Book Blood Stain d Fields

Download or read book Blood Stain d Fields written by Arran Paul Johnston and published by . This book was released on 2013 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: East Lothian is the most accessible route from the south to the capital for any land invader of Scotland. Across the centuries armies fought their way over the county to the terrible detriment of the inhabitants. Roman, Northumbrian, English, Scots and even French armies fortified, fought and died here. The Act of Union in 1707 promised an end to war in East Lothian until Bonnie Prince Charlie and Johnnie Cope brought their armies to Prestonpans in 1745, and threats continued from overseas. Describing and analysing the military encounters that have taken place in East Lothian, Arran Johnston shows how the main strands of Scottish history came together in the nation's Battle County. From the saltire's first appearance (Athelstaneford 832), through bitter Anglo-Scottish conflicts (Dun bar 1296 & 1650, Pinkie 1547) and the trials of civil war (Carberry 1567, Prestonpans 1745), East Lothian's experience of battle reflects the story of the nation. Alongside the great battles for which the county is famous, Johnston also discusses less well-known episodes, including sieges and skirmishes, which complete the picture. Throughout he draws on contemporary accounts to convey the atmosphere of battle and the evolution of the weaponry, and reports on his visits to the sites of these conflicts today. Blood Stain'd Fields is timely into print as the Scottish nation gives increasing protection of its battlefields with a national inventory. Attention is also growing of the education and economic benefits of battlefields, not least at Prestonpans where the author is based and which is advancing its own campaign for the better interpretation of the Jacobite cause. Arran Paul Johnston is a historian who graduated from Edinburgh University and now plays a leading role with the Battle of Prestonpans Heritage Trust.

Book Participating in the Knowledge Society

Download or read book Participating in the Knowledge Society written by R. Finnegan and published by Springer. This book was released on 2005-09-27 with total page 299 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In current debates about the 'knowledge society' and the organization of 'research', the spotlight is most often on the universities. This interdisciplinary and transhistorical volume focuses on the less often-recognized work of independent researchers creating and participating in knowledge outside the academy, from seventeenth-century north-country astronomers to Victorian naturalists to today's think tanks, community historians and new forms of researching and publishing through the internet. These intriguing cases raise challenging issues about the location, definition, and validation of 'research', about active participation in knowledge-generation, and about the perhaps changing boundaries of university today.

Download or read book England and Scotland at War c 1296 c 1513 written by and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2012-06-22 with total page 415 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Anglo-Scottish wars of the late Middle Ages have long attracted scholarly attention, but studies focussing on the military aspects of the conflict over the longue durée and from both sides of the border have been lacking. In this collection of essays covering the years between the battles of Dunbar (1296) and Flodden (1513), Andy King and David Simpkin bring together leading historians in the field to consider afresh the armies and soldiers engaged in the wars, while also reflecting on the conflict's impact either side of the border. At a time when military history is undergoing a renaissance, the Anglo-Scottish wars offer a case-study not only of military institutions but also of the contributions made by individuals and communities. Contributors are Amanda Beam, Steve Boardman, Michael Brown, Sean Cunningham, Claire Etty, Jonathan Gledhill, David Grummitt, Andy King, Alastair Macdonald, Iain MacInnes, Gordon Pentland, David Simpkin, Andrew Spencer, Katie Stevenson and Thea Summerfield.

Book A Fighter Command Station at War

Download or read book A Fighter Command Station at War written by Mark Hillier and published by Frontline Books. This book was released on 2015-08-31 with total page 225 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Situated close to the South Coast, on flat land to the north of Chichester in West Sussex, lies Goodwood Aerodrome. This pleasant rural airfield was once home to squadrons of Hurricanes, Spitfires and later Typhoons. RAF Westhampnett was at the forefront of the Battle of Britain as a satellite to the Sector (or controlling) Station of RAF Tangmere, part of 11 Group, which bore the brunt of the struggle for Britain's survival in 1940. It became the base of Wing Commander Douglas Bader until he was shot down over France, as Fighter Command took the war to the enemy with operational sweeps over Occupied Europe. Those operations included the infamous Channel Dash which saw the escape of the German warships Scharnhorst and Gneisenau, and the Dieppe raid of 1942 which involved the largest aerial battle of the war up to that date. Westhampnett's squadrons also supported the D-Day landings and the subsequent Battle of Normandy. Packed with the largest collection of photographs of this airfield ever compiled, this illustrated publication provides a detailed history of the fighting as seen through the eyes of many of the pilots and ground crew. RAF Westhampnett brings to life those exciting but dangerous days of the Second World War through the words and photographs of those who were there.

Download or read book The Great War written by Dan Todman and published by A&C Black. This book was released on 2014-03-04 with total page 324 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The First World War, with its mud and the slaughter of the trenches, is often taken as the ultimate example of the futility of war. Generals, safe in their headquarters behind the lines, sent millions of men to their deaths to gain a few hundred yards of ground. Writers, notably Siegfried Sassoon and Wilfred Owen, provided unforgettable images of the idiocy and tragedy of the war. Yet this vision of the war is at best a partial one, the war only achieving its status as the worst of wars in the last thirty years. At the time, the war aroused emotions of pride and patriotism. Not everyone involved remembered the war only for its miseries. The generals were often highly professional and indeed won the war in 1918. In this original and challenging book, Dan Todman shows views of the war have changed over the last ninety years and how a distorted image of it emerged and became dominant.
