Book A History and Study Vol 1 of 2 Classic Reprint

Download or read book A History and Study Vol 1 of 2 Classic Reprint written by Richard Jebb and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-12 with total page 450 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A History and Study, Vol. 1 of 2 The present work is primarily a history of the Imperial Conference "from the earliest times," i.e., from 1887, giving an account of the proceedings at each of the five meetings, and tracing the development of the Conference as a constitutional institution. It has been necessary to devote some space also to the events of the intervals between the meetings, in order to indicate both the connection between one meeting and another, and the nature of the difficulties with which the Conference has to grapple. But exigencies of space have precluded, for the present, any attempt to discuss in detail various important developments, in the later part of the period, which have either affected the future of the Conference or illustrated the problems to be solved by it. Among these might be mentioned the progress of the Preference movement throughout the Empire, and of the Defence movement; the Union of South Africa; Migration of European and Asiatic races within the Empire; the position in the West Indies, and the later phases of the Atlantic Fisheries dispute. In regard to the Pacific Cable, however, space has been found for a more complete treatment. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book A Middle East Mosaic

    Book Details:
  • Author : Bernard Lewis
  • Publisher : Modern Library
  • Release : 2007-12-18
  • ISBN : 0307430421
  • Pages : 495 pages

Download or read book A Middle East Mosaic written by Bernard Lewis and published by Modern Library. This book was released on 2007-12-18 with total page 495 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In times of war and in peace, from the earliest days of the Roman Empire to our own, Westerners have journeyed to the lands of the middle east, bringing back accounts of their adventures and impressions. Yet it was never a one way exchange. From the first Arab embassy to the Vikings in the 9th century to the internet musings of the Taliban, A Middle East Mosaic collects a rich, boisterous literature of cultural exchange. We see the American Revolution through the eyes of a Moroccan Ambassador and the French Revolution through a series of Imperial Ottoman proclamations. We find surprising portraits of Napoleon ("a brigand chief"), TE Lawrence and Ataturk. We learn what George Washington and Machiavelli through t of Turkish politics and hear Flaubert and Thackeray rail against eastern crime and punishment. We peer into Voltaire's business correspondence and follow the footsteps of Mark Twain, Richard Burton, Gertrude Bell and Ibn Battutta, the Marco Polo of the east. Great discoveries are recorded - an Egyptian Ambassador is introduced to electricity and dismisses the spectacle as "frankish trickery;" another pronounces the invention of a secure mail system most useful for assignations. We enter the harem with a 16th century organ maker and emerge with Ottoman reform. It was not until the sixteenth century that the first middle eastern rulers entered into diplomatic relations with European rulers, but trade often precede diplomatic relations. Business men from the days of the crusades against Saladin to the oil prospecting of Samuel Cox and his descendents have seen great possibilities in the markets of the middle east. And throughout the centuries we have been united by war. We witness the outbreak of the Crimean war with Karl Marx and enter Egypt with Napoleon. We observe Arab customs with George Patton and visit Baghdad and Cairo with George F. Kennan in the second world war. When Usama bin Ladin rails against "Jews and crusaders" occupying the holy land, he is rehearsing a grievance with a long history. This symphony of voices, full of wit and wisdom, spite and wonder, suspicion, befuddlement and occasional insight, is ordered and explained by our foremost living historian of the middle east. The fruit of a lifetime of scholarship and erudition, A Middle East Mosaic is a dazzling capstone to a brilliant career. In a spirited reappraisal of western views of the east and eastern views of the west over the last two thousand years, Bernard Lewis gives us a brilliant over-view of 2,000 years of commerce, diplomacy, war and exploration. This book is a delight, a treasury of stories drawn from letters, diaries and histories, but also from unpublished archives and previously untranslated accounts. Diplomats and interpreters, slaves, soldiers, pilgrims and missionaries, princes and spies, businessmen, doctors and priests all pour forth their stories of the people and events that shaped history. A Middle East Mosaic cannot fail to appeal to anyone with an appetite for history and a curiosity about the vagaries of cultural exchange.

Book The Eastern Mysteries

Download or read book The Eastern Mysteries written by David Allen Hulse and published by Llewellyn Worldwide. This book was released on 2000 with total page 662 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: UNLOCK THE MEANING OF EASTERN MAGICK In scope and clarity, there is no book that can compare to The Eastern Mysteries. This reissue of David Allen Hulse's landmark work is the one book all students of the occult must own. It catalogs and distills, in hundreds of tables of secret symbolism, the true import of each ancient Eastern magickal tradition. Each chapter is a key that unlocks the meaning behind one of the magickal languages. Through painstaking research and analysis, Hulse has accomplished an unprecedented feat -- that of reconstructing the basic underlying systems that form the vast legacy of mystery traditions. The real genius of this accomplishment is that it is presented in a way that is immediately understandable and usable. Although the book deals with many foreign scripts, ancient tongues, and lost symbols, it is designed for the beginning student. Included is a wealth of cross references, excellent introductory material and overviews, an extensive annotated bibliography, and -- new to this edition -- a complete index.

Book Birds of Eastern North America Classic Reprint

Download or read book Birds of Eastern North America Classic Reprint written by Chester A. Reed and published by . This book was released on 2015-06-30 with total page 470 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Birds of Eastern North America This volume is in reality but an extension of, an enlargement upon and a combining of the "show me" properties of "Bird Guide - Land Birds" and "Bird Guide - Water Birds." The kind reception and enormous sale of these smaller books have fully justified my belief that a good, accurate illustration is worth pages of text for conveying an idea of the appearance, of a bird or for identifying one seen in the field. My schooling in this line was gained in the time when an occasional inaccurate woodcut served only to relieve the monotony of the solid pages of text. In those days the birds were "collected" and, with the specimen in hand, it required only time to discover what it was, from the pages of the old reliable "Coues' Key." Birds were more plentiful then and bird students comparatively few. Obviously such methods are impossible now when the birds are fewer and students numbered by the hundreds of thousands. A good pair of bird glasses and a good book will enable the bird student now to see and identify hundreds of species, and that without harming the creatures in the least. In fact, several enthusiasts have written me that they became so familiar with the. birds by means of pictures that upon visiting new localities and seeing new birds they were able to correctly name nearly all at first sight without referring to a book. Bird study is not a fad. It is a recreation and a most useful one. Its importance is shown by the fact that it is one of the requirements of teachers in nearly all states.
