Book excerpt: A splendidly comprehensive account of the country houses in the western half of Dorset, which accompanies the author's previous acclaimed volume on the houses of the eastern part of the county. West Dorset presents a contrast with its intimate valleys and hidden houses. Major houses include Milton Abbey, built alongside a vast medieval monastic church and a rare example of Sir William Chambers' Gothick style. Its chief rival is the startlingly original Sherborne Castle, left incomplete by Sir Walter Raleigh at his execution. More than 40 further equally entrancing major houses are explained and more than 80 others follow in a comprehensive gazetteer. It is richly illustrated with both historic illustrations and sumptuous colour photographs taken especially for the book. This is for anyone who loves the beautiful county of Dorset or is entranced by English country houses. Michael Hill is a widely-recognised expert on country-house architecture and is the reviser of the Buildings of England volume for Dorset.

Book How the Country House Became English

Download or read book How the Country House Became English written by Stephanie Barczewski and published by Reaktion Books. This book was released on 2023-07-22 with total page 390 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The story of how the country house, historically a site of violent disruption, came to symbolize English stability during the eighteenth century. Country houses are quintessentially English, not only architecturally but also in that they embody national values of continuity and insularity. The English country house, however, has more often been the site of violent disruption than continuous peace. So how is it that the country how came to represent an uncomplicated, nostalgic vision of English history? This book explores the evolution of the country house, beginning with the Reformation and Civil War, and shows how the political events of the eighteenth century, which culminated in the reaction against the French Revolution, led to country houses being recast as symbols of England’s political stability.

Excerpt: St Giles House is located on the Shaftesbury Estate in Wimborne St Giles in East Dorset in England, just south of Cranborne Chase. This is the ancestral home and centre of business of the Ashley-Coopers, also known as the Earls of Shaftesbury, who are a conservative, aristocratic family that owns a large estate, including over 5,500 acres (22 km), along with property, land, and loughs, that establishes them as one of the wealthiest families in the United Kingdom. Built in 1651, the home rests in a vast park through which the River Allen flows, feeding a seven-acre lake as it winds its way towards the small parish village of Wimborne St Giles. The 16th century house is a low, quadrangular building on a large estate. Although the name of the architect is not known, the influence of Inigo Jones is obvious in the Renaissance north and east fronts with their Classical facades. The original plan of the house called for a square courtyard, to which was added two large ground floor rooms, with additional rooms on the second and third floors. The home was once crenellated along the edge of the parapet (or shorter walls) of the complete house, however these fortifications were removed in the 19th century. The east front, with its seven bays, remains much the same today. The large house and surrounding grounds include 400 acres, along with a leisurely estate lake, and a 1000-yard avenue of beech trees. The lake lies just 150...

Book excerpt: "Everybody tells you Dorset is a house or mansion county, not a church county...Yet when one sets down all one has seen of Dorset churches...one suddenly realises how much one has enjoyed", wrote Pevsner at the conclusion of his journey. The county provides many unexpected pleasures in ecclesiastical buildings, from the Norman arches of Wimborne Minster, the Early English solemnity of Milton Abbey, to the splendour of Sherborne and the monuments and furnishings of numerous smaller buildings. Of castles, mansions and houses, Dorset boasts the evocative ruins of Corfe; the splendid Kingston Lacy; mighty Milton Abbey House and a wealth of more modest homes. But the county also possesses fine towns and villages, from the Georgian elegance of Weymouth and Lyme Regis, to the model estate village of Milton Abbas.

Book The British Country House Revival

Download or read book The British Country House Revival written by Ben Cowell and published by Boydell & Brewer. This book was released on 2024-05-21 with total page 249 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Fifty years ago, the future for country houses in Britain looked bleak. The Victoria & Albert Museum's exhibition The Destruction of the Country House, which opened in October 1974, charted the loss of over a thousand country houses in the preceding century. The makers of the exhibition warned that history could be "about to repeat itself" because of the threats besetting mansion properties, principally from higher taxation. Houses faced the prospect of having to be stripped of their collections and sold for use as offices, hotels, or hospitals, with their parks and gardens turned into golf clubs. Government might afford to save just a handful of the most significant of these places, working in tandem with charities such as the National Trust. The rest would be consigned to history. This book traces the history of country houses in Britain, from the Destruction exhibition to the present day. The wave of country house losses anticipated in 1974 never actually happened. Instead, over the next five decades Britain's country houses experienced a renaissance. Fiscal rules changed in the mid-1970s to make it easier for owners to hold on to their assets. Economic improvements in the 1980s and 1990s allowed many houses and estates to develop profitable commercial businesses. All of this was achieved only after dedicated campaigning from heritage organisations in support of the country house cause. The book argues that a new accord is needed today, to recognise and value the ongoing, if increasingly contested, contribution of country houses to British life and culture in the twenty-first century.
