Book excerpt: Excerpt from Catalogue of the Magnificent Collection of United States and Pioneer Gold Coins of Mr. Charles W. Cowell, Denver, Colorado: Including Some of the Greatest Rarities; Kellogg and Co. $50 Gold; Wass, Molitor $50 Gold; Complete Set Pikes Peak Coins, Including the 1850 $20, With View of Peak Mr. Chas. W. Cowell, now past his seventieth year, is one of the very first numismatists of this country and one of the Pioneer col lectors of the Pioneer gold coins, of which his collection is so rich in many of the greatest gems of this most interesting series.. He is a close student of the gold mint marks and of the minor varieties; and to his close study of all coins that come into his possession are due several discoveries of varieties heretofore unknown; chiefly among which is the excessively rare 1834 half-eagle with crossed four, - a variety Mr. Cowell discovered a few years ago. Mr. Cowell was most actively engaged in forming this collection years ago, and, of course, had the opportunity to secure the finest Specimens, as a careful perusal of this catalogue will readily show. While it is quite impossible to mention the numerous rarities of this collection in the preface, yet, it will not be out of place to call special attention to just a few of the greater rarities. In the pioneer series will be found some of the greatest rarities, - the Kellogg co. Gold piece, of which only thirteen specimens are known, is the gem of the collection; the Wass, Molitor and the three other varieties Of octagon gold pieces are about as fine as found; the Pikes Peak coins include the exceedingly rare 1860 and form the only and first complete set offered at auction; the Mormon coins, Miners' Bank, Norris, Griggs Norris and the many beautiful and rare Carolina and Georgia coins; also the largest collection Of California gold dollars, halves and quarter-dollars ever Offered. In United States gold, with the exception of the early half-eagles, the collection is nearly complete. And as regards the Mint Marks, this is, I believe, the most complete collection ever offered. Book Private Gold Coins Struck in the United States 1830 1861 A Complete Illustrated List of the Various Coins Issued by Private Assayers in Georgia Car

Download or read book Private Gold Coins Struck in the United States 1830 1861 A Complete Illustrated List of the Various Coins Issued by Private Assayers in Georgia Car written by Wayte Raymond and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2019-02-12 with total page 38 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Private Gold Coins Struck in the United States, 1830-1861: A Complete Illustrated List of the Various Coins Issued by Private Assayers in Georgia, Carolina, Colorado, Utah, Oregon and California Upon the discovery of gold in California and the influx of prospectors and traders there was an immediate need for a medium of exchange other than the unwieldy bags of gold dust. Several firms struck coins in 1849 and the State Assay Office of California, with Frederick D. Kohler as State Assayer, began stamping ingots early in 1850; a few of these still exist. In the latter part of 1850 the firm of Moffat Co. Were designated as United States Assay representatives and Augustus Humbert of New York was appointed United States Assayer to place the government stamp upon the ingots produced by Moffat Co. This business was in 1852 con ducted under the name of the United States Assay Office. For a full account of the preceding and the operations of other com panies see Edgar H. Adams Private Gold Coinage of California. The Mormon coinage grew out of the same necessity and appeared early in 1849. It did not, however, compare with the California coinages in actual intrinsic value. The firm of Clark, Gruber Co. In Denver coined gold from the Colorado mines and produced over worth in 1860 and 1861. The Parsons and Conway companies were much smaller operators. Way up in Oregon the same need for a medium of exchange produced the two pieces struck by the Oregon Exchange Co. In 1849. It has been thought best to limit the scope of this work to a complete illustrated list of the various coinages, excepting the minor die varieties existing in some of the California pieces.
