Download or read book written by Aristotle and published by Liverpool University Press. This book was released on 1995 with total page 283 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The first two books of Aristotle's On the Heavens (De Caelo) offer perspectives on the cosmology of a thinker whose ideas in this area were considered authoritative by many until the seventeenth century. This new translation and commentary provide the modern reader with the opportunity to appraise Aristotle's ideas in relation to the cosmologies of his predecessors. While tied to the thinking of the day, Aristotle nevertheless succeeded in placing cosmology on a new footing; indeed, as the commentary in this volume shows, his use of mathematics-style demonstration, along with his appeal to observation, in avoiding more standard forms of argument, resulted in a methodology that often shares common ground with today's cosmologies. Greek text, with facing-page English translation, introduction, notes and commentary.

Book excerpt: An NYRB Classics Original Basti is a beautifully written reckoning with the tragic history of Pakistan. Basti means settlement, a common place, and Intizar Husain’s extraordinary novel begins with a mythic, even mystic, vision of harmony between old and young, man and woman, Muslim and Hindu. Then Zakir, the hero, wakes to the modern world. Crowds gather. Slogans echo. Cities burn. Whether hunkered down with family or furtively meeting to exchange news with friends in cafés, Zakir is alone in a country lost to the politics of loneliness.

Download or read book Make Believing the World s written by Mark S. McLeod-Harrison and published by McGill-Queen's Press - MQUP. This book was released on 2009 with total page 400 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: While it is often thought that a serious theism is largely incompatible with a radical ontological pluralism, Mark McLeod-Harrison defends the claim that ontological relativism not only requires theism but is consistent with traditional Christianity. Building primarily on the work of Nelson Goodman and Michael Lynch, McLeod-Harrison spells out what is right and what is missing from contemporary pluralism. Proposing a new defence, he explains the need for God and shows how and why radical relativistic pluralism is consistent with traditional Christianity. He also explores how pluralism can be defended against the notorious "consistency challenge" and analyses the relationships among noetic irrealism, pluralism, necessity, God's nature, theories of truth, and idealism. Philosophers working in the field of realistic/antirealistic metaphysics, theologians struggling with how to put traditional Christian claims together with our postmodern situation, and those interested in a new framework For The integration of faith and theorizing will findMake/Believing the World(s)of great interest.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The only information we have on Atlantis is from a very ancient Egyptian account that describes it as bigger than all their neighbours combined. Why is this fact ignored by most of the fanciful theories? From Atlantis to our current scientific predictions, the truth about so many things becomes clear and obvious only if all the facts are collected and examined, yet many people just select those that agree with their thinking. The resulting conflict between experience and belief, truth and distortion or good and bad, is only resolved when science, philosophy and theology are harmonized and examined as aspects of one universal truth.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Geology and Landscape Evolution: General Principles Applied to the United States, Third Edition is an accessible text that balances interdisciplinary theory and applications within the physical geography, geology, geomorphology and climatology of the United States. The vast diversity of terrain and landscape across the United States makes this an ideal tool for geoscientists worldwide who research the country's geological and landscape evolution. The book provides an explanation of how landscape forms and how it evolves. This edition is fully updated with 3 additional sections: Geologic and Tectonic Processes and Provinces; Surface Processes and Provinces; and Compressional Mountain Systems. Rather than limiting the coverage specifically to tectonics or to the origin and evolution of rocks with little regard for the actual landscape beyond general desert, river, and glacial features, this book concentrates specifically on the origin of the landscape itself, with specific and exhaustive references and examples from across the United States. The book goes on to apply those concepts to specific examples throughout the United States, making it a valuable resource for understanding theoretical geological concepts through a practical lens. - Presents the complexities of physical geography, geology, geomorphology and climatology of the United States through an interdisciplinary, highly accessible approach - Offers hundreds of figures, maps and photographs that capture the systematic interaction of land, rock, rivers, glaciers, global wind patterns and climate, including Google Earth images - Provides a thorough assessment of the logic, rationale, and tools required to understand how to interpret landscape and the geological history of the Earth - Features exercises that conclude each chapter, aiding in the retention of key concepts - Includes 3 new sections and 8 additional chapters, as well as major updates to chapters throughout

This book was released on 1999 with total page 404 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 1996, the National Assessment of Educational Progress (NAEP) assessed the knowledge and skills of students in the areas of earth science, life science, and physical science. It also collected information related to the background of students (grades 4, 8, and 12), their teachers (grades 4 and 8), and the schools they attended (grades 4, 8, and 12). This report is intended primarily for science teachers; hence, the results presented relate directly to student performance, classroom practices, and school climate. This report also discusses students' attitudes and beliefs about science. The report is divided into four parts. In the first part (chapter 1), an overview of the assessment is provided. This includes information about the framework used in the development of the assessment, a description of how the assessmet was administered to students, and an explanation of how to interpret NAEP results. In the second part (chapters 2, 3, and 4), examples of questions and student responses are presented. These chapters are divided by grade. The third part (chapters 5 and 6) contains information collected from students, teachers, and school administrators about classroom practices, student motivation, and parental involvement in learning. Finally, the fourth part contains appendices offering a fuller description of the procedures used for the NAEP 1996 science assessment (appendix A), scoring guides for questions discussed in chapters 2, 3, and 4 (appendix B), and standard errors for the statistics presented in the report (appendix C).
