Book excerpt: "This catalogue to accompany the museum exhibition traces the emergence of the artistic impulses to use the earth as material, land as medium, and to locate works in remote sites, beyond familiar art contexts. Significantly, "Ends of the Earth" challenges many myths about Land art--that it was primarily a North American phenomenon, that it was foremost a sculptural practice, and that it exceeds the confines of the art system. Featuring over 100 artists hailing from countries including Great Britain, Germany, Iceland, Israel, Japan, the Netherlands, and the United States, the exhibition constitutes the most comprehensive survey of Land art to date"--Provided by publisher.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: My photographs are made with the same sunlight that powers all the earth's living systems. --Martin Hill * Reminiscent of the internationally best-selling Earth from Above, Martin Hill's Earth to Earth transforms the beauty of everyday items found in nature and elevates them to ecological art. Ecology is a science that is entering its renaissance as issues of global warming, greenhouse emissions, and ozone depletion make their way from scientific debates and newspaper headlines to family breakfast tables. Environmental photographer Martin Hill and project collaborator Philippa Jones visit remote locations around the globe to create a stunning array of evocative photographs that represent a visual circle of life promoting ecological sustainability and responsibility. In addition to an eloquent introduction by Sir Edmund Hillary, ecologically minded quotes and facts appear throughout the collection: * Each day more solar energy falls to the earth than the total amount of energy the planet's six billion inhabitants would consume in 25 years. * What use is a house if you haven't got a tolerable planet to put it on? In Earth to Earth Hill presents more than 70 transcendent four-color photographs that capture images of natural items found in nature, which he then transforms into exquisitely intricate sculptural masterpieces. Prior to leaving each location--whether at the top of a snow-covered mountain or on the sand-blown shores of a windy beach--Hill ensures that each site is left exactly as it was found.

Book The Painting Factory

    Book Details:
  • Author : Jeffrey Deitch

Download or read book The Painting Factory written by Jeffrey Deitch and published by Skira. This book was released on 2012 with total page 242 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The first large-scale exhibition exploring contemporary abstract painting. In a major exhibition at the Museum of Contemporary Art, Los Angeles, director Jeffrey Deitch considers the reemergence of abstract painting among a broad range of artists whose work is as diverse conceptually as it is aesthetically. Looking back to Andy Warhol’s seminal Shadow, Oxidation, and Rorschach paintings as among the many touchstones that underwrite the contemporary impulse to abstraction, the show features artists such as Julie Mehretu, whose large-scale works densely layer maplike markings; Josh Smith, whose lush canvases often explore a single theme repeatedly, such as his signature; and Tauba Auerbach, whose highly formal explorations of materials challenge conventional modes of perception. Additional artists include Rudolf Stingel, Christopher Wool, Glenn Ligon, Urs Fischer, Mark Bradford, Wade Guyton, Kelley Walker, Seth Price, Kerstin Brätsch and Adele Röder, and Sterling Ruby. The exhibition catalogue features a roundtable discussion between Jeffrey Deitch, art historian Johanna Burton, and curators James Meyer and Scott Rothkopf.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Contemporary artists probe the impact of human intervention on the environment Just as artists of the 19th and 20th centuries participated in forging an American natural history as explorers, cataloguers, collectors, and early environmentalists, contemporary artists continue to incorporate and comment on the natural world in their art. Motivated by the inexorable rise of urban-industrial development and the subsequent deterioration of our planet, artists confront the vulnerability of our environment and the effects of global climate change to illustrate the continued relevance of ecology and nature conservation to contemporary artistic practice. In Fragile Earth: The Naturalist Impulse in Contemporary Art, leading artists Jennifer Angus, Mark Dion, Courtney Mattison, and James Prosek make natural elements their medium conceptually and literally, from prints created with eel bodies, to ceramic sculpture mimicking coral bleaching, cabinets filled with colorful plastic collected from oceans and rivers, and walls covered with shockingly beautiful, preserved insects. Bringing an artistic perspective to natural science, these essays and written conversations showcase the persuasive role artists can play in advocating for the preservation of our earth.

