Book excerpt: Excerpt from Eastern Uganda: An Ethnological Survey If either of these aims is fulfilled I shall feel amply satisfied with the result. It would be presumptuous to suppose that my observations do more than touch the fringe of inquiry into the habits and customs of these interesting people. It is, however, very difficult to find out the why and wherefore of the various customs without a complete knowledge of the language of each group of people, and this is a point on which the average busy official fails owing to lack of time. Possibly in the near future, however, such studies may become the special work of a depart ment of the administration. At any rate it is to be hoped that every effort will be made to chronicle these features before they are obliterated by the advent of European civilization. I would here like to express my thanks to Sir H. H. Johnston, etc., and to Sir Clement Lloyd Hill, etc., for the kind interest and appreciation they have shown towards my work. Book Poverty and Wealth in East Africa

Download or read book Poverty and Wealth in East Africa written by Rhiannon Stephens and published by Duke University Press. This book was released on 2022-10-24 with total page 207 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In Poverty and Wealth in East Africa Rhiannon Stephens offers a conceptual history of how people living in eastern Uganda have sustained and changed their ways of thinking about wealth and poverty over the past two thousand years. This history serves as a powerful reminder that colonialism and capitalism did not introduce economic thought to this region and demonstrates that even in contexts of relative material equality between households, people invested intellectual energy in creating new ways to talk about the poor and the rich. Stephens uses an interdisciplinary approach to write this history for societies without written records before the nineteenth century. She reconstructs the words people spoke in different eras using the methods of comparative historical linguistics, overlaid with evidence from archaeology, climate science, oral traditions, and ethnography. Demonstrating the dynamism of people’s thinking about poverty and wealth in East Africa long before colonial conquest, Stephens challenges much of the received wisdom about the nature and existence of economic and social inequality in the region’s deeper past.

Book Ethnic Patriotism and the East African Revival

Download or read book Ethnic Patriotism and the East African Revival written by Derek R. Peterson and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2012-09-24 with total page 369 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Ethnic Patriotism and the East African Revival shows how, in the era of African political independence, cosmopolitan Christian converts struggled with East Africa's patriots over the definition of culture and community. The book traces the history of the East African Revival, an evangelical movement that spread through much of eastern and central Africa. Its converts offered a subversive reading of culture, disavowing their compatriots and disregarding their obligations to kin. They earned the ire of East Africa's patriots, who worked to root people in place as inheritors of ancestral wisdom. This book casts religious conversion in a new light: not as an inward reorientation of belief, but as a political action that opened up novel paths of self-narration and unsettled the inventions of tradition.

Book The Nature of Entrustment

Download or read book The Nature of Entrustment written by Parker MacDonald Shipton and published by Yale University Press. This book was released on 2007-01-01 with total page 311 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This groundbreaking book addresses issues of the keenest interest to anthropologists, specialists on Africa, and those concerned with international aid and development. Drawing on extensive research among the Luo people in western Kenya and abroad over many years, Parker Shipton provides an insightful general ethnography. In particular, he focuses closely on nonmonetary forms of exchange and entrustment, moving beyond anthropology's traditional understanding of gifts, loans, and reciprocity. He proposes a new view of the social and symbolic dimensions of economy over the full life course, including transfers between generations. He shows why the enduring cultural values and aspirations of East African people--and others around the world--complicate issues of credit, debt, and compensation. The book examines how the Luo assess obligations to intimates and strangers, including the dead and the not-yet-born. Borrowing, lending, and serial passing along have ritual, religious, and emotional dimensions no less than economic ones, Shipton shows, and insight into these connections demands a broad rethinking of all international aid plans and programs.
