutely accurate and rapid, an indispensable condition for future work. Book Ritchie s First Steps in Latin Classic Reprint

Download or read book Ritchie s First Steps in Latin Classic Reprint written by Francis Ritchie and published by . This book was released on 2015-06-29 with total page 122 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Ritchie's First Steps in Latin The present edition of Mr. Ritchie's "First Steps in Latin" has for its objects - first, the marking of all long vowels; second, the rearrangement of the cases in declension, following the order adopted in nearly all American text-books and grammars; and third, the substitution of i-consonant for j. In cases where pupils have been found prone to give a long-vowel sound to a short vowel, the short mark has been written; but for the most part short vowels are unmarked. Some slight changes have been made in the wording of rules and explanations, and in the Appendix the Summary of Rules has been rewritten to conform with these changes. No alteration has been made in the general plan of the book. The subject of pronunciation, however, is of so much importance that it has been incorporated at some length in the text. Such excellent results have attended the use of the book in its earlier editions that even these slight changes have been made with some hesitation; but many requests have been made for an edition revised along the lines indicated above, and these must serve as my pretext. It is hoped that, thus revised, the Series, which comprises "First Steps in Latin" and its sequel, "Second Steps in Latin," will meet with a wide acceptance in this country, for, supplemented by Mr. Kirtland's edition of Mr. Ritchie's "Fabulae Faciles," they make a thorough and amply sufficient preparation for the reading of Caesar, or other second-year work. Book MacMillan s Shorter Latin Course Classic Reprint

Download or read book MacMillan s Shorter Latin Course Classic Reprint written by A. M. Cook and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-01 with total page 228 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Macmillan's Shorter Latin Course It has been shown by experience that elementary Latin books, to accomplish their purpose, must present the fundamental principles of the language and its system of inflections in the simplest and clearest form. They must also provide abundant means for the application of these principles and for practice in the use of inflected forms. With these characteristics there must be combined a natural and attractive development, so that difficulties may be readily overcome by reason of the very method in which they are approached. It is believed that the present work in its revised and enlarged form possesses these qualifications in an unusually large degree. The design has been to give only essential grammatical information, with the largest opportunity for practice. Attention is called to the selections for translation, inserted even in the early pages of the work. These narratives arouse the interest of the pupil, and neutralize whatever is detrimental in the fragmentary presentation of the language in the short sentences. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Latin Reader: Easy Selections for Beginners The way of the beginner in Latin is only too often confined to those subjects where the faculties of the mind, aside from memory, find little chance for devel opment. For a year pupils spend long hours in end less drill on the rules of grammar, on declensions and conjugations, and on the perplexities of syntax. It is not strange, therefore, that numerous attempts have been made to assist the beginner to an opportunity now and then for refreshing his mind, and at the same time for applying his new acquirements. Those have succeeded best, I believe, who have kept most closely to the things of antiquity, described °in the language of ancient Rome. Pupils recognize the modern tone of present-day topics discussed in English-like Latin, and they are not satisfied, nor are they much helped. The Fables in this Reader are the old ones, simpli fied for beginners. The Short Stories, gathered here and there, have also been freed from difficulties. The Tales of Early Rome are from Livy and have been adapted to pupils who have not yet gone far along the course. And, finally, although the selec tion from Ovid has been turned into prose and shorn of its grammatical difficulties, it is believed that the charm of the story itself has not suffered.
