Book Seismic Performance Analysis of Concrete Gravity Dams

Download or read book Seismic Performance Analysis of Concrete Gravity Dams written by Gaohui Wang and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2020-07-10 with total page 281 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book evaluates the seismic performance of concrete gravity dams, considering the effects of strong motion duration, mainshock-aftershock seismic sequence, and near-fault ground motion. It employs both the extended finite element method (XFEM) and concrete damaged plasticity (CDP) models to characterize the mechanical behavior of concrete gravity dams under strong ground motions, including the dam-reservoir-foundation interaction. In addition, it discusses the effects of the initial crack, earthquake direction, and cross-stream seismic excitation on the nonlinear dynamic response to strong ground motions, and on the damage-cracking risk of concrete gravity dams. This book provides a theoretical basis for the seismic performance evaluation of high dams, and can also be used as a reference resource for researchers and graduate students engaged in the seismic design of high dams.

Book Earthquake Engineering for Concrete Dams

Download or read book Earthquake Engineering for Concrete Dams written by National Research Council and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 1991-02-01 with total page 154 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The hazard posed by large dams has long been known. Although no concrete dam has failed as a result of earthquake activity, there have been instances of significant damage. Concerns about the seismic safety of concrete dams have been growing recently because the population at risk in locations downstream of major dams continues to expand and because the seismic design concepts in use at the time most existing dams were built were inadequate. In this book, the committee evaluates current knowledge about the earthquake performance of concrete dams, including procedures for investigating the seismic safety of such structures. Earthquake Engineering for Concrete Dams specifically informs researchers about state-of-the-art earthquake analysis of concrete dams and identifies subject areas where additional knowledge is needed.

Book Earthquake Response of Concrete Gravity Dams Including Hydrodynamic and Foundation Interaction Effects

Download or read book Earthquake Response of Concrete Gravity Dams Including Hydrodynamic and Foundation Interaction Effects written by Anil K. Chopra and published by . This book was released on 1980 with total page 216 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A general procedure for analysis of the response of concrete gravity dams, including the dynamic effects of impounded water and flexible foundation rock, to the transverse (horizontal) and vertical components of earthquake ground motion is presented. The problem is reduced to one in two dimensions, considering the transverse vibration of a monolith of the dam. The system is analyzed under the assumption of linear behavior for the concrete, foundation rock and water. The complete system is considered as composed of three substructures -- the dam, represented as a finite element system, the fluid domain, as a continuum of infinite length in the upstream direction, and the foundation rock region as a viscoelastic halfplane. The structural displacements of the dam are expressed as a linear combination of Ritz vectors, chosen as normal modes of an associated undamped dam-foundation system. The effectiveness of this analytical formulation lies in its being able to produce excellent results by considering only a few Ritz vectors. The modal displacements due to earthquake motion are computed by synthesizing their complex frequency responses using Fast Fourier Transform procedures. The stress responses are calculated from the modal displacements. An example analysis is presented to illustrate results obtained from this analytical procedure. Computation times for several analyses are presented to illustrate effectiveness of the procedure.

Book A Computer Program for Earthquake Analysis of Gravity Dams Including Hydrodynamic Interaction

Download or read book A Computer Program for Earthquake Analysis of Gravity Dams Including Hydrodynamic Interaction written by P. Chakrabarti and published by . This book was released on 1973 with total page 126 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A computer program for earthquake analysis of gravity dams including effects of hydrodynamic interaction is presented. The dam-water system is idealized as two-dimensional in geometry, the material behavior is assumed to be linearly elastic, and the transverse horizontal as well as the vertical component of ground motion are considered. The dam is represented as a finite element system, whereas water in the reservoir is treated as a continum of infinite length in the upstream direction governed by the wave equation. Compressibility of water is considered resulting in governing equations for the dam depending on the excitation frequency. The analysis is performed in the frequency domain, first obtaining the frequency responses and then Fourier Synthesizing them by Fast Fourier Transform procedures to obtain responses to arbitrary ground motion. A listing of the computer program is included and the usage and capabilities are illustrated by examples. (Author).

Book Nonlinear Earthquake Response of Concrete Gravity Dams

Download or read book Nonlinear Earthquake Response of Concrete Gravity Dams written by N. Pal and published by . This book was released on 1974 with total page 112 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A mathematical model is proposed for the mechanical properties -- constitutive relation and strength -- of concrete subject to dynamic cyclic reversible stresses and strains that may occur in gravity dams subjected to earthquake ground motion. The model describes properties of concrete under a two-dimensional state of stress. The effects of strain rate -- the time rate of change of strain -- on the mechanical properties are incorporated in the model. Experimental results available in the literature form the basis for the proposed model. A method is developed for nonlinear analysis of response of concrete gravity dams to earthquake ground motion wherein mechanical properties of concrete are defined by the mathematical model mentioned above. Earthquake analyses reveal that cracking of concrete is confined to areas near the upstream and downstream faces of dams -- especially in the upper parts and in some cases also near the heel. The estimated cracking is very sensitive to the assumed tensile strength.
