Book Imaging the Rupture Processes of Earthquakes Using the Relative Back Projection Method

Download or read book Imaging the Rupture Processes of Earthquakes Using the Relative Back Projection Method written by Hao Zhang and published by Springer. This book was released on 2017-12-27 with total page 127 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This thesis adopts the relative back-projection method to dramatically reduce “swimming” artifacts by identifying the rupture fronts in the time window of a reference station; this led to a faster and more accurate image of the rupture processes of earthquakes. Mitigating the damage caused by earthquakes is one of the primary goals of seismology, and includes saving more people’s lives by devising seismological approaches to rapidly analyze an earthquake’s rupture process. The back-projection method described in this thesis can make that a reality.

Book Theories and Applications of Enhanced Earthquake Back projection Imaging

Download or read book Theories and Applications of Enhanced Earthquake Back projection Imaging written by Ailin Zhang and published by . This book was released on 2019 with total page 174 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Earthquake source imaging is an efficient tool to reveal the kinematic rupture process of earthquakes. The accuracy and robustness of source imaging is of vital importance to con- strain source properties and help discriminate among potential physical mechanisms. In this work, I develop array-based approach: enhanced back-projection and coherence method to provide better constraints on kinematic source imaging. Slowness correction is proposed to improve the source imaging of complicated rupture in conjugate fault systems. The correction is capable of mitigating 3D structural effects that commonly exist for M8 earthquakes. For deep earthquakes, I introduce 3D back-projection which provides depth resolution of the rupture front. Resolving ruptures in 3D space helps us to understand the rupture process and physical mechanisms of deep earthquakes. Furthermore, coherence model is established to relate earthquake source size with inter-station cross-correlation. This method creates independent measures to validate and constrain the source sizes of deep earthquakes. Aforementioned array-based approaches have been successfully applied to recently oc- curred earthquakes, and I will take this chance to revisit the rupture mechanisms of the events revealed by enhanced source imaging

Book AutoBATS and 3D MUSIC New Approaches to Imaging Earthquake Rupture Behaviors

Download or read book AutoBATS and 3D MUSIC New Approaches to Imaging Earthquake Rupture Behaviors written by Pei-Ru Jian and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2021-09-27 with total page 110 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book presents the kinematic earthquake rupture studies from moment tenor to spatial-temporal rupture imaging. For real-time seismic hazard monitoring, the new stable automatic moment tensor (AutoBATS) algorithm is developed and implemented for the real-time MT reports by the Taiwan Earthquake Science Information System (TESIS). In order to understand the rupture behavior of the 2013 Mw 8.3 Okhotsk deep earthquake sequence, the 3D MUltiple SIgnal Classification Back Projection (MUSIC BP) with P and pP phases is applied. The combined P- and pP-wave BP imaging of the mainshock shows two stages of anti-parallel ruptures along two depths separating for about 10~15 km. Unusual super-shear ruptures are observed through the 3D BP images of two Mw 6.7 aftershocks. In last two chapters, the 3D BP imaging reveals similar rupture properties of two shallow catastrophic earthquakes (Mw=6.4) in southwestern Taiwan. Both the 2010 Jiashian and 2016 Meinong earthquakes ruptured westward with similar velocity of ~2.5 km/s along a NE-ward shallow dipping blind fault. The rupture similarities of the doublet suggest two parallel elongate asperities along the causative fault. After several decades of seismic quiescence, the 2010 Jiashian event initiated the rupture at the deeper asperity and triggered the shallower asperity which caused catastrophes six years later.

Download or read book Introduction to Seismology written by Peter M. Shearer and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2019-05-30 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This third edition provides a concise yet approachable introduction to seismic theory, designed as a first course for graduate students or advanced undergraduate students. It clearly explains the fundamental concepts, emphasizing intuitive understanding over lengthy derivations, and outlines the different types of seismic waves and how they can be used to resolve Earth structure and understand earthquakes. New material and updates have been added throughout, including ambient noise methods, shear-wave splitting, back-projection, migration and velocity analysis in reflection seismology, earthquake rupture directivity, and fault weakening mechanisms. A wealth of both reworked and new examples, review questions and computer-based exercises in MATLAB®/Python give students the opportunity to apply the techniques they have learned to compute results of interest and to illustrate Earth's seismic properties. More advanced sections, which are not needed to understand the other material, are flagged so that instructors or students pressed for time can skip them.

Book Earthquake Research and Analysis

Download or read book Earthquake Research and Analysis written by Sebastiano D'Amico and published by BoD – Books on Demand. This book was released on 2012-02-08 with total page 420 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is devoted to different aspects of earthquake research. Depending on their magnitude and the placement of the hypocenter, earthquakes have the potential to be very destructive. Given that they can cause significant losses and deaths, it is really important to understand the process and the physics of this phenomenon. This book does not focus on a unique problem in earthquake processes, but spans studies on historical earthquakes and seismology in different tectonic environments, to more applied studies on earthquake geology.

Book Through the Wall Radar Imaging

Download or read book Through the Wall Radar Imaging written by Moeness G. Amin and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 2017-12-19 with total page 647 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Through-the-wall radar imaging (TWRI) allows police, fire and rescue personnel, first responders, and defense forces to detect, identify, classify, and track the whereabouts of humans and moving objects. Electromagnetic waves are considered the most effective at achieving this objective, yet advances in this multi-faceted and multi-disciplinary technology require taking phenomenological issues into consideration and must be based on a solid understanding of the intricacies of EM wave interactions with interior and exterior objects and structures. Providing a broad overview of the myriad factors involved, namely size, weight, mobility, acquisition time, aperture distribution, power, bandwidth, standoff distance, and, most importantly, reliable performance and delivery of accurate information, Through-the-Wall Radar Imaging examines this technology from the algorithmic, modeling, experimentation, and system design perspectives. It begins with coverage of the electromagnetic properties of walls and building materials, and discusses techniques in the design of antenna elements and array configurations, beamforming concepts and issues, and the use of antenna array with collocated and distributed apertures. Detailed chapters discuss several suitable waveforms inverse scattering approaches and revolve around the relevance of physical-based model approaches in TWRI along with theoretical and experimental research in 3D building tomography using microwave remote sensing, high-frequency asymptotic modeling methods, synthetic aperture radar (SAR) techniques, impulse radars, airborne radar imaging of multi-floor buildings strategies for target detection, and detection of concealed targets. The book concludes with a discussion of how the Doppler principle can be used to measure motion at a very fine level of detail. The book provides a deep understanding of the challenges of TWRI, stressing its multidisciplinary and phenomenological nature. The breadth and depth of topics covered presents a highly detailed treatment of this potentially life-saving technology.