Book Speed of the Earth

    Book Details:
  • Author : Mitchell Benoff
  • Publisher :
  • Release : 1993
  • ISBN :
  • Pages : 140 pages

Download or read book Speed of the Earth written by Mitchell Benoff and published by . This book was released on 1993 with total page 140 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Speed of the Earth is a proposed sculpture dealing with light as pure experience within the context of short-lived rapid movement and large scale horizontal orientation within the environment. This will be accomplished through the use of rapidly sequenced strobe lights sited in a straight east/west axis line, which create a momentary event of pure light that is both corporeal and illusive. The proposed sculpture will also addresses the concept of relative perception, the light event itself creating a tangible depiction/illustration of the speed of the Earth's rotation on its axis and representing a fixed point in space that reverses the standard point of reference for the viewer's basis of location. This thesis explores the use of linear and temporal scale in environmental art, concentrating on specific works that have direct association to aspects of the proposed thesis sculpture. The strobe light is briefly discussed. The artist's personal background and perspective are described within the context of the evolution of the thesis sculpture. The proposed thesis sculpture and its planned implementation and application is described and documented.

The island-uninhabited since the days of the old hermit for whom it was named-beckons outcast Jesuit scholar and ornithologist Alfredo Manzi to its dark forest. He meets Charlie, a blue-eyed crow who seems to be expecting him. The crow tells Manzi he is one of the last of the Patua', a Homo sapien subspecies with a strange ability to verbally communicate with the corvids, a group of highly intelligent birds that includes ravens and crows. Manzi learns to his growing amazement that he is not the first of his kind to visit Wilder Island, and that it holds many secrets of his ancient, vanishing race. The corvids put all hope upon him to bring the Patua' back from the edge of oblivion and save the Earth from the ravages of human technology. But the island itself is in grave danger of a takeover from a land developer whose plans will most certainly destroy the unique corvid population forever, as well the legacy of the Patua'. Manzi begins fulfilling his mission to save the enchanted wilderness, enlisting help from the corvids, another Patua', and a colleague and his wife, who is about to uncover her own secrets. In this fantasy tale, corvids and humans must band together to save their beloved island from destruction-before it is too late.

Book excerpt: Selected by Nobel Laureate Louise Glück as Winner of the inaugural Bergman Prize, Rachel Mannheimer's debut, Earth Room, is a dazzling book-length narrative poem that explores with tenderness how art and love intersect to make one's life. Transporting the reader across decades and from the Moon to Mars by way of Alaska, Berlin, and the Hudson Valley, Earth Room considers a lineage of sculpture, performance, and land art--from Robert Smithson to Pina Bausch--with observations shaped by gender and environment, history and portents of apocalypse. With an urgent, direct, and unmistakably powerful voice, Mannheimer tests the line between nature and culture, ordinary life and performance. A work of sly wit and bracing sincerity, Earth Room is an original, unsparing book that Louise Glück calls "a lesson in how to make something of where we find ourselves."

Book excerpt: Architectural paintings in watercolour from the Himalayan kingdom of Mustang in northern Nepal - the subject of a major travelling exhibition - are presented here in all their beauty and originality. The artist's work on Mustang began in 1992 and continuted over six years. This close association has allowed him to present the essence and heart of Mustang's architecture and man-made structures. Within this forbidding country, dry, dramatic and overwhelming in scale, humans have been able to create islands of habitation through the careful control of water. The structures built to maintain these islands, and to thrive, are the subjects of the paintings. Virtually every built object in Mustang bears the signs of ritual activity: from pre-historic hand-dug cave systems to ruined hilltop castles, from densely clustered villages to isolated temples, from propitiatory stacks of yak horns to the sophisticated cosmology of the chortens. This book presents in colour 43 paintings by Robert Powell.

Book excerpt: How do we make sense of the Earth at a moment in which it is presented in crisis? To live in an epoch that is shaped by extensive environmental transformations is to be confronted with risks and uncertainties at scales larger than that of the planet. Paradoxically, while we worry that the sky may be falling on our heads, we remain so immobilized in part maybe because of our failures to comprehend the scales of a story that is difficult both to tell and to hear. Two Cosmograms mediates the dissonance between the environmental question at stake and the narrow repertoire of emotions and imaginations with which we try to understand these issues by exploring speculative fiction as the political art that integrates the story of the cosmos into our own life stories. In response to the expansion of infrastructural systems and resource exploitation beyond the Earth, the two projects -Neck of the Moon and Love your Monsters- engage the architectural imaginations of the Cosmos. The speculative fictions probe the politics and aesthetics of technological systems, both in the extra-planetary environment as well as here on Earth.
