Book Early Scenes in Church History with New Content for the Modern Reader

Download or read book Early Scenes in Church History with New Content for the Modern Reader written by George Q. Cannon and published by . This book was released on 2018-03-12 with total page 198 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: LDS Audiobook Foundation is proud to present "Early Scenes in Church History" by George Q. Cannon with additional faith-building content for the modern reader.Early Scenes in Church History, is the eighth in a series of seventeen books called The Faith-Promoting Series. Published between 1879 and 1915, this series of books was published by the Juvenile Instructor's Office for "the Instruction and Encouragement of Young Latter-day Saints." It was George Q. Cannon's inspiration that produced the series, however. In 1866, Cannon, then a member of the Quorum of the Twelve, began publication of a magazine for youth and young adults called The Juvenile Instructor, which he owned and published until his death in 1901, when his family sold the magazine to the LDS Church's Sunday School organization. Thus, in 1882 when the present work, Early Scenes in Church History, was published, it was a work undertaken under the direction of Cannon, with the blessing of the Church's governing leadership. In the preface, the publisher provides that the purpose of the work is to preserve stories of faith from early Church history before they are lost, primarily for the benefit of the next generation of Latter-day Saints. The underlying premise for the work is that the rising generation of Latter-day Saints understand the legacy of faith bequeathed to them and thereby be inspired to acquire their own faith to carry on in the work of the Lord initiated by their spiritual, if not literal, forbearers. Put another way, the premise for the work was to "remember" what God has done for this people, both collectively and individually. Portions of The Faith Promoting Series, including the present work, amount to almost an oral history project of people from Joseph Smith's generation. The simple narratives presented amount to the raw material of history, and preservation of these narratives saved from oblivion many personal and profound experiences of conversion and service. Prophetically writing in one preface, Cannon observed that "men will seek with avidity" for such firsthand information "but a few years hence."

Book Books and Readers in the Early Church

Download or read book Books and Readers in the Early Church written by Harry Y. Gamble and published by Yale University Press. This book was released on 1995-01-01 with total page 356 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This fascinating and lively book provides the first comprehensive discussion of the production, circulation, and use of books in early Christianity. It explores the extent of literacy in early Christian communities; the relation in the early church between oral tradition and written materials; the physical form of early Christian books; how books were produced, transcribed, published, duplicated, and disseminated; how Christian libraries were formed; who read the books, in what circumstances, and to what purposes. Harry Y. Gamble interweaves practical and technological dimensions of the production and use of early Christian books with the social and institutional history of the period. Drawing on evidence from papyrology, codicology, textual criticism, and early church history, as well as on knowledge about the bibliographical practices that characterized Jewish and Greco-Roman culture, he offers a new perspective on the role of books in the first five centuries of the early church.

Book Life and Practice in the Early Church

Download or read book Life and Practice in the Early Church written by Steve McKinion and published by NYU Press. This book was released on 2001-08 with total page 199 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A collection of primary texts revealing how early Christians practiced their faith Life and Practice in the Early Church brings together a range of primary texts from the church's first five centuries to demonstrate how early Christians practiced their faith. Rather than focusing on theology, these original documents shed light on how early believers "did church," addressing such practical questions as, how did the church administer baptism? How were sermons delivered? How did the early church carry out its missions endeavors? Early Christian writings reveal a great deal about the tradition, as well as the wider culture in which it developed. Far from being monolithic, the documents which present the voices of the early church fathers in their own words demonstrate variation and diversity regarding how faith was worked out during the patristic period. The texts illuminate who was eligible for baptism, what was expected of worshippers, how the Eucharist was celebrated, and how church offices and their functions were organized. Contextual introductions explain practices and their development for those with little prior knowledge of Christian history or tradition. The pieces included here, all in accessible English translation, represent such sources as Justin Martyr, Tertullian, the Cappadocians, Cyril of Jerusalem, John Chrysostom, and Augustine.

With all the power and drama of a gripping novel, this book is a journey of discovery of ancient and beautiful truths through the lives of four great saints of the early ChurchClement of Rome, Ignatius of Antioch, Justin Martyr, and Irenaeus of Lyons. "A treasure! The early Church and its teachings come to life in this story. Did the first Christians believe what you believe? Buy this book, read the words of the early Church Herself, and fall in love with the historic Church that Christ Himself founded." - David Currie, Author, Born Fundamentalist, Born Again Catholic "Rod Bennett has immersed himself in the fascinating writings of four early Fathers of the Church and has made the discovery from reading them that sincere and attentive readers of them ought to make. The author's imaginative account of these four great Church Fathers is not only an excellent introduction to their work; it is a convincing rendering of what the early Church must really have been like. This is an important new contribution to Christian apologetics." - Kenneth Whitehead, Author, One, Holy, Catholic and Apostolic

Book A New History of Early Christianity

Download or read book A New History of Early Christianity written by Charles Freeman and published by Yale University Press. This book was released on 2009-01-01 with total page 416 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Tracing the astonishing transformation that the early Christian church underwent - from sporadic niches of Christian communities surviving in the wake of a horrific crucifixion to sanctioned alliance with the state - Charles Freeman shows how freedom of thought was curtailed by the development of the concept of faith. The imposition of 'correct belief' and an institutional framework that enforced orthodoxy were both consolidating and stifling. Uncovering the church's relationships with Judaism, Gnosticism, Greek philosophy and Greco-Roman society, Freeman offers dramatic new accounts of Paul, the resurrection, and the church fathers and emperors."--BOOK JACKET.

