Its coastal resorts, including Brighton and Eastbourne, were ideally located for day visitors from London and easily accessible to tourists from further afield. Eastbourne was a small, inland village until the Duke of Devonshire developed it for 'those who can afford to take their pleasure in the best style, with all the latest improvements'. As a result, Eastbourne tended to attract more 'well-healed' visitors than its neighbours and the upper and aspiring middle classes flocked to its expensive hotels and refined amusements. Detailed guide books were available to help tourists make the most of their visit to Sussex, with chapters on history, geology, weather, where to stay and places of interest .... in fact, just about everything they could want or need to know. This 34 page booklet reproduces text from 'Black's Guide to Sussex', published in 1896, relating to Eastbourne and the surrounding area, including Beachy Head, Pevensey and many smaller villages. It is in two parts. The first is a history and general description of Sussex and the second, an exploration of Eastbourne and excursions to places of interest. The text is remarkably detailed and enables us to travel back in time to visit this historically important area of southern England.
