The following are a few of the leading features of the work: 1. This volume is not a mere companion to the grammar, but a practical guide for the pupil in the work of reading, writing, and speaking Latin. It approaches the language on its practical side. The very first lesson, without a word of grammar, introduces the learner to complete Latin sentences with verb, subject, and object. Thus at the very outset he finds himself already using the language. He is not only reading Latin, but actually writing and speaking Latin. 2. The work is at once a Book of Latin Exercises, a Latin Reader, and a sufficient Grammar for the beginner. There is a growing conviction among teachers that the attempt to prepare boys to appreciate Caesar by means of a few short lessons and exercises is a failure - that to do this successfully requires a generous course in reading easy and interesting Latin. Indeed, in some schools it has been deemed wise to supplement the introductory Latin course by additional reading before entering upon the consecutive study of Latin authors. An attempt has accordingly been made to give this work sufficient size and scope to meet this reasonable demand.
