Book excerpt: Belief in the resurrection of Jesus is central to the Christian faith. But how sure can we be that this belief is well-founded? In Easter Faith one of the most distinguished Catholic biblical scholars and theologians of our time draws on a lifetime's study and research to review the evidence for the credibility of the resurrection. The result is a lucid and elegant work that brings together biblical scholarship, theology, and lived experience into a unique and compelling portrait of the Easter faith of the Christian community. +

But a dead man coming back to life? In our sophisticated age, when myth has given way to science, who can take such a claim seriously? Some argue that Jesus never died on the cross. Conflicting accounts make the empty tomb seem suspect.sHow credible is the evidence for the resurrection? Focusing his award-winning skills as a legal journalist on history's most compelling enigma, Lee Strobel retraces the startling findings that led him from atheism to belief. Drawing on expert testimony first shared in his blockbuster book The Case for Christ, Strobel examines: The Medical Evidence -- Was Jesus' death a sham and his resurrection a hoax? The Evidence of the Missing Body -- Was Jesus' body really absent from his tomb? The Evidence of Appearances -- Was Jesus seen alive after his death on the cross? Written in a hard-hitting journalistic style, The Case for Easter probes the core issues of the resurrection. Jesus Christ, risen from the dead: superstitious myth or life-changing reality? The evidence is in. The verdict is up to you. Book jacket.

Book Passover and Easter

    Book Details:
  • Author : Paul F. Bradshaw

Download or read book Passover and Easter written by Paul F. Bradshaw and published by University of Notre Dame Pess. This book was released on 2000-02-15 with total page 257 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Passover and Easter constitute for Jews and Christians respectively the most important festivals of the year. Although sharing a common root, the feasts have developed in quite distinct ways in the two traditions, in part independently of one another and in part in reaction against the other. Following the pattern set in earlier volumes in this series, these two volumes bring together a group of distinguished Jewish and Christian scholars to explore the history of the two celebrations, paying particular attention to similarities and connections between them as well as to differences and contrasts. They not only present a convenient summary of current historical thought but also open up new perspectives on the evolution of these annual observances. Volume 5 in the series focuses especially on the origins and early development of the feasts and on the way that established practices have changed in recent years. Volume 6, also in the series, focuses on the contexts in which they occur—the periods of preparation for the feasts in the respective calendars and their connection to Shavuot/Pentecost—as well as to their traditional expression in art and music. At the same time, the essays raise some fundamental questions about the future. Have modern human beings so lost the sense of sacred time in their lives, for instance, that these great feasts can never again be what they once were for former generations of believers? And what about recent attempts by some Christians to enter into their heritage by celebrating a Jewish Seder as part of their annual Holy Week and Easter services? Specialists and general readers alike will find much to interest and challenge them within these two additions to what has become a highly regarded series in the world of liturgical scholarship.

Book Revisiting the Empty Tomb

Download or read book Revisiting the Empty Tomb written by Daniel Alan Smith and published by . This book was released on 2010 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "The Gospels disagree on what happened at the empty tomb: on who was there, and on what they saw or heard. The fact that our earliest written witness to the risen Christ, Paul, says nothing of the empty tomb has long provoked the question, what were the earliest believers saying about Easter, and what did they think it meant? Daniel A. Smith seeks to get behind the theological and apologetic concern to "prove" the resurrection and asks, where did the accounts of the early tomb come from, and what purpose did they originally serve? He shows that Paul is a valuable witness to the development of Easter traditions; that Q was already interested in connecting the disappearance of Jesus with his future role; that Mark was interested in the disappearance of Jesus, rather than in his restored presence as risen; and that both sources had interests different from the later Gospels. Chapters provide careful and insightful discussions of the earliest traditions about Jesus' disappearance; at last Smith draws significant implications for a theory of Christian origins." -- BOOK JACKET.

Book The Complete Easter Story and History

Download or read book The Complete Easter Story and History written by Cyprian Simon and published by Independently Published. This book was released on 2023-02-27 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: What is the first thing that comes to mind when you think about Easter? For a Christian, the cross or the empty tomb may come to mind first. A flood of media images and merchandise on store shelves increases the possibility that the Easter Bunny will come to mind for the general public. So, how did a rabbit distributing eggs become synonymous with Easter? For Christians, Easter is the most significant festival, season, or event. This is to recognize and celebrate the resurrection of Jesus Christ. Furthermore, if Christ had not risen from the dead, the Christian faith would not exist. All of our preaching and your faith, according to Paul's first epistle to the Corinthian Church, are meaningless until Christ has risen. And we would all be lying about God if we declared that God raised Christ from the grave. That, however, cannot be the case if there is no resurrection of the dead. If there is no resurrection of the dead, Christ has not been raised. Again, if Christ has not risen, your faith is ineffective, and you are still responsible for your crimes. In that case, everyone who has died and trusted in Christ is lost. Furthermore, if our faith in Christ is only for this life, we are more deserving of sympathy than anybody else in the world. 1 Cor. 15:14-19 The resurrection is at the heart of Christian belief, and it is commemorated on Easter. This is true since Christ resurrected from the dead in accordance with prophecy, confirming, certain, and safe our faith. When Christians celebrate Christ's birth at Christmas, we don't merely rejoice because He was born. We wouldn't be celebrating His birth if He was born, crucified, died, was buried, and then died again because He wouldn't be who He claimed to be. Jesus refused to provide the salvation and redemption that He claimed He was sent to provide. The Word was present from the start. Both the Word and God were identical. He had been with God since dusk. Nothing was formed apart from him; everything was made through him. The Word gave life to all that was made, and his life illuminated everything. The darkness cannot extinguish the light since it shines there. As a result, the Word took on human form and came to live among us.

Download or read book Resurrecting Easter written by John Dominic Crossan and published by HarperCollins. This book was released on 2018-02-13 with total page 423 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this four-color illustrated journey that is part travelogue and part theological investigation, bestselling author and acclaimed Bible scholar John Dominic Crossan and his wife Sarah painstakingly travel throughout the ancient Eastern church, documenting through text and image a completely different model for understanding Easter’s resurrection story, one that provides promise and hope for us today. Traveling the world, the Crossans noticed a surprising difference in how the Eastern Church considers Jesus’ resurrection—an event not described in the Bible. At Saint Barbara’s Church in Cairo, they found a painting in which the risen Jesus grasps the hands of other figures around him. Unlike the Western image of a solitary Jesus rising from an empty tomb that he viewed across Eastern Europe, Asia, and the Middle East, the Crossans saw images of the resurrection depicting a Jesus grasping the hands of figures around him, or lifting Adam and Eve to heaven from Hades or hell, or carrying the old and sick to the afterlife. They discovered that the standard image for the Resurrection in Eastern Christianity is communal and collective, something unique from the solitary depiction of the resurrection in Western Christianity. Fifteen years in the making, Resurrecting Easter reflects on this divide in how the Western and Eastern churches depict the resurrection and its implications. The Crossans argue that the West has gutted the heart of Christianity’s understanding of the resurrection by rejecting that once-common communal iconography in favor of an individualistic vision. As they examine the ubiquitous Eastern imagery of Jesus freeing Eve from Hades while ascending to heaven, the Crossans suggest that this iconography raises profound questions about Christian morality and forgiveness. A fundamentally different way of understand the story of Jesus’ rebirth illustrated with 130 images, Resurrecting Easter introduces an inclusive, traditional community-based ideal that offers renewed hope and possibilities for our fractured modern society.
