Book excerpt: On the final Sundays of Lent, the ancient Roman liturgy had special services "pro scrutinio" for the preparation of catechumens for baptism on Holy Saturday. This leaf has text for the third of these ceremonies, a Mass "in aurium apertione" (i.e., for the "opening of ears"), celebrated on the fifth Sunday of Lent, with a collect and two lessons, one from Isaiah 55 (which appropriately deals with listening), and Colossians 3. The rubric in the first paragraph of the recto is unusual in that it is written in alternating lines of red and black ink (usually, one would expect to see rubrics written in red ink only). Leaf has thin, faint brown stains at three edges; several tiny wormholes, a few letters (including a large "C") at inner margin of recto slightly faded.

Latin is the language in which the New Testament was copied, read, and studied for over a millennium. The remains of the initial 'Old Latin' version preserve important testimony for early forms of text and the way in which the Bible was understood by the first translators. Successive revisions resulted in a standard version subsequently known as the Vulgate which, along with the creation of influential commentaries by scholars such as Jerome and Augustine, shaped theology and exegesis for many centuries. Latin gospel books and other New Testament manuscripts illustrate the continuous tradition of Christian book culture, from the late antique codices of Roman North Africa and Italy to the glorious creations of Northumbrian scriptoria, the pandects of the Carolingian era, eleventh-century Giant Bibles, and the Paris Bibles associated with the rise of the university. In The Latin New Testament, H. A. G. Houghton provides a comprehensive introduction to the history and development of the Latin New Testament. Drawing on major editions and recent advances in scholarship, he offers a new synthesis which brings together evidence from Christian authors and biblical manuscripts from earliest times to the late Middle Ages. All manuscripts identified as containing Old Latin evidence for the New Testament are described in a catalogue, along with those featured in the two principal modern editions of the Vulgate. Book excerpt: While quill and ink were the writing implements of choice in the Anglo-Saxon scriptorium, other colouring and non-colouring writing implements were in active use, too. The stylus, among them, was used on an everyday basis both for taking notes in wax tablets and for several vital steps in the creation of manuscripts. Occasionally, the stylus or perhaps even small knives were used for writing short notes that were scratched in the parchment surface without ink. One particular type of such notes encountered in manuscripts are dry-point glosses, i.e. short explanatory remarks that provide a translation or a clue for a lexical or syntactic difficulty of the Latin text. The present study provides a comprehensive overview of the known corpus of dry-point glosses in Old English by cataloguing the 34 manuscripts that are currently known to contain such glosses. A first general descriptive analysis of the corpus of Old English dry-point glosses is provided and their difficult visual appearance is discussed with respect to the theoretical and practical implications for their future study.

Book excerpt: In early 1256, amidst growing tensions between Parisian secular and mendicant academies, the theologian William of Saint-Amour published his major assault on the friars, De periculis novissimorum temporum, or On the Dangers of the Last Times. As its title proclaims, the treatise employed the exegetical language of apocalypticism to expose the mendicants' success as the ultimate universal threat, and to warn their supporters that they were siding with the Antichrist. Official response to these audacious accusations did not delay. At the instigation of Louis IX of France (St. Louis) - himself an outspoken mendicant sympathizer - the pope banished William from Paris and declared his treatise unorthodox. William's party was silenced, at least for the time being, yet De periculis lived on. For centuries to follow it furnished the basic vocabulary of anti-fraternal polemics through an ever-changing political and religious landscape. Medieval poets, Reformation theologians, modern playwrights - all have drawn upon this anathematized treatise to different ends. The present volume offers a fresh Latin edition of De periculis and its first translation into any modern language. The introduction supplies the immediate context for the treatise's original publication, revises its traditional interpretation, and charts its literary and theological afterlife.

This is the first complete edition and translation of the manuscript to be published, and extensive notes, a critical introduction, and indexes rerum et verborum augment the volume. Inasmuch as some of the treatises appear in later manuscripts located in Britain, Belgium, and Italy, full collations are provided. An appendix reviews more distantly related manuscripts. This edition will make widely available a collection of treatises that has already revised the history of music theory and practice. The treatises collected in the Berkeley Manuscript (olim Phillipps 4450) consider topics as fundamental and diverse as counterpoint, notation, tuning, chant, and speculative matters, for example, the history of the development of the scale. There is thorough coverage of the doctrine of coiuncta, which provides a means for accounting for chromatic accidentals in music, previously thought to be an invention of a century later. The discussion of tuning suggests the possibility of equal temperament some two centuries earlier than had been assumed. Two plates illustrate the edition. The first depicts musical instruments of the fourteenth century; the second provides a representative example of the handwritten manuscript.
