Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A comprehensive and beautifully illustrated overview to the birds of Maine The first comprehensive overview of Maine’s incredibly rich birdlife in more than seven decades, Birds of Maine is a detailed account of all 464 species recorded in the Pine Tree State. It is also a thoroughly researched, accessible portrait of a region undergoing rapid changes, with southern birds pushing north, northern birds expanding south, and once-absent natives like Atlantic Puffins brought back by innovative conservation techniques pioneered in Maine. Written by the late Peter Vickery in cooperation with a team of leading ornithologists, this guide offers a detailed look at the state’s dynamic avifauna—from the Wild Turkey to the Arctic Tern—with information on migration patterns and timing, current status and changes in bird abundance and distribution, and how Maine's geography and shifting climate mold its birdlife. It delves into the conservation status for Maine's birds, as well as the state's unusually textured ornithological history, involving such famous names as John James Audubon and Theodore Roosevelt, and home-grown experts like Cordelia Stanwood and Ralph Palmer. Sidebars explore diverse topics, including the Old Sow whirlpool that draws multitudes of seabirds and the famed Monhegan Island, a mecca for migrant birds. Gorgeously illustrated with watercolors by Lars Jonsson and scores of line drawings by Barry Van Dusen, Birds of Maine is a remarkable guide that birders will rely on for decades to come. Book The Machias Bay Region

    Book Details:
  • Author : Jim Harnedy
  • Publisher : Arcadia Publishing
  • Release : 2001
  • ISBN : 9780738505015
  • Pages : 132 pages

Download or read book The Machias Bay Region written by Jim Harnedy and published by Arcadia Publishing. This book was released on 2001 with total page 132 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Machias Bay Region has a rich multicultural heritage. For eons, Native Americans of various tribes journeyed to the shores of the Machias River each September for an annual gathering. The earliest European visitors to the region may have been Norsemen in the eleventh century. The French set up a trading post in 1605-1606 and the Pilgrims established an ill-fated trading post in 1733. Another early Machias settler was the infamous pirate Captain Samuel Bellamey. In 1763, Machias was successfully settled by a group of pioneers from Scarborough, who found in Machias an abundance of marsh hay, extensive forests, and a sheltered harbor. These brave pioneers later became American patriots when they fought and won the first naval engagement of the Revolutionary War on June 12, 1775. This wonderful photographic history captures how much, and yet how little has changed over the years. These photographs chronicle not only the rich historical traditions of the area but also the shared sense of life's unbroken continuity in the towns of the Machias Bay Region: Cutler, East Machias, Jonesboro, Machias, Machiasport, Marshfield, Whiting, and Whitneyville. The book features old vessels docking for shipments of lumber, fishermen plying the waters for a catch, lumberjacks running logs, horses hauling timber through the snow, the Cross Island lifesaving station, women doing their wash at Schooner Brook, cattle contributing to the workforce, and folks raking blueberries, and tipping balsam branches and making wreaths. The legacy of our churches, schools, general stores, and county buildings are featured, as well as school sports teams. Photographs of our communities and people at both work and play depict an artistry of another era and a glimpse into the way life was.

Book excerpt: In one of the most famous paranormal events from Early America, the Nelly Butler apparition appeared to more than one hundred individuals on the coast of Maine in 1799-1800. While this ghost is among the most convincing apparitions ever recorded, no other haunting created such a storm of controversy, sparking accusations of fraud, witchcraft, and demonism. For the ghost known as Nelly Butler orchestrated a wedding, a death, and a sensation unmatched to the present day. The hauntings remain one of the great mysteries of history.
