Book excerpt: The Fourteenth Rare Earth Research Conference was held June 25- 28, 1979, at North Dakota State University in Fargo. The meeting was hosted by the College of Science and Mathematics and the Depart ment of Physics. Since the first conference was held in 1960, sub sequent meetings have grown in size and prestige to become one of the leading international forums devoted to disseminating new infor mation relative to rare earth science and technology. The meeting in Fargo was one of the largest yet held. The Program Committee scheduled over 160 papers repres~nting colleagues from 18 countries in both oral and poster sessions that - cluded Spectroscopy (Luminescence, Fluorescence, Laser, Mossbauer, ESR); Metallurgy and Materials Preparation; Solution, Solvation and Analytical Chemistry; X-ray and Neutron Diffraction; Transport and Thermal Properties; Hydrides; Magnetism; and Rare Earth Technology. A first and special event which the organizers hope to perpet uate at future meetings was to announce the recipient of the rare earth prize, hereafter called the Frank H. Spedding Award. Governor Arthur A. Link, State of North Dakota, on behalf of the Selection Committee, presented Professor Frank H. Spedding with a special citation. Professor Spedding spoke briefly and introduced the first recipient, Professor W. Edward Wallace from the University of Pitts burgh.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book endeavours to show in a clear and simple manner the useful and practical truth that underlies the so-called occult study of reading character and disposition by the “period of birth”, and the meaning of the number of each day and the influence of such things on human life. It will, I hope, be seen in reading these pages how perfect is the mechanism of the Universe, by which certain characteristics, and even details as to health, may be traced by a study of such things. In the present book I have drawn largely from my own experiences in this study of character, and I may safely state that there is not a rule I have given concerning character tendencies or health, which has not been thoroughly verified by me in my own work, which has extended in a professional way over a period of more than forty years.

Book How Do We Know Earth Is Round

Download or read book How Do We Know Earth Is Round written by Alix Wood and published by The Rosen Publishing Group, Inc. This book was released on 2015-07-15 with total page 34 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: People used to think that Earth was flat, but now we know it isn’t. How did we find out Earth is actually a sphere? How did science help us understand the shape of our planet? Readers will delight in exploring the history and science behind Earth’s spherical shape. They’ll learn how satellite images and modern technology give us an image of the Earth. Readers will also learn all about early scientists and how they gradually came to enlighten others that the Earth wasn’t flat. Clear diagrams and fascinating sidebars help explain this important science topic, as supplemental science experiments give readers the hands-on experience they need to grasp the topic.

Download or read book Geometry Plane and Fancy written by David A. Singer and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 171 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A fascinating tour through parts of geometry students are unlikely to see in the rest of their studies while, at the same time, anchoring their excursions to the well known parallel postulate of Euclid. The author shows how alternatives to Euclids fifth postulate lead to interesting and different patterns and symmetries, and, in the process of examining geometric objects, the author incorporates the algebra of complex and hypercomplex numbers, some graph theory, and some topology. Interesting problems are scattered throughout the text. Nevertheless, the book merely assumes a course in Euclidean geometry at high school level. While many concepts introduced are advanced, the mathematical techniques are not. Singers lively exposition and off-beat approach will greatly appeal both to students and mathematicians, and the contents of the book can be covered in a one-semester course, perhaps as a sequel to a Euclidean geometry course.

Aristotle (384—322 B.C.) was a Greek philosopher and scientist. His writings cover many subjects—including physics, biology, zoology, metaphysics, logic, ethics, aesthetics, poetry, theater, music, rhetoric, linguistics, politics and government—and constitute the first comprehensive system of Western philosophy. According to the Encyclopædia Britannica, “Aristotle was the first genuine scientist in history . . . [and] every scientist is in his debt.” Plato (428/427 or 424/423–348/347 B.C.E.) was a philosopher, as well as mathematician, in Classical Greece. He is considered an essential figure in the development of philosophy, especially the Western tradition, and he founded the Academy in Athens, the first institution of higher learning in the Western world. Along with his teacher Socrates and his most famous student, Aristotle, Plato laid the foundations of Western philosophy and science. Alfred North Whitehead once noted: “the safest general characterization of the European philosophical tradition is that it consists of a series of footnotes to Plato.” ——BOOKS BY ARISTOTLE—— —LOGIC— INSTRUMENT, TOOL, ORGAN | ORGANON [*] CATEGORIES ON INTERPRETATION PRIOR ANALYTICS POSTERIOR ANALYTICS TOPICS SOPHISTICAL REFUTATIONS —PHYSICS— PHYSICS ON THE HEAVENS ON GENERATION AND CORRUPTION METEOROLOGY ON THE UNIVERSE ON THE SOUL LITTLE PHYSICAL TREATISES | PARVA NATURALIA [*] SENSE AND SENSIBILIA ON MEMORY ON SLEEP ON DREAMS ON DIVINATION IN SLEEP ON LENGTH AND SHORTNESS OF LIFE ON YOUTH, OLD AGE, LIFE AND DEATH, AND RESPIRATION ON BREATH HISTORY OF ANIMALS PARTS OF ANIMALS MOVEMENT OF ANIMALS PROGRESSION OF ANIMALS GENERATION OF ANIMALS ON COLORS ON THINGS HEARD PHYSIOGNOMONICS ON PLANTS ON MARVELLOUS THINGS HEARD MECHANICS ON INDIVISIBLE LINES THE SITUATIONS AND NAMES OF WINDS ON MELISSUS, XENOPHANES, AND GORGIAS PROBLEMS —METAPHYSICS— METAPHYSICS —ETHICS AND POLITICS— NICOMACHEAN ETHICS GREAT ETHICS EUDEMIAN ETHICS ON VIRTUES AND VICES POLITICS ECONOMICS CONSTITUTION OF THE ATHENIANS —RHETORIC AND POETICS— RHETORIC RHETORIC TO ALEXANDER POETICS SELECT FRAGMENTS ——BOOKS ABOUT ARISTOTLE—— ARISTOTLE ARISTOTLE AND ANCIENT EDUCATIONAL IDEALS ARTICLES ON ARISTOTLE ——BOOKS BY PLATO—— CHARMIDES LYSIS LACHES PROTAGORAS EUTHYDEMUS CRATYLUS PHAEDRUS ION SYMPOSIUM MENO EUTHYPHRO APOLOGY CRITO PHAEDO GORGIAS LESSER HIPPIAS ALCIBIADES I MENEXENUS ALCIBIADES II ERYXIAS THE REPUBLIC TIMAEUS CRITIAS PARMENIDES THEAETETUS SOPHIST STATESMAN PHILEBUS LAWS —SPURIOUS TEXTS— HIPPARCHUS THE RIVAL LOVERS THEAGES MINOS EPINOMIS SISYPHUS AXIOCHUS DEMODOCUS HALCYON ON JUSTICE ON VIRTUE DEFINITIONS EPIGRAMS THE EPISTLES ——BOOKS ABOUT PLATO—— INTRODUCTION TO THE PHILOSOPHY AND WRITINGS OF PLATO PLATO AND PLATONISM THE INFLUENCE OF PLATO ON SAINT BASIL ARTICLES ON PLATO CATHOLIC WAY PUBLISHING