Book The Patient Ferment of the Early Church

Download or read book The Patient Ferment of the Early Church written by Alan Kreider and published by Baker Academic. This book was released on 2016-03-29 with total page 336 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: How and why did the early church grow in the first four hundred years despite disincentives, harassment, and occasional persecution? In this unique historical study, veteran scholar Alan Kreider delivers the fruit of a lifetime of study as he tells the amazing story of the spread of Christianity in the Roman Empire. Challenging traditional understandings, Kreider contends the church grew because the virtue of patience was of central importance in the life and witness of the early Christians. They wrote about patience, not evangelism, and reflected on prayer, catechesis, and worship, yet the church grew--not by specific strategies but by patient ferment.

Book The Dictionary of the Bible and Ancient Media

Download or read book The Dictionary of the Bible and Ancient Media written by Tom Thatcher and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2017-10-19 with total page 499 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Dictionary of the Bible and Ancient Media is a convenient and authoritative reference tool, introducing specific terms and concepts helpful to the study of the Bible and related literature in ancient communications culture. Since the early 1980s, biblical scholars have begun to explore the potentials of interdisciplinary theories of oral tradition, oral performance, personal and collective memory, ancient literacy and scribality, visual culture and ritual. Over time these theories have been combined with considerations of critical and exegetical problems in the study of the Bible, the history of Israel, Christian origins, and rabbinics. The Dictionary of the Bible and Ancient Media responds to the rapid growth of the field by providing a source of reference that offers clear definitions, and in-depth discussions of relevant terms and concepts, and the relationships between them. The volume begins with an overview of 'ancient media studies' and a brief history of research to orient the reader to the field and the broader research context of the book, with individual entries on terms and topics commonly encountered in studies of the Bible in ancient media culture. Each entry defines the term/ concept under consideration, then offers more sustained discussion of the topic, paying particular attention to its relevance for the study of the Bible and related literature

Book The Early Church from Ignatius to Augustine

Download or read book The Early Church from Ignatius to Augustine written by George Hodges and published by . This book was released on 2017-04 with total page 118 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book gives a detailed history of the first four centuries of the Christian Church. Important topics include the struggle between Christianity and Pagan Rome, early persecutions, early heresies, and the establishment of monasticism in both the Greek-speaking east, and the West. The Arian controversy is explained in detail, and the life stories of many of the early church fathers are introduced.George Hodges, D.D. DC.L, LL.D. (1856-1919), was a very influential Episcopal clergyman. Born in Rome, New York and educated at Hamilton College, Hodges spent the early part of his career in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, serving as rector at Calvary Church from 1881 to 1894. In 1894 he was called to be dean of the Episcopal Theological School in Cambridge, Massachusetts, a post he held until his untimely death in the influenza epidemic of 1919. As one of the early leaders of the social gospel, he was involved in several philanthropic and ecumenical movements. A prolific author, he wrote many books and articles, mostly for the general reader rather than for a scholarly audience. Although he wrote on a great variety of topics, some having to do with contemporary issues, his most enduring works were those published for young people, on historical and bibilical topics. His first book for children was written for his own Sunday-school classes while he was a pastor in Pittsburgh. His typewritten lessons about the life of Christ were so popular they were expanded, put into book form, and published in 1904 as When the King Came: Stories from the Four Gospels. This book was wonderfully well written, demonstrating Hodges' great talent for storytelling. As one bishop said: "It is a real story, as full of imagination as a fairy tale, as true to fact as history." The book was such a success, Hodges was soon asked to prepare lessons from the Old Testament as well. These Bible stories for children were first printed in The Ladies Home Journal, but later were published in book form, as The Garden of Eden, and The Castle of Zion. He published one other two volume set for children. The first volume, Saints and Heroes to the End of the Middle Ages, gives the lives of twenty early heroes of Christianity. The second volume, Saints and Heroes Since the Middle Ages traces the lives of fourteen later heroes, predominately Protestant heroes from the Reformation era. Also of interest to the general reader are his books on Church history, including The Early Church, from Ignatius to Augustine, which offers a very interesting account of the growth of the Christian church under the Roman Empire, and The Episcopal Church which traces the history of the Church of England from the Reformation to modern times. Andr de Thevet (1516 - 23 November 1590) was a French Franciscan priest, explorer, cosmographer and writer
