Book Fields of Plenty Fields of Lean

Book excerpt: This paper reports the results of an empirical analysis of the early career outcomes of recent Canadian Bachelor's level graduates by discipline based on three waves of the National Graduates Surveys, which comprise large, representative databases of individuals who successfully completed their programmes at Canadian universities in 1982, 1986, and 1990, with information gathered during interviews conducted two and five years after graduation for each group of graduates (1984/87, 1988/92, 1990/95). The outcomes analysed, all broken down by sex and discipline, include: the distribution of graduates by field and the percentage of female graduates; the percentage of graduates who subsequently completed another educational programme; the overall evaluation of the choice of major (would they choose it again?); unemployment rates; the percentage of workers in part-time jobs, in temporary jobs, self-employed; the job-education skill and credentials matches; earnings levels and rates of growth; and job satisfaction (earnings, overall). Many of the outcomes conform to expectations, typically reflecting the different orientations of the various disciplines with respect to direct career preparedness, with the professions and other applied disciplines generally characterised by lower unemployment rates, closer skill and qualification matches, higher earnings, and so on. On the other hand, while the "applied" fields also tend to perform well in terms of the "softer", more subjective measures regarding job satisfaction and the overall evaluation of the chosen programme (would the graduate choose the same major again?), the findings also indicate that graduates' assessments of their post-graduation experiences and overall evaluations of the programmes from which they graduated are based on more than simply adding up standard measures of labour market "success", with the job satisfaction scores and - perhaps most interestingly - the overall programme evaluations often departing from what the objective measures (unemployment rates, earnings levels, etc.) might have predicted. Some implications of the findings are discussed and avenues for future research are suggested.

Book Renovating the Ivory Tower

Download or read book Renovating the Ivory Tower written by Canadian Economics Association and published by . This book was released on 2002 with total page 300 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume brings together papers presented at two sessions dealing with the current state of affairs at Canadian universities. The papers discuss some of the challenges that these institutions face and their success in meeting them, and also offer suggestions about public policies that might make their contributions to Canadian life more effective. The introduction outlines historical background, institutional factors, the role of universities, and the substantive findings of the other papers in this volume. Paper two reviews university education in the knowledge economy and the challenges of accessibility & quality. The third paper discusses the change in enrollment structure toward greater numbers of women and the fourth covers the global hunt for talent and the growth of Internet-based recruiting in Canada. Paper five examines research performance at the top Canadian universities relative to those in the United States. Paper six uses data from the National Graduates Survey to present new evidence on earnings differences by discipline among three cohorts of recent Canadian university graduates. The final two papers estimate economic returns to university education and discuss the implications for tuition policy. Critical commentary on the papers is also included in two separate sections.

Book Earnings Differences by Major Field of Study

Download or read book Earnings Differences by Major Field of Study written by Ross Finnie and published by . This book was released on 1999 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This paper reports the results of an empirical analysis of earnings differences by major field of study for three cohorts of recent Canadian Bachelor's level university ("college") graduates. The principal findings include that earnings differences by discipline are statistically significant and in many cases large; that adding various control variables to the relevant regression models typically reduces the discipline effects but significant differences remain; and that the patterns are relatively consistent for male and female graduates, for the two points in time (two and five years) following graduation observed, and for the three cohorts of graduates, although there are some notable departures from these norms. A simple measure of the (conditional) variability of earnings (individuals' regression-based predicted earnings levels versus their actual levels) indicates that overall conditional variability in earnings has been relatively constant across cohorts, while some interesting patterns by discipline are observed. Various implications of the findings are discussed.

Download or read book Job Market Reality for Postsecondary Graduates written by W. Clark and published by Statistics Canada = Statistique Canada. This book was released on 1981 with total page 518 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Based on the 1978 survey of the labor market experiences of 1976 university and college graduates in Canada in the two years after graduation, this report examines the relations and implications of the education-employment nexus for both male and female graduates. Following a review of the background, scope, objectives, audience, methodology and" reliability of data, sections include: an explanation of standard tables; total university and college graduates, Canada and the Provinces (labor market outcomes); labor market experiences in rank order, by field of study; employment outcomes by field of study (national); provincial comparison by major field of study; and occupations and industries. A section on summary and highlights offers information on the following areas: university fields of study, salary, self-employment, provincial comparisons and retrospective judgment. Numerous highlights were noted such as: business is a fast-growing field with graduates still in demand; one month after graduation, 60 percent of both university and college graduates were working full-time; male graduates earned more than females with similar qualifications and in similar jobs; and employment outcomes varied considerably for graduates living in different provinces in 1978. Appendices include the Canadian Classification Dictionary of Occupation Codes, Standard Industrial Classification Codes, and a questionnaires. (LC)

Book Finding Their Way electronic Resource a Profile of Young Canadian Graduates

Download or read book Finding Their Way electronic Resource a Profile of Young Canadian Graduates written by Mary K. (Mary Katherine) Allen and published by . This book was released on 2003 with total page 40 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This report uses data from the National Graduates Survey to paint a portrait of university and college graduates who are traditionally seen as the mainstream student population. It examines the labour market outcomes of three different cohorts of young graduates starting their transition into the work force at three very different points of the economic cycle: 1986, 1990, & 1995. The study looks at young college & bachelor degree graduates who entered their programs directly from high school and thus excludes older graduates. It provides information on numbers of graduates by gender & discipline, unemployment rates in the changing labour market conditions of 1980-2000, employment prospects both in terms of the transition to employment and job quality, earnings by field of study, and amounts owing on student loans at graduation and two & five years later.

Book The Class of 86 Revisited

Download or read book The Class of 86 Revisited written by Lynn Barr-Telford and published by Human Resources Development Canada. This book was released on 1996 with total page 144 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This report, also funded by Human Resources Development Canada, contains results of the Follow-up of 1986 Graduates Survey (FOG). The FOG survey took place in March 1991 and was the second time that 1986 graduates were interviewed. These graduates were first contacted in May 1988 for the National Graduates Survey (NGS). Over 35,000 respondents to the NGS who were still living in Canada were re-interviewed by telephone for the FOG. The results presented in this report represent the experiences of 1986 graduates of trade/vocational, career/technical and university programs living in Canada in both May 1988 and March 1991. The report looks at 1986 graduates' labour market activities, their earnings, the relationship between their education and labour market activities, and their further educational qualifications five years after graduation. The results of the FOG survey are also compared to those obtained in the NGS which was conducted two years after graduation.
