Book Early Travellers in Scotland Classic Reprint

Download or read book Early Travellers in Scotland Classic Reprint written by Peter Hume Brown and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-11-23 with total page 364 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Early Travellers in Scotland The present volume contains a collection, as complete as I have been able to make it, of all the accounts of Scotland published by travellers who visited the country before 1700. Although I have spared no pains to find them, there are doubtless other narratives which have eluded my search, and which would have been an interesting addition to this collection. I specially regret that in my list there is only one traveller from Denmark, and that there are none from Norway or Sweden. It is by the standard of these three countries that Scotland before the eighteenth century can alone be fairly judged; to measure her by the standard of England and France, as the travellers from these countries have naturally done, leaves us with impressions which must to a certain degree be misleading. On inquiry at the best sources, however, both in Norway and Sweden, I have been assured that no traveller in Scotland from these countries before 1700 has left any account of his visit. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Travels in Scotland: Descriptive of the State of Manners, Literature, and Science Various circumstances have retarded the publication of these Travels. The study of manners, considered under a general point of view, in their relation with the Ancient Constitution, with the nature even of Scotland, have been the subjects which have more particularly captivated my attention in this interesting country. My long residence, the inappreciable happiness which I enjoyed of living in the society of distinguished men, who honoured me with their friendship, and aided me with their counsels; in fine, the knowledge of the various dialects in use in the British Isles, - all these have placed me in a favourable position to observe with advantage. Although divers travellers have given the relation of their rapid journeys in Scotland, this Country is still very imperfectly known. This circumstance alone induced me to endeavour to give just ideas of a part of the globe which presents objects of all kinds proper to excite the curiosity of the public. It was almost impossible to live in Scotland, without observing that nature presents a peculiar character, owing to the geographical situation of the country.
