Book Early Sources of English Unitarian Christianity Classic Reprint

Download or read book Early Sources of English Unitarian Christianity Classic Reprint written by Gaston Bonet-Maury and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-08 with total page 312 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Early Sources of English Unitarian Christianity The merits of this volume, as an example of special historical study, are so conspicuous, that it might well dispense with all external commendation: and from mine, I am well aware, no other advantage can be gained than such support as an old man's friendship and esteem may be supposed to afford to a young author's modesty. The investigation to which the following pages are devoted interests me the more, because it takes me up far less as the critic than as the learner, and leaves me grateful for new knowledge and for many a charming or impressive picture from the drama of the past. The author's problem, - to find the source of Unitarian Christianity in this country, - has naturally led him away from the main roads of the revolt from Rome, which ended in the Anglican, the Lutheran, and the Reformed Churches, and thrown him into the eccentric bypaths of the Reformation, where the freer minds are sure to be found, and coherent thought is yet in the making. Whether or not he alights there on the true solution of his problem, I will not venture to pronounce; but as he questions group after group, and elicits their curious enthusiasms, and follows them in their flight from danger, to Emden, to London, to Chiavenna, to Basel, to Poland, he lays bare the very spirit of the times in its ferment of belief and struggle of character. Book Lectures on the Doctrines of Christianity in Controversy Between Unitarians and Other Denominations of Christians

This book was released on 2016-08-30 with total page 378 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Lectures on the Doctrines of Christianity, in Controversy Between Unitarians and Other Denominations of Christians: Delivered in the First Independent Church of Baltimore In commencing, then, a course of Lectures on Chris' tian Doctrine, I cannot do amiss when I attempt to lay, as he did, the foundation of religion in the Unity of God. But on the very threshold of our inquiries we meet a difficulty, we encounter what seems to us an Opposite doctrine, that God is three persons. Before we make any progress, then, we must examine this doc trine. To this subject, therefore, our first three lec tures will be devoted. And While we discuss the doc trine of the Trinity, let nothing which may be said be construed into disrespect, either for the understanding or the integrity of those who hold it. It is a doctrine for which the present generation are not. Responsible. It has been handed down to them by their fathers, With the venerable associations of antiquity; it is interwoven with literature and devotion, and thus has a sacredness in their eyes which takes the place of evidence, and almost precludes calm and dispassionate investigation. The duty of theepresent age is inquiry. Truth is par amount both to authority and sacred association. Our first allegiance is due to Truth. I invite all, then, to the discharge of a duty, when I' invite them to follow me in this discussion. If they adopt my conclusions, in justice to their understandings I should hope it will not be on insufficient ground. If they fail to do so, they will at least exchange a faith derived from tradi tion for one founded on evidence. In the course of these Lectures I shall frequently quote from the Confession of Faith of the divines at Westminster, and from the Thirty-nine Articles of the Church of England 3 not from any unkindness towards those who profess these creeds, or with a de sign to hold them up to odium or derision, but merely because they contain the most formal and authentic statement of the doctrines I shall discuss, and because they are the public and acknowledged standards of large and respectable bodies of the Christian church. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Unitarian, 1886, Vol. 1: A Monthly Magazine of Liberal Christianity Such curious are often done in the name of liberty, that it is well to understand, as clearly as the subject admits, what it means as applied to church life. It has always been the privilege of our Unitarian churches, both in America and England, to maintain their institutions in about the widest, most open freedom ever attempted in any religious body. Any one is free to join our churches, even to come into their innermost fellowship and communion, without any examination. We regard it simply as a question for each man, himself, whether he feels sufficiently in sympathy with our general object and methods and worship to wish to belong with us. If he does, let him come! Even in entering our colleges and our ministry, it is not put to a man to define his belief. What we want to know is: Is he a thoughtful, religious man, earn estly believing in the great central realities of religion - god, worship, im mortality and duty - and, has he also some promise or gift for helping others in religious life? If it is so, we bid him welcome. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Unitarian Review and Religious Magazine, 1875, Vol. 4 And, besides, I am rather glad of these tempting opportunities to define my position. It is an American weakness, you know. But I think I have a good reason for indulging it here and now. My friend, Moncure Conway, in London, who, you know, pro fesses to stand outside of Christianity, but who, with his best eu deavors, has got there only in name, writes me that, after reading a discourse of mine delivered at the dedication of Robert Collyer's church in Chicago, something more than a year ago, he wondered how I could call myself a Christian. I was surprised at his won der, as I had just received a note from our friend Spear, the Sec rotary of the British and Foreign Unitarian Association, asking my consent to the republication, there in England, of that same discourse in a cheap form as a tract. The position looks ambigu ous. Am I really getting outside of Christianity Why, I have been trying ever so long to get inside of it, into the very soul of it. 'i have got but a little way, I know. But I have got so far as to learn that no man yet has counted the unsearchable riches of Christ. When we have mastered that wealth and exhausted it, it will be time enough to think of getting outside of Christian ity, and exploring other mines. In the meanwhile, we may as well try to get outside of the atmosphere of the globe. One can breathe as freely, I imagine, outside of the one as of the other. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Illustrations of Unitarian Christianity, Consisting Chiefly of Practical and Moral Applications of Its Principles: In a Series of Discourses This Volume originates in the Author's deep con viction, that every doctrine has a definite practical tendency; and when at all seriously believed and considered, produces a real influence on the cha racter. Hence, in the course of his preaching, he has made it an especial object to trace and exhibit the effects of the doctrines which he receives as true, and occasionally of those to which he is op posed; and he has been led to think, that a selec tion of Discourses of this character might have some novelty, and a good deal of utility. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The South-Boston Unitarian Ordination We will only add, that there is a way of seeking to ih crease sectarian 'capital' which is not good; that it is unjust as well as ungenerous to attempt, even by insinuation or inter rogatory, to convey the idea that among freemen in Christ Jesus, one is responsible for the errors of another; and that whoever undertakes, directly or indirectly, to excite unfavorable prejudices in the community against a whole class of Christians by trumpeting the peculiarities of here and there an eccentric individual professing to belong to it, ought, at least, to be ashamed of himself. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Oneness: The Christian Church Again, it is said that the human race, though one, is divided into numerous families; and hence it is inferred that the division of the Church into sects is proper and necessary. But the subjects are so dissimilar that it is illogical to reason from the one to the other. The object of the family relation is to perpetuate the race; the object of Christianity is to save it. Division in the first case is the source of strength; but the history of the Church shows that in the other it is an ele ment of weakness. Division in the one case is indispensable, but it is a mere assumption to hold that it is so in the other. There is no analogy between the illustration and the subject to be illustrated. It therefore proves nothing. The inquirer is misled by an imaginary resemblance. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
