Book Triassic Macrostratigraphy of the Western United States and the Ichnology Paleoecology and Paleoenvironments of the Early and Middle Triassic Chugwater Group Wyoming

Download or read book Triassic Macrostratigraphy of the Western United States and the Ichnology Paleoecology and Paleoenvironments of the Early and Middle Triassic Chugwater Group Wyoming written by and published by . This book was released on 2012 with total page 356 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Triassic deposits of the western United States record an extraordinary period of earth's history that records biotic recovery from the end-Permian extinction, the origin of the modern fauna, and the end-Triassic extinction. Tectonic and climatic variability across this interval influenced the preserved architecture of the stratigraphic record. Using a macrostratigraphic approach the spatiotemporal variability of sedimentary attributes within Triassic deposits of the western US are quantified to test hypotheses of these tectonic and climatic influences. Early Triassic deposition demonstrates significant differences in spatiotemporal distribution of lithology, volume, and rates of accumulation compared to deposits of Late Triassic age. Tectonic signals and links to global carbon¬-Early Triassic sedimentation are explored. Building upon this macrostratigraphic foundation, variability in vertebrate track and body fossil preservation is investigated using a similar macrostratigraphic approach. A significant environmentally linked taphonomic bias, which favors track preservation over body fossils, is demonstrated in two post-extinction recovery intervals, the Early Triassic and Early Jurassic. This study further demonstrates that vertebrate tracks precede the presence of inferred trackmaker body fossils by 2 to 32 million years for 6 of 8 major tetrapod clades. A newly discovered vertebrate and invertebrate `hidden' ichnofauna is described from the Early Triassic Red Peak Formation of the Chugwater Group in central Wyoming. Sedimentology and track associations are suggestive of a hygrophilic invertebrate community found dominantly along riparian and lacustrine margins. Vertebrate tracks of Chelonipus extend the temporal range of testinudes by more than 30 million years supporting observations that tracks appear to precede bone. This discovery demonstrates a diverse paleoecology in the northernmost continental rocks of Early Triassic age in North America. Strontium stable isotope geochemistry of the Alcova Limestone, which immediately overlies the Red Peak Formation in central Wyoming was investigated to test hypotheses of deposition. Global marine strontium signals for the Early Triassic show a distinct pattern and are used to confirm a marine origin for the Alcova Limestone, and were further used to reliably constrain the age of the Alcova Limestone to the Spathian (late-Early Triassic), thus permitting an age assignment to the Red Peak ichnoassemblage.

Book The Triassic Timescale

Download or read book The Triassic Timescale written by Spencer G. Lucas and published by Geological Society of London. This book was released on 2010 with total page 528 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Mesozoic Era begins with the approximately 50-million-year-long Triassic Period, a major juncture in Earth history when the vast Pangaean supercontinent completed its assembly and began its fragmentation, and the global biota diversified and modern-ized after the end-Permian mass extinction, the most extensive biotic decimation of the Phanerozoic. The temporal ordering of geological and biotic events during Triassic time thus is critical to the interpretation of some unique and pivotal events in Earth his-tory. This temporal ordering is mostly based on the Triassic time-scale, which has been developed and refined for nearly two centu-ries. This book reviews the state of the art of the Triassic timescale and includes comprehensive analyses of Triassic radio-isotopic ages, magnetostratigraphy, isotope-based and cyclostratigraphic correlations and timescale -relevant marine and non-marine bio-stratigraphy.

Book Triassic Life on Land

    Book Details:
  • Author : Hans-Dieter Sues
  • Publisher : Columbia University Press
  • Release : 2010-04-28
  • ISBN : 9780231509411
  • Pages : 256 pages

Download or read book Triassic Life on Land written by Hans-Dieter Sues and published by Columbia University Press. This book was released on 2010-04-28 with total page 256 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Triassic period is generally viewed as the beginning of the Age of Dinosaurs. For paleontologists, however, it also marks the rise of the world's first modern land ecosystems. Over the past three decades, extensive, worldwide fieldwork has led to the discovery of many new species of Triassic animals and plants, suggesting that faunal and floral changes already began in the Middle Triassic and were more protracted than previously thought. The Late Triassic is a pivotal time in the evolution of life on land, with many of the major groups of present-day vertebrates and insects first appearing in the fossil record. This book provides the first detailed overview of life on land during the Triassic period for advanced students and researchers. Noted vertebrate paleontologists Hans-Dieter Sues and Nicholas C. Fraser also review the biotic changes of this period and their possible causes.

Book Evolution of Primary Producers in the Sea

Download or read book Evolution of Primary Producers in the Sea written by Paul Falkowski and published by Academic Press. This book was released on 2011-08-31 with total page 472 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Evolution of Primary Producers in the Sea reference examines how photosynthesis evolved on Earth and how phytoplankton evolved through time – ultimately to permit the evolution of complex life, including human beings. The first of its kind, this book provides thorough coverage of key topics, with contributions by leading experts in biophysics, evolutionary biology, micropaleontology, marine ecology, and biogeochemistry. This exciting new book is of interest not only to students and researchers in marine science, but also to evolutionary biologists and ecologists interested in understanding the origins and diversification of life. Evolution of Primary Producers in the Sea offers these students and researchers an understanding of the molecular evolution, phylogeny, fossil record, and environmental processes that collectively permits us to comprehend the rise of phytoplankton and their impact on Earth's ecology and biogeochemistry. It is certain to become the first and best word on this exhilarating topic. Discusses the evolution of phytoplankton in the world's oceans as the first living organisms and the first and basic producers in the earths food chain Includes the latest developments in the evolution and ecology of marine phytoplankton specifically with additional information on marine ecosystems and biogeochemical cycles The only book to consider of the evolution of phytoplankton and its role in molecular evolution, biogeochemistry, paleontology, and oceanographic aspects Written at a level suitable for related reading use in courses on the Evolution of the Biosphere, Ecological and Biological oceanography and marine biology, and Biodiversity

Book Western North Atlantic Palaeogene and Cretaceous Palaeoceanography

Download or read book Western North Atlantic Palaeogene and Cretaceous Palaeoceanography written by Geological Society of London and published by Geological Society of London. This book was released on 2001 with total page 332 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Palaeogene and Cretaceous palaeoceanography has been the focus of intense international interest in the last few years, spurred by deep ocean drilling at Blake Nose in the North Atlantic as well as the need to use past climate change as input for modelling future climate change. This book brings together a number of review papers that describe ancient oceans and unique events in the Earth's climatic history and evolution of biota. The papers show evidence of periods characterized by exceptional global warmth such as the Late Palaeocene Thermal Maximum and Cretaceous anoxic events. Geochemical records and modelling will make the reader aware that these periods were forced by greenhouse gases.
