Centered 70 miles northeast of Chile's second-largest city, Concepcion, at a depth of 22 miles, the earthquake was the second largest ever recorded in Chile and the fifth largest recorded worldwide since 1900. Over 100 aftershocks of magnitude 5.0 or greater were recorded following the initial earthquake. The earthquake and subsequent tsunami, which struck Chile's coast roughly 20 minutes after the earthquake and moved 2,000 feet onto shore in some places, devastated parts of the country. Although there are reports of varying casualty numbers, according to Chile's Ministry of the Interior, the official death toll is 507 (497 bodies have been identified; 10 remain unidentified). The numbers of missing persons are not yet known. Approximately 200,000 homes have been badly damaged or destroyed. Estimates suggest as many as 2 million people may have been affected by the earthquake, an unknown number of whom were injured or displaced.

Book excerpt: The mega-earthquake occurred on February 27 of March 2010, along the coast of the central Chile in South America, produced an early and shacked weak up to millions of people. The 8.8 Richter scale event hit the central zone at 03:34 A.M. while people were sleeping. Then, as if the damage weren't enough and still at dark, it was followed by a not only devastating but also lethal tsunami that was strong enough to travel across the Pacific Ocean, hitting Asia only fourteen hours after. This earthquake is the fifth more intense ever measured and it was so strong that Scientific American published in the March 4th newsletter the following article: "The magnitude 8.8 earthquake that jolted Chile on Saturday was felt as far away as São Paulo. But NASA scientists are proposing that its repercussions are truly global in a geophysical sense: it likely shifted Earth's axis by about eight centimeters." But unfortunately the tragedy didn't stop with the earthquake. It also originated a tsunami that hit the coast with 4 waves, the first arriving just a few minutes after the earthquake and the last, several hours after. This tsunami was so strong that it has been detected that at least one wave was 30 meters or 98 feet high. Before continuing I would like to prevent lecturers from falling into the temptation of thinking that this mega-nature-events, only happen in faraway lands affecting people quite different from us. The Indonesian Tsunami of December 2004 was very distant from Chile not only in miles but also in cultural terms. And now, it's clear that Indonesian experience helped to prevent more fatalities. That's why this book has been written to urge people living in the Pacific Rim, to take some time to analyze their situation, the one of each community and act in order to prevent or reduce potential damages and casualties.

The earthquake?the fifth largest recorded to date?was much stronger than the 2010 Haiti earthquake, yet the Chile earthquake and tsunami combined caused substantially less damage to infrastructure and less loss of life than the Haiti event. What can engineers and risk managers learn from the Chile earthquake? In April 2010, an ASCE-COPRI team of coastal, structural, and geotechnical engineers conducted a field investigation of 10 sites in Chile affected by the earthquake and tsunami, including the ports of San Vicente, Lirquen, Coronel, Valparaiso, and San Antonio; the San Vicente Gas Terminal; and Talcahuano, Dichato, Caleta Tumbes, and Santa Maria Island. They observed successes and failures of port/harbor pile-supported structures, breakwaters and sea walls, and coastal zones. This report presents the team?s findings on which types of infrastructure performed poorly and which types performed as intended. The team also compared the performance of older systems that were not designed using current mitigation methods with systems that were designed according to Chile?s modern codes. The report includes summaries of interviews by team members with engineers and government officials in Chile, as well as a summary of lessons learned and general recommendations. For coastal engineers, structural engineers, geotechnical engineers, and disaster risk managers, the observations and analyses in this report provide critical information for engineering infrastructure that withstands major earthquake and tsunami events.
