Book Static and Dynamic Properties of Gravelly Soils

Download or read book Static and Dynamic Properties of Gravelly Soils written by Mark D. Evans and published by American Society of Civil Engineers. This book was released on 1995 with total page 176 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The behavior of gravelly soils has been the focus of much research in recent years. Large-scale penetration and triaxial tests, shear-wave velocity measurements, insitu freezing and sampling, shear modulus and damping ratio measurements, improved membrane compliance mitigation, and other innovations have helped improve our understanding of the behavior of gravelly soils. This proceedings, Static and Dynamic Properties of Gravelly Soils, contains papers presented at sessions held in conjunction with the ASCE Annual Convention held in San Diego, California, October 23-27, 1995. They deal with the behavior of gravelly soils. It is hoped that some of the work presented here will advance the state of knowledge in the area of gravelly soil behavior.

Book Soil Suction Applications in Geotechnical Engineering Practice

Download or read book Soil Suction Applications in Geotechnical Engineering Practice written by Warren K. Wray and published by American Society of Civil Engineers. This book was released on 1995 with total page 88 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Unsaturated soils have been traditionally thought of as moisturesensitive, "problem" soils. Yet, recent experiences with wettinginduced swell and collapse of compacted fills have prompted many engineers to adopt a broader view of unsaturated soils. From foundation design and performance to vadose-zone dominated geoenvironmental problems, the behavior of unsaturated soils is key to many geotechnical engineering concerns. This book demonstrates how soil suction can be used in geotechnical engineering practice involving unsaturated soils. Papers review the role of soil suction in volume change, shear strength, and flow characteristics of unsaturated soils."--BOOK JACKET.Title Summary field provided by Blackwell North America, Inc. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Loma Prieta earthquake struck the San Francisco area on October 17, 1989, causing 63 deaths and $10 billion worth of damage. This book reviews existing research on the Loma Prieta quake and draws from it practical lessons that could be applied to other earthquake-prone areas of the country. The volume contains seven keynote papers presented at a symposium on the earthquake and includes an overview written by the committee offering recommendations to improve seismic safety and earthquake awareness in parts of the country susceptible to earthquakes.

Book Decision Maker s Guide to Solid Waste Management

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This Guide has been developed particularly for solid waste management practitioners, such as local government officials, facility owners and operators, consultants, and regulatory agency specialists. Contains technical and economic information to help these practitioners meet the daily challenges of planning, managing, and operating municipal solid waste (MSW) programs and facilities. The Guide's primary goals are to encourage reduction of waste at the source and to foster implementation of integrated solid waste management systems that are cost-effective and protect human health and the environment. Illustrated.

Book Assessment of the Performance of Engineered Waste Containment Barriers

Download or read book Assessment of the Performance of Engineered Waste Containment Barriers written by National Research Council and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 2007-09-22 with total page 135 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: President Carter's 1980 declaration of a state of emergency at Love Canal, New York, recognized that residents' health had been affected by nearby chemical waste sites. The Resource Conservation and Recovery Act, enacted in 1976, ushered in a new era of waste management disposal designed to protect the public from harm. It required that modern waste containment systems use "engineered" barriers designed to isolate hazardous and toxic wastes and prevent them from seeping into the environment. These containment systems are now employed at thousands of waste sites around the United States, and their effectiveness must be continually monitored. Assessment of the Performance of Engineered Waste Containment Barriers assesses the performance of waste containment barriers to date. Existing data suggest that waste containment systems with liners and covers, when constructed and maintained in accordance with current regulations, are performing well thus far. However, they have not been in existence long enough to assess long-term (postclosure) performance, which may extend for hundreds of years. The book makes recommendations on how to improve future assessments and increase confidence in predictions of barrier system performance which will be of interest to policy makers, environmental interest groups, industrial waste producers, and industrial waste management industry.

Book National Earthquake Resilience

Download or read book National Earthquake Resilience written by National Research Council and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 2011-09-09 with total page 197 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The United States will certainly be subject to damaging earthquakes in the future. Some of these earthquakes will occur in highly populated and vulnerable areas. Coping with moderate earthquakes is not a reliable indicator of preparedness for a major earthquake in a populated area. The recent, disastrous, magnitude-9 earthquake that struck northern Japan demonstrates the threat that earthquakes pose. Moreover, the cascading nature of impacts-the earthquake causing a tsunami, cutting electrical power supplies, and stopping the pumps needed to cool nuclear reactors-demonstrates the potential complexity of an earthquake disaster. Such compound disasters can strike any earthquake-prone populated area. National Earthquake Resilience presents a roadmap for increasing our national resilience to earthquakes. The National Earthquake Hazards Reduction Program (NEHRP) is the multi-agency program mandated by Congress to undertake activities to reduce the effects of future earthquakes in the United States. The National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST)-the lead NEHRP agency-commissioned the National Research Council (NRC) to develop a roadmap for earthquake hazard and risk reduction in the United States that would be based on the goals and objectives for achieving national earthquake resilience described in the 2008 NEHRP Strategic Plan. National Earthquake Resilience does this by assessing the activities and costs that would be required for the nation to achieve earthquake resilience in 20 years. National Earthquake Resilience interprets resilience broadly to incorporate engineering/science (physical), social/economic (behavioral), and institutional (governing) dimensions. Resilience encompasses both pre-disaster preparedness activities and post-disaster response. In combination, these will enhance the robustness of communities in all earthquake-vulnerable regions of our nation so that they can function adequately following damaging earthquakes. While National Earthquake Resilience is written primarily for the NEHRP, it also speaks to a broader audience of policy makers, earth scientists, and emergency managers.
