Book Evacuation

  • Author : Peter Adey
  • Publisher : Duke University Press
  • Release : 2024-08-16
  • ISBN : 1478059575
  • Pages : 234 pages

Download or read book Evacuation written by Peter Adey and published by Duke University Press. This book was released on 2024-08-16 with total page 234 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In Evacuation, Peter Adey examines the politics, aesthetics, and practice of moving people and animals from harm during emergencies. He outlines how the governance and design of evacuation are recursive, operating on myriad political, symbolic, and affective levels in ways that reflect and reinforce social hierarchies. Drawing on a wide range of case studies, from the retrieval of wounded soldiers from the battlefield during World War I and escaping the World Trade Center on 9/11 to the human and animal evacuations in response to the 2009 Australian bushfires and the 2010 Haiti earthquake, Adey demonstrates that evacuation is not an equal process. Some people may choose not to move while others are forced; some may even be brought into harm through evacuation. Often the poorest, racialized, and most marginalized communities hold the least power in such moments. At the same time, these communities can generate compassionate, creative, and democratic forms of care that offer alternative responses to crises. Ultimately, Adey contends, understanding the practice of evacuation illuminates its importance to power relations and everyday governance.

Book Surviving the Evacuation Book 19 Welcome to the End of the Earth

Download or read book Surviving the Evacuation Book 19 Welcome to the End of the Earth written by Frank Tayell and published by Frank Tayell. This book was released on 2022-02-20 with total page 283 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Fourteen months after the outbreak, thirteen months after the nuclear war, the old world is gone, but a new world is emerging. The evacuation of Britain failed, but other evacuations were a success. In Canberra, a new civilisation is being born, but in Canada, the survivors bid a last and final farewell to the Atlantic. While a final evacuation of Nova Scotia is planned, the search for lost communities begins. The journey takes Bill and Kim to the very end of the Earth, and to a meeting with familiar strangers. Crossing the border, Sholto endures a bittersweet return to the country he’d embraced so many decades ago. The United States he remembered is gone, and yet he can see its shadow among the burned ruins and desolate towns of the American Northeast. But the rains soon turn to a flood that washes away the few bridges not destroyed during the failed quarantine. With no other escape from the deluge, they take to the river. On the Hudson, they sail into the middle of a civil war. When they learn one faction is led by the last surviving member of the political conspiracy that spawned the apocalypse, it is obvious which side to take. Set among the thawing wilderness of Quebec and Ontario, the swollen rivers and flooded roads of New York, and in the courtrooms of Canberra, this novel includes characters and events from the five-part Pacific-based series Life Goes On.

Book Women and Evacuation in the Second World War

Download or read book Women and Evacuation in the Second World War written by Maggie Andrews and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2019-08-08 with total page 306 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Groups of young evacuees, standing on railway stations with gas masks and cardboard suitcases have become an iconic image of wartime Britain, but their histories have eclipsed those of women whose domestic lives were affected. This book explores the effects of this unparalleled interference in the domestic lives of women, looking at the impact on everyday experience and on ideas of femininity, domesticity and motherhood. Maggie Andrews argues that wartime evacuation is important for understanding the experience and the contested meanings of domesticity and motherhood in the 20th century. As this book shows, evacuation represents a significant and unrecognised area of women's war work, and precipitated the rise of competing public discourses about domestic labour and motherhood.

Book The Great Betrayal

Download or read book The Great Betrayal written by Audrie Girdner and published by . This book was released on 1969 with total page 602 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "In an ominous departure from American constitutional guarantees 100,000 West Coast American Japanese were evacuated and interned during World War II. Here is the whole shameful story, told in full for the first time. It is a story told largely in the words of the people themselves, about their reactions and experiences in their cataclysmic uprooting that robbed them of their homes, their businesses, their farms, their sense of belonging to a nation that repudiated solely on grounds of racial ties with the enemy, although the overwhelming majority of them had clear records of responsible and loyal citizenship, the young children and elders among them could not possibly have posed a threat to security, and the American-born men were asked to contribute to the very war effort they were assumed to jeopardize. This is the drama of their confinement, of their eventual release and gradual reacceptance by their countrymen, whose hysteria, whipped on by racial hate groups, was sanctioned by the highest tribunal of the land (through decisions which still stand unreversed today). Now, twenty-five years later, 'the apologies have been made, the reparations attempted, the claims settled, and the citizenship of the renunciants restored,' wrote the authors, 'but the evacuation cannot be relegated to a dusty corner of history. As a departure from American principles, it will stand as an aberration and a warning'"--

Book excerpt: An “informative and vividly reported book” that goes beyond the politics of climate change to explore practical ways we can adapt and survive (San Francisco Chronicle). Journalist Mark Hertsgaard has reported on global warming for outlets including the New Yorker, NPR, Time, and Vanity Fair. But it was only after he became a father that he started thinking about the two billion young people worldwide who will spend the rest of their lives coping with mounting climate disruption. In Hot, he presents a well-researched blueprint for how all of us―parents, communities, companies, and countries―can navigate this unavoidable new era. Reporting from across the nation and around the world, Hertsgaard provides examples of ambitious attempts to mitigate the effects of sea-level rise, mega-storms, famine, and other threats—and an “urgent message . . . that citizens and governments cannot afford to ignore” (The Boston Globe). “This readable, passionate book is surprisingly optimistic: Seattle, Chicago, and New York are making long-term, comprehensive plans for flooding and drought. Impoverished farmers in the already drought-stricken African Sahel have discovered how to substantially improve yields and decrease malnutrition by growing trees among their crops, and the technique has spread across the region; Bangladeshis, some of the poorest and most flood-vulnerable yet resilient people on earth, are developing imaginative innovations such as weaving floating gardens from water hyacinth that lift with rising water. Contrasting the Netherlands’ 200-year flood plans to the New Orleans Katrina disaster, Hertsgaard points out that social structures, even more than technology, will determine success, and persuasively argues that human survival depends on bottom-up, citizen-driven government action.” —Publishers Weekly “His analysis of the impact of global warming on industries as different as winemaking and insurance is intriguing, and his well-supported conclusion that social change can beat back climate change is inspiring . . . an exceptionally productive approach to a confounding reality.” —Booklist “This is an important book.” —Bill McKibben
