Book The Job Generation Controversy The Economic Myth of Small Business

Download or read book The Job Generation Controversy The Economic Myth of Small Business written by David Hirschberg and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2015-05-11 with total page 133 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book exposes how the Small Business Administration (SBA) and the National Federation of Independent Business (NFIB), using erroneous data, have developed and perpetuated the belief that "small business creates all the new jobs". It shows further that, since the early 1990s, this belief has become a mantra for allowing the SBA and NBIF to lobby effectively for preferential treatment such as low-interest loans and exemption from mandated employee benefits and worker safety regulations.

Book The Routledge Handbook of the Gig Economy

Download or read book The Routledge Handbook of the Gig Economy written by Immanuel Ness and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2022-10-31 with total page 627 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Research on the growth of the precarious economy is of signifi cant interest as the economy increasingly becomes dependent on gig work. However, as platform and automated service work has grown, there remains a chasm in understanding the key aspects of digital labour. This handbook presents comprehensive theoretical, empirical, and historical accounts of the political economy of informal work from the late 20th century to the present. It examines the rich and varied analysis and critique of the informalisation of work, focusing on its most signifi cant theories, intellectual traditions, and authors. It highlights the political, social, cultural, and developmental impact of the deterioration of employment in the Global North and Global South, as well as the extreme threat posed to the planet by the growth of contingent work, poverty, and enduring and increasing inequalities produced and reproduced by the reformation of capitalism in the contemporary age of neoliberal capitalism. The period from the 1980s to the present is marked by the expanded extraction of surplus value from workers through the creation of non-standard jobs and the restructuring of work. A central component of the restructuring of work is the extension of gig employment through the development of algorithmic platforms which direct labourers to perform discrete tasks. This is a definitive collection, representing the primary reference work, contributing to our understanding of the subject. The book is written and presented in a clear manner, accessible to scholars and researchers of international political economy, labour economics, and sociology who are eager for new research examining this phenomenon, as well as specialists in the field of labour relations. This book was released on 2017-03-01 with total page 117 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Ecological complexity and diverse ecosystems give Central and West Asia rich natural resources and hydrocarbon reserves. Countries in this region are exposed to climate change risks, and there is growing recognition that their carbon-intensive economies necessitate greenhouse gas mitigation. This report assesses the costs, benefits, and investment opportunities for greenhouse gas reduction in the energy and transport sectors of Azerbaijan, Kazakhstan, and Uzbekistan, and discusses indirect benefits of such reduction to human health and energy security. It gives policymakers, practitioners, and academics an overview of policy measures and technologies available for emission reduction, as well as scenarios of future emission trajectories in the three countries.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Around the world, minimum wage controls have excluded low cost competitors from labour markets, hampered firms in reducing wage costs during trade downturns, and caused various industrial-economic inefficiencies as well as unemployment, poverty, and price rises. This study analyses national minimum wage fixing as a special form of political-economic protectionism ¿ the equivalent of tariff barriers to low cost imports. It sees it as violating Treaty of Rome and other basic guarantees of free trade and markets in labour services in Europe. The study contains a detailed critique of the recently established British national minimum wage fixing regime. CONTENTS: 1. MINIMUM WAGE CONTROLS & THEIR EFFECTS: AN OVERVIEW 2.
