It seems to have been forgotten that grammar - like examinations - is a means, not an end. Grammar-books generally aim at being complete 3, hence books that are fit for masters and savants are put into the hands of school-boys and girls, and children are plagued with words and forms which are only to be found in grammars and dictionaries, and which will never be seen again during many years of reading. Public examiners add to the evil by setting papers upon the grammars in use; the new grammars are written to contain the odd words and rare exceptions which are asked in public examinations; and so, generations of boys and girls are led over this weary round, with the result that they spend eight or ten of their most valuable years, trying to master French gram mar, but never succeeding, and bearing towards French grammar in particular, and French in general, an unmixed hatred for the rest of their days. The school training in French of our boys and girls re sembles the fretful labour of the squirrel in his cage, and its results are as fruitful. Three, or four, or five hours a week are devoted to French between the ages of seven to fourteen, and four, or three, or two hours a week between the ages of fourteen and eighteen 3 this is a large amount of time 5 what is there to show for it? Very little, or at any rate, the result is far from proportionate to the time and trouble. The reason of it is that the principles in vogue are wrong: we have too much theory and too little practice. The time often spent in turning good English into poor French is believed to be worse than wasted, and prevents the rapid acquisition of a reading knowledge of the language. Written exercises in French are of great value and really indispensable, but they properly come later, after acquiring a considerable familiarity with the printed page. And these exercises need not be printed in a separate volume, but may be best taken from the French readers used, the student being trained in turning back into French what he has first translated into English. He thus writes with a correct model of construction constantly before him. This is of far more value than the labori ous construction of doubtful sentences by the aid of grammar and dictionary. All reference to pronunciation is omitted in this volume, simply because instruction upon this subject, to be of any practical value, must come from the lips of the living teacher, who should be either a native of France or one who has had much personal intercourse with educated French people. This knowledge cannot be imparted satisfactorily by any printed page. This little work, after many years of experience in teaching French, has been thoroughly tested by the practical work of the class-room, and it is earnestly commended to my fellow-teachers, in the hope that they may find it a practical and easy key to the delightful treasures of French literature. Advantage has been taken of such improvements as have taken place in the order of arrangement so as to fa cilitate the learner. The French Academy has been con sulted on the orthography in which many difficulties have been removed. The sound is now in a great measure the guide to the pronunciation, especially in words ending in ais, ois, as Anglais, Danois, paraitre, croitre, and the learner can adopt it as a rule of pronunciation. It has also been deemed necessary by that learned body, in order to maintain the derivation that words ending in (mt, em, should have their plural formed by the addition of an 3 without dropping the t as practiced by Some writers. Great pains have been taken to prevent the beginner from falling into idiomatic errors, whenever the two languages clash in their construction. A very ample table or contents is given, which the' learner cannot too well make himself acquainted with, as it is of great moment that he should not only know what the Book contains but where it is to be found.
