Kids around the world use electric energy to do all kinds of things--adults do, too! From cleaning the clothes we play in, to lighting up our dinner tables, to keeping us warm and toasty when the weather is cold, electricity is a huge part of our lives. Unfortunately, it can also have a big impact on our planet. Earth Hour--a worldwide movement in support of energy conservation and sustainability--takes place each March and is sponsored by the World Wildlife Fund for Nature (WWF). During Earth Hour, individuals, communities, and businesses in more than 7,000 cities turn off nonessential electric lights for one hour. Across each continent--from the Eiffel Tower to the Great Wall of China to the Statue of Liberty--one small act reminds all of us of our enormous impact on planet Earth.

Download or read book Our Final Hour written by Martin Rees and published by Basic Books. This book was released on 2009-03-17 with total page 240 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A scientist known for unraveling the complexities of the universe over millions of years, Sir Martin Rees now warns that humankind is potentially the maker of its own demise -- and that of the cosmos. Though the twenty-first century could be the critical era in which life on Earth spreads beyond our solar system, it is just as likely that we have endangered the future of the entire universe. With clarity and precision, Rees maps out the ways technology could destroy our species and thereby foreclose the potential of a living universe whose evolution has just begun. Rees boldly forecasts the startling risks that stem from our accelerating rate of technological advances. We could be wiped out by lethal "engineered" airborne viruses, or by rogue nano-machines that replicate catastrophically. Experiments that crash together atomic nuclei could start a chain reaction that erodes all atoms of Earth, or could even tear the fabric of space itself. Through malign intent or by mistake, a single event could trigger global disaster. Though we can never completely safeguard our future, increased regulation and inspection can help us to prevent catastrophe. Rees's vision of the infinite future that we have put at risk -- a cosmos more vast and diverse than any of us has ever imagined -- is both a work of stunning scientific originality and a humanistic clarion call on behalf of the future of life.

Book excerpt: One of The New York Times 10 Best Books of the Year National Book Award Finalist Finalist for the National Book Critics Circle John Leonard Prize Finalist for the Center for Fiction First Novel Prize Finalist for the New York Public Library's Young Lions Fiction Award National Best Seller "Splendidly imagined . . . Thrilling" --Simon Winchester "A genuine masterpiece" --Gary Shteyngart Spellbinding, moving--evoking a fascinating region on the other side of the world--this suspenseful and haunting story announces the debut of a profoundly gifted writer. One August afternoon, on the shoreline of the Kamchatka peninsula at the northeastern edge of Russia, two girls--sisters, eight and eleven--go missing. In the ensuing weeks, then months, the police investigation turns up nothing. Echoes of the disappearance reverberate across a tightly woven community, with the fear and loss felt most deeply among its women. Taking us through a year in Kamchatka, Disappearing Earth enters with astonishing emotional acuity the worlds of a cast of richly drawn characters, all connected by the crime: a witness, a neighbor, a detective, a mother. We are transported to vistas of rugged beauty--densely wooded forests, open expanses of tundra, soaring volcanoes, and the glassy seas that border Japan and Alaska--and into a region as complex as it is alluring, where social and ethnic tensions have long simmered, and where outsiders are often the first to be accused. In a story as propulsive as it is emotionally engaging, and through a young writer's virtuosic feat of empathy and imagination, this powerful novel brings us to a new understanding of the intricate bonds of family and community, in a Russia unlike any we have seen before.

Book Economic Growth Climate Crisis and Natural Disasters

Download or read book Economic Growth Climate Crisis and Natural Disasters written by Gurinder Kaur and published by IMPRI Impact and Policy Research Institute. This book was released on 2022-04-13 with total page 190 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Today, almost all countries of the world are facing the scourge of natural disasters caused by global warming. Rising temperature is increasing the frequency and intensity of natural disasters and the severity of their effects. The increase in the average global temperature has not happened all of a sudden, the real reason for this increase is the pro-capitalist/corporate world economic development model adopted by the governments of different countries. Most of the countries around the world, especially developed countries, have indiscriminately squandered natural resources in a blind race of economic growth. The research articles in this book are an attempt to analyze the global climate crisis, natural disasters, and economic growth. They trace the extent to which human beings have destroyed natural resources such as forests, water, land, and air in the name of economic development. The average temperature of the earth began to rise after the Pre-Industrial Revolution Period. Rapid global warming has caused the world's oldest and most developed countries to be affected by floods, heatwaves, droughts, and wildfires. Every day, one or another region of India is suffering from natural calamities, with the state of Uttarakhand and six states in the Western Ghats being on the brink of ruin. They also explain which countries around the world are now planning to overcome the climate crisis caused by global warming. The time to look at the facts and act on Climate Change is now, if every country takes bold steps for the pressing issues at hand, we can still change the trajectory of where humanity is headed. Everyday small acts by vigilant citizens can look like drops of water, but we should remember many tiny drops can make an ocean, these many small acts can surmount to something bigger. We must put in the time, though, and effort quickly and boldly. Here's to leaving our planet better than how we found it for the future generations to come.

Book excerpt: Environment days are occassions to educate the public on the issues of concern, to mobilize political will and resources to adress global problems and to celebrate and rein force achievements of humanity. The existence of environmental days pre dates the establishment of the United Nations but the UN has embrassed them as a powerful advocacy tool. Water and air , the two essentials on which all life depends , have become global garbage cans now. The real cure for our environment problems is to understand that our job is to salvage Mother nature. we are facing a formidable enemy in this field it is the hunters - and to convince them to leave their guns on the wall is going to be very difficult hence I strongly believe the information on every day of environmental importance will serve as a wake up call to aware the public on a wider scale . I hope the contents of this book will serve the purpose to some extent.

Book Multimodal Pragmatics and Translation

Download or read book Multimodal Pragmatics and Translation written by Sara Dicerto and published by Springer. This book was released on 2017-11-28 with total page 181 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book proposes a new model for the translation-oriented analysis of multimodal source texts. The author guides the reader through semiotics, multimodality, pragmatics and translation studies on a quest for the meaning-making mechanics of texts that combine images and words. She openly challenges the traditional view that sees translators focusing their attention mostly on the linguistic aspect of source material in their work. The central theoretical pivot around which the analytical model revolves is that multimodal texts communicate through individual images and linguistic units, as well as through the interaction among textual resources and the text's interaction with its context of reference. This three-dimensional view offers a holistic understanding of multimodal texts and their potential translation issues to help translators improve the way they communicate multimodally across languages and cultures. This book will appeal to researchers in the fields of translation studies, multimodality and pragmatics.
