Download or read book Easily Distracted written by Steve Coogan and published by Random House. This book was released on 2015-10-08 with total page 370 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Steve Coogan was born and raised in Manchester in the 1960s, the fourth of six children. From an early age he entertained his family with impressions and was often told he should 'be on the telly'. Failing to get into any of the London-based drama schools, he accepted a place at Manchester Polytechnic School of Theatre and before graduating had been given his first break as a voice artist on the satirical puppet show Spitting Image. The late eighties and early nineties saw Coogan developing characters he could perform on the comedy circuit, from Ernest Moss to Paul Calf, and in 1992 he won a Perrier award with John Thomson. It was around the same time, while working with Armando Iannucci and Patrick Marber on On The Hour and The Day Today, that Alan Partridge emerged, almost fully formed. Coogan, once a tabloid fixture, is now a respected film actor, writer and producer. He runs his own production company, Baby Cow, has a raft of films to his name (from 24 Hour Party People to Alpha Papa, the critically-acclaimed Partridge film), six Baftas and seven Comedy Awards. He has found huge success in recent years with both The Trip and Philomena, the latter bringing him two Oscar nominations, for producing and co-writing. In Easily Distracted he lifts the lid on the real Steve Coogan, writing with distinctive humour and an unexpected candour about a noisy childhood surrounded by foster kids, his attention-seeking teenage years and his emergence as a household name with the birth of Alan Partridge.

Download or read book The Guitar written by Chris Gibson and published by University of Chicago Press. This book was released on 2021-05-05 with total page 291 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Guitars inspire cult-like devotion: an afficionado can tell you precisely when and where their favorite instruments were made. And she will likely also tell you about the wood they were made from and its unique effects on the instruments' sound. In Following Guitars, Chris Gibson and Andrew Warren trace guitars all the way back to the tree. It is a book about musical instrument making, the timbers and trees from which guitars are made. It chronicles the authors' journeys across the world, to guitar festivals, factories, remote sawmills, Indigenous lands, and distant rainforests, in search of the behind-the-scenes stories of how guitars are made, where the much-cherished guitar timbers ultimately come from, and the people and skills involved along the way. The authors are able to unlock insights on longer arcs of world history: on the human exploitation of nature, colonialism, industrial capitalism, and cultural change. They end on a parable of wider resonance: of the incredible but unappreciated skill and care that goes into growing and felling trees, milling timber, and making enchanted musical instruments; set against the human tendency to reform our use (and abuse) of natural resources only when it appears too late"--

Download or read book Inventing the American Guitar written by James Westbrook and published by Rowman & Littlefield. This book was released on 2013-10-01 with total page 311 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Inventing the American Guitar is the first book to describe the early history of American guitar design in detail. It tells the story of how a European instrument was transformed into one with all of the design and construction features that define the iconic American flat-top guitar. This transformation happened within a mere 20 years, a remarkably brief period. The person who dominates this history is C. F. Martin Sr., America's first major guitar maker and the founder of the Martin Guitar Company, which continues to produce outstanding flat-top guitars today. After emigrating from his native Saxony to New York in 1833, Martin quickly established a guitar making business, producing instruments modeled after those of his mentor, Johann Stauffer of Vienna. By the time he moved his family and business to rural Pennsylvania in 1839, Martin had absorbed and integrated the influence of Spanish guitars he had seen and heard in New York. In Pennsylvania, he evolved further, inventing a uniquely American guitar that was fully developed before the outbreak of the Civil War. Inventing the American Guitar traces Martin's evolution as a craftsman and entrepreneur and explores the influences and experiments that led to his creation of the American guitar that is recognized and played around the world today. To learn more about the history of the Martin guitar, click here to view the video and article from BBC, How Martin Guitars Became an 'American Stratavarius'.
Download or read book Four Tubas a Guitar and a Gallery of Cheerleaders written by Sederick C. Rice and published by AuthorHouse. This book was released on 2010-10-12 with total page 378 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Four Tubas, a Guitar, and a Gallery of Cheerleaders is about my growth, maturity, and life journeys that interconnected me with people who encouraged, motivated, and criticized my steps with love, compassion, and care. Readers will get a glimpse of my sojourn as a person and an inside look at the importance of good mentor relationships in the development of a young African-American (Black) man, with a desire to earn a Ph.D. My broader goal is to inspire others to look more closely at their own lives and take time to honor those, who have made a difference. This book is written as a way to say thanks and serves to connect my life through their impact. The backdrop of my journey will be lessons learned and how my successes were encouraged, while my limitations were addressed with constructive criticism, kindness, and unconditional love. I chose Four Tubas a Guitar and a Gallery of Cheerleaders, as part of the principal title, to signify my musical background and its impact on my life. One of the primary bonds for several of my mentors was that we all studied and played the same instrument, the tuba, which in my opinion is the greatest instrument in the world. The second part of the principal title, A Gallery of Cheerleaders, symbolizes the encouragement I received over the years from my biggest fans and support network. My cheerleaders consisted of people from all walks of life and experiences. The subtitle Transition in the Life of a Black Ph.D. is self-explanatory, as is my usual writing style, but describes my experiences as an African-American man in pursuit of higher education and my share of the American Dream.
Download or read book Ghetto Girls Rule in Marseille written by Toni B. Lane and published by FriesenPress. This book was released on 2018-05-09 with total page 218 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: “THE GHETTO GIRLS have somehow won a free trip to Marsay, France, to perform our play “Ghetto Girls Rule”. Rose couldn’t come because she is too little. So, it was me and my other sister Evelyn. Our mama said we could go if Robin Ann took responsibility for us. And since our mama hardly ever home, she wouldn’t miss us anyway. Robin Ann said it would be a good chance to get away from her brothers and house responsibilities and them girls up the way.” When a senseless shooting ends the life of a dear friend in front of their very eyes, the Ghetto Girls struggle to come to terms with the grief—and fear—that remains. They need to get away from it all (by any means necessary), so when the opportunity to go on an all expenses paid trip to Marseilles, France, comes about, the choice is simple for the twelve friends. And if the invitation wasn’t exactly intended for them, well, no one need be the wiser... None of them—not gum-poppin’, tough-talkin’ Beretta, not aspiring lawyer Deen, not even Leona with her fur coat and smattering of French—are prepared for what lies ahead. Will the young and hopeful Ghetto Girls return home triumphant, or will everything just continue to fall apart? By turns funny, tense, and deeply moving, this novel’s grounding in Black inner-city teen culture rings all the more true when the girls find themselves in the strange and picturesque French city, where they will have to depend on each other if they are to survive the adventure of a lifetime.
