Book The East European Economies in the 1970s

Download or read book The East European Economies in the 1970s written by Alec Nove and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2013-10-22 with total page 368 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The East European Economies in the 1970s reviews the development of economic policy in Eastern Europe in the 1970s. This book includes individual country studies that compare and contrast both the aims of economic development and the results of the growth process, as well as the instruments employed in economic policy. More specifically, this book examines what has happened during the past decade after the fundamental changes in economic policy that occurred in the 1960s. This text is comprised of 10 chapters; the first of which provides a background on economic reform in Eastern Europe during the 1970s. Attention then turns to the economic policy, methods, and performance of the USSR after 1970. The chapters that follow focus on the German Democratic Republic, Poland, Czechoslovakia, Hungary, Bulgaria, Romania, and Yugoslavia. This book concludes with a discussion on the economic system of Albania in the 1970s, focusing on the country's conservative radicalism, agriculture, and sharp disputes on economic policy between 1974 and 1976. Throughout the book, the emphasis is on how the ""process of reconstruction within the system"" has led to increasing differentiation of aims, institutions, and instruments of economic policy between individual countries. This book will be of interest to political science students, political scientists, political economists, and policy analysts.

Book The Communist States in Disarray 1965 1971

Download or read book The Communist States in Disarray 1965 1971 written by Adam Bromke and published by U of Minnesota Press. This book was released on 1972 with total page 378 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Communist States in Disarray, 1965–1971 was first published in 1972. Minnesota Archive Editions uses digital technology to make long-unavailable books once again accessible, and are published unaltered from the original University of Minnesota Press editions. Through a survey and analysis of recent developments in the communist states and in their relations with one another and with other nations this volume provides a revealing picture of a changing communist world. Indeed, as the book makes clear, it is no longer appropriate to think of the communist countries as one world, since a major development during the period covered in this study has been the disintegration of the communist monolith and the reemergence of separate national entities in Eastern Europe. The sixteen chapters by fifteen contributors provide studies of the individual communist states as well as several chapter-length discussions of general trends and patterns. The contributors also project the likely course of developments for the rest of the 1970s. Throughout the book the twin themes of an aggregation of the Sino-Soviet conflict and the spread of nationalism point to the conclusion that the communist states are now in disarray. The contents: Patters of Political change, Teresa Rakowska-Harmstone; Polycentrism in Eastern Europe, Adam Bromke; The Sino-Soviet Dispute, John W. Strong; Czechoslovakia, H, Gordon Skilling; East Germany, Melvin Croan; Rumania, Gabriel Fischer; Yugoslavia, John C. Campbell; Albania, Peter R. Prifti; Outer Mongolia, Paul F. Langer; North Korea and North Vietnam, Paul F. Langer; Cuba, C. Ian Lumsden; Patterns of Economic Relations, Philip E. Uren; External Forces in Eastern Europe, Andrew Gyorgy.

Book Leadership in East European Communism 1945 1970

Download or read book Leadership in East European Communism 1945 1970 written by R. Barry Farrell and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2017-07-05 with total page 370 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Fifteen eminent social scientists from North America and Eastern Europe met under the auspices of Northwestern University's Comparative Politics Program to discuss the significance and characteristics of changes in political leadership in Eastern Europe and the Soviet Union since World War II. The presentations at the conference were edited and re-written following the discussion. They are incorporated into this comprehensive analysis of political leadership in European communist countries since World War II. This volume is divided up into four parts and fourteen different chapters. Part One examines the theoretical questions of leadership in European socialist countries. Part Two provides a factual perspective, including contemporary quantitative data and biographical analysis. Part Three discusses the interaction of the leadership and society. Jan Triska's concluding overview relates specific chapters to the informal discussions at the conference. Some of the notable contributions include "Historical Development of the Communist Theory of Leadership," Alfred G. Meyer; "The Theory of Political Leadership and the Issue of Totalitarianism," Carl J. Friedrich; "Marxist Theories of Leadership and Bureaucracy," Andras Hegedus; "Trends in Top Political Leadership in USSR," Frederick C. Barghoorn; "Representation of Career Types in Soviet Political Leadership," Frederic Fleron; "The Soviet Appartchiki," Michael P. Gehlen. Leadership in East European Communism, 1945-1970 is essential reading for students of comparative politics and the politics of East European socialist countries and the Soviet Union.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this new Brookings Marshall Paper, Michael O'Hanlon argues that now is the time for Western nations to negotiate a new security architecture for neutral countries in eastern Europe to stabilize the region and reduce the risks of war with Russia. He believes NATO expansion has gone far enough. The core concept of this new security architecture would be one of permanent neutrality. The countries in question collectively make a broken-up arc, from Europe's far north to its south: Finland and Sweden; Ukraine, Moldova, and Belarus; Georgia, Armenia, and Azerbaijan; and finally Cyprus plus Serbia, as well as possibly several other Balkan states. Discussion on the new framework should begin within NATO, followed by deliberation with the neutral countries themselves, and then formal negotiations with Russia. The new security architecture would require that Russia, like NATO, commit to help uphold the security of Ukraine, Georgia, Moldova, and other states in the region. Russia would have to withdraw its troops from those countries in a verifiable manner; after that, corresponding sanctions on Russia would be lifted. The neutral countries would retain their rights to participate in multilateral security operations on a scale comparable to what has been the case in the past, including even those operations that might be led by NATO. They could think of and describe themselves as Western states (or anything else, for that matter). If the European Union and they so wished in the future, they could join the EU. They would have complete sovereignty and self-determination in every sense of the word. But NATO would decide not to invite them into the alliance as members. Ideally, these nations would endorse and promote this concept themselves as a more practical way to ensure their security than the current situation or any other plausible alternative.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Inspired by the work of Ron Lesthaeghe, retired Belgian professor of demography and social science research methodology, this collection of contributions is also based on a conference entitled "Demographic Challenges for the 21st Century: A State of the Art in Demography." During Ron Lesthaeghe’s tenure, he established himself as a scholar, publishing highly influential work that changed the face of demography and founded the research group, Interface Demography. Most of his research was in the various subfields of demography: historical, social, and economic, and mainly covered populations of Europe and of sub-Saharan Africa. He also researched the fields of cultural change in Europe and of ethnic minority studies. This book offers a collection of tributes to his contribution to demography, presented by leading international demographers.

Book The Economic History of Central East and South East Europe

Download or read book The Economic History of Central East and South East Europe written by Matthias Morys and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2020-12-29 with total page 467 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The collapse of communism in Central, East and South-East Europe (CESEE) led to great hopes for the region and for Europe. A quarter of a century on, the picture is mixed: in many CESEE countries, the transformation process is incomplete, and the economic catch-up has taken longer than anticipated. The current situation has highlighted the need for a better understanding of the long-term political and economic implications of the Central, East and South-East European historical experience. This thematically organised text offers a clear and comprehensive guide to the economic history of CESEE from 1800 to the present day. Bringing together authors from both East and West, the book also draws on the cutting-edge research of a new generation of scholars from the CESEE region. Presenting a thoroughly modern overview of the history of the region, the text will be invaluable to students of economic history and CESEE area studies.
