Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Early Travelers to Fort Wayne Having concluded my surveys for this season, I wished to view the country between the St. Mary's and the Miami [maumee] rivers, in order to examine for myself the practicability of uniting the Wabash with the Mi ami so as to render intercourse by water safe and easy between the Ohio and Lake Erie through the channel. I set out yesterday from Shane's Cross ing on the St. Mary's and, traveling through a district of good land on or near the right bank of that river for forty miles, reached this place early in the evening and early this morning I set off to look at the junction of the St. Joseph and the St. Mary's, which two streams form the Miami River. The St. Joseph River, rising in the Michigan Territory, runs south westerly about two hundred miles, receiving in its course several tributary streams. The St. Mary's, rising in Shelby County, Ohio, runs northwest erly more than two hundred miles (including its meanderings). Forming a junction from nearly opposite points, the rivers turn suddenly south and assume the name of Miami of the Lakes, or, as pronounced by the French, Maumee. Then, turning gradually round again, these congregated waters flow off in a northeast direction about two hundred miles, following the course of the river to the southwest end of Lake Erie. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Fort Wayne in 1838Whatever relates to the early history of the place of long residence is of much interest, and more, if time has thrown the period of early incidents far into the past, or if the march of improvement has removed nearly every vestige of early appear ance. For this purpose we shall, for a few days, change the bill of fare which we ordinarily set before our readers, and go back twenty-two years, and after noticing a few places on the road most generally then traveled to and from Fort Wayne, give a bird's-eye view of this place as it appeared in March and during the summer of 1838, hoping to thereby induce others whose history goes back of that period, to give some of their recollections.About the first of March, 1838, the writer for the first time leaving home in Dearborn County, Indiana, was mounted on horse and turned face northward for Fort Wayne, then one of the outposts, and which was reached only after long and tedious journeyings. But it so happened that the ground was frozen, and on it laid a deep and well-packed snow, the depth of which continued to increase as we each day neared the city of our destination, and which we reached on sleds, sleighs, and jumpers, and on horse over the Piqua Road to Fort Wayne.About the PublisherForgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Henry Hay, merchant, traveler, and British partisan, recorded in his Journal the social life and customs of the inhabitants of Miamitown (present-day Fort Wayne) in the winter of 1790-91. Download or read book Reminiscences of Old Fort Wayne Classic Reprint written by Mrs. Lura Case Woodworth and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-01-17 with total page 48 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Reminiscences of Old Fort Wayne Wayne was called to save the nation. The campaign in Ohio and Indiana, which was to give peace to the frontier and loosen the British grip upon the Northwest was the crowning work of Wayne's life. Strictly speaking, the war that called Wayne to the frontier was a prolongation of the War of the Revolution. Though the treaty of peace made with England had been rati fied, it had not been carried out, and while the British could no longer claim territory to the south of the Great Lakes, they encouraged the Indians to hold and fight for these broad lands. In 1792 Washington appointed General Wayne commander-in-chief of the American Army and he was ordered to Pittsburgh to organize troops for the purpose of subduing these Indian tribes. This company was called the Legion of the United States, and the men for the command were gath ered by sweeping the streets and prisons of the eastern cities of their beg gars, tramps, and criminals, and let it be remembered that this was the second sweeping, the first having gone to St. Clair. Download or read book FORT WAYNE THE FRONTIER POST written by Bessie K. Roberts and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2016-09-07 with total page 22 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Fort Wayne, the Frontier Post Quiet streams abounding with fish, forests rich in game brought the Indian to this spot on the three rivers where Fort Wayne stands today. The search for a new route to the Mississippi and a king's favor brought the early French explorer this way. The re demption of souls was the pioneer priest's motive. While the trader dreamed of wealth from the furs and pelts of the wilderness. The three rivers lured them all. And when the trail had been blazed and trading posts and missions established, the settler followed with his goods and family. Fort Wayne, with its rapidly changing skyline, stands on a spot that has been prized by mankind since prehistoric times. The red man believed that he had inherited the place from his father, the Great Spirit. That is why he held it so tenaciously and tried to defend his inheritance against an enemy who proved in time too much for him-his white brother. Book Charcoal Sketches of Old Times in Fort Wayne Classic Reprint

Download or read book Charcoal Sketches of Old Times in Fort Wayne Classic Reprint written by John W. Dawson and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-10-20 with total page 86 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Charcoal Sketches of Old Times in Fort Wayne Mr. Dawson obviously was a very temperate man. He apparently never ceased nor slackened in his denunciation of the use of rum. His fre quent references to the Black Beast of intemperance and the blighting mildew of inebriety reflect his personal attitude toward the use of liquor. Although there may be much truth in what he has to say relative to the use of strong drink. His personal opinions and observations do not seem rele vant nor pertinent to the general reader of articles of this nature. This, as well as his frequent and somewhat lengthy quotations from the Bible and literature, accounts for the aforementioned deletions throughout his sketches and the omission of article X. Charcoal sketches have been presented as Mr. Dawson wrote them. Although, some of the facts are not in complete agreement with the writings of other early Fort Wayne historians. Book Colorful Journalism in Fort Wayne Indiana Classic Reprint

Download or read book Colorful Journalism in Fort Wayne Indiana Classic Reprint written by Herbert G. Bredemeier and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-02-07 with total page 40 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Colorful Journalism in Fort Wayne, Indiana Although French trappers and traders were within the present limits of Indiana as early as 1679, the Indians were not disturbed too much until the lat ter part of the 18th century. The Indiana territory was created in 1800 and Indiana became a state in 1816. By 1810 about one-third of the present state was under the control of the whites and by 1830 two thirds. A large Indiana immigration took place in 1838 and the northern part of the state received a comparatively large influx of inhabitants after that. In 1800 the state had less than S, 000 inhabitants, but by 1830 that number had increased to more than 243, 000. The path of the printer corresponds roughly to this moving frontier line. Before 1810 there was just one printer in the territory at Vincennes. By 1830 there were fifteen more towns in the southern two-thirds of the state which had printing presses.7 When one considers the difficulties of getting a press, paper, and type hauled into the territory, as well as the small number of people who could profitably read and buy the products of the press, it is amazing that there were as many printers as there were. These printers certainly had great faith in the future. The pioneer editor and printer was a hardy soul, and he had to be a very ingenious type of indi vidual. The scarcity of news was always a problem. Many an editor excused the lack of publication of a regular issue by saying that the mails had been de layed or perhaps that unseasonable weather, swollen streams, etc. Had forced the delay of eastern news papers from which he copied many an article. Lack of sound financial support was always a problem. It is no wonder then that many a pioneer editor and printer, if he could not make a living in one place, might try another. If printing a newspaper would not provide a living, something else might. When one knows the predominantly political function of many of the early newspapers, it is not surprising that some editors ended their days as lawyers, mayors, post masters, and Congressmen. G. W. Wood, publisher and editor of the Fort Wayne Times, for example, was elected mayor in 1836. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
