Book The Great Rift Valleys of Pangea in Eastern North America Tectonics structure and volcanism

Download or read book The Great Rift Valleys of Pangea in Eastern North America Tectonics structure and volcanism written by Peter M. LeTourneau and published by Columbia University Press. This book was released on 2003 with total page 228 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The breakup of the Pangean supercontinent in the Triassic-Jurassic age left great rift basins containing an extraordinary record of the physical and biological conditions which precipitated a major extinction event at the time. These basins collectively form a rift province called the Central Atlantic Margin, which spans more than 45 degrees of paleolatitude and records over 35 million years of Earth history. Leading experts present a detailed review of the rift province's geology, paleobiology, and geophysics. This extensive two-volume work offers in-depth coverage of the North American components of the Central Atlantic Magmatic Province. In volume 1, leading researchers give thorough reviews and highlight recent advances in our understanding of the structural geology, tectonics, and volcanism of the Central Atlantic Magmatic Province.

Book 3D Multi scale Finite Element Analysis of the Present day Crustal State of Stress and the Recent Kinematic Behaviour of the Northern and Central Upper Rhine Graben

Download or read book 3D Multi scale Finite Element Analysis of the Present day Crustal State of Stress and the Recent Kinematic Behaviour of the Northern and Central Upper Rhine Graben written by Thies Buchmann and published by Logos Verlag Berlin GmbH. This book was released on 2008 with total page 258 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This thesis focuses on the contemporary stress state of a continental rift structure, the Upper Rhine Graben, and its present-day reactivation and kinematic behaviour. The graben is currently characterised by relatively slow tectonic deformation accompanied by low to medium seismicity and ongoing subsidence. In this context, the reactivation potential of pre-existing faults associated with the graben structure is one of the main goals of this thesis. Three dimensional finite element modelling is used for simulating the stress state of the study area. Based on the evaluation of the fault reactivation potential, a possible contribution of mechanical earth modelling to earthquake hazard assessment is also investigated. Another task of this thesis is the development of a method and work process for the construction of complex model geometries based on the different data types available. In order to establish a procedure that is independent of local computing and software facilities, the work-flow used is predominantly based on commercial software packages. A brief introduction is given on crustal stresses, their definition, determination and classification. Two approaches of shear failure reactivation evaluation, independent of the rheological parameter of fault surfaces, are discussed. In addition, a summary of the finite element method is given. This includes the influence of mesh quality and the implementation of contact problems as well as the ABAQUS implementation of the material models used (elasticity and elasto-plasticity). The thesis also refers to the approach of multi-scale modelling, nesting or sub-modelling using ABAQUS. The consequences of this approach on the boundary conditions and the model geometries are discussed.

Book Regional Stratigraphy of North America

Download or read book Regional Stratigraphy of North America written by W.J. Frazier and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-11-11 with total page 735 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An early reviewer of this book stated that he had difficulty assessing its marketability because it "falls between the cracks" of geological literature. We have designed this book to meet a need of modem geology: namely, a single source providing both detailed and synoptic stratigraphy of the various regions of North America, through geological time. Shortly after beginning work on such a book, we realized why it had not yet been written: it required six years of effort, assimilation of an incredible amount of information, and two years' additional work to cut the volume down to publishable size. Further, by the time the final chapter was written, the fIrst few were already out of date. Nevertheless, the book lies in front of you. It is intended to serve several purposes. As a textbook, it will serve the following courses: • Regional stratigraphy • Sedimentary tectonics • Regional tectonics • Advanced historical geology • Survey-level paleontology Obviously, not all portions of the book are relevant to all of the above courses. We assume the reader will retain this book after the particular course is done, and will use it as a reference book. Hopefully, others will obtain the book solely for reference purposes. We believe it will be especially useful for the working geologist or academic geologist seeking generalized and some moderately detailed information about a region or geological time interval which is unfamiliar.

Book Structure and Emplacement of High level Magmatic Systems

Download or read book Structure and Emplacement of High level Magmatic Systems written by Kenneth Thomson and published by Geological Society of London. This book was released on 2008 with total page 242 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: There are continual rounds of annual conferences, special sessions and other symposia that provide ample opportunity for researchers to convene and discuss igneous processes. However, the origin of laccoliths and sills continue to inspire and confound geologists. In one sense, this is surprising. After all, don't we know all we need to know about these rocks by now? As testified by the diverse range of topics covered in this volume, the answer is clearly 'no'. This book contains contributions on physical geology, igneous petrology, volcanology, structural geology, crustal mechanics and geophysics that cover the entire gambit of geological processes associated with the shallow emplacement of magma. High-level intrusions in sedimentary basins can also act as hydrocarbon reservoirs and as sources for thermal maturation. In drawing together a diversity of perspectives on the emplacement of sills, laccoliths and dykes we hope to advance further our understanding of their behaviour.
