Book Early Religious Poetry of the Hebrews Classic Reprint

Download or read book Early Religious Poetry of the Hebrews Classic Reprint written by Edward George King and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-12-19 with total page 176 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Early Religious Poetry of the Hebrews The title Early Religious Poetry of the Hebrews needs a further definition. It is intended to embrace the Poetry of Old Testament times as distinguished from the Poetry of the Synagogue. This will fix our period. But what are we to under stand by Religious Poetry? The Poet is the man whose whole being is in touch with those voices of God that we call Nature. He may, or he may not, be a religious man. In other words, he may, or he may not, recognise the Source of those voices. The Prophet, on the other hand, is the man whose whole being is in touch with the voices of God in Humanity. He must be, more or less, a poet, in the sense in which we have defined the word, but his chief sphere will be the poetry of life. His message will necessarily be conditioned by the age in which he lives. He has his treasure in an earthen vessel and he prophesies in part. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Spirit of the Hebrew Poetry The title of this volume is the same as that of a course of lectures which I delivered at Edinburgh, and afterwards ow, in the winter of 1852. At the time I was asked to publish these lectures; but as in the preparation of them I had not been able to command much leisure, I felt no inclination to bring them forward, such as they were when delivered. But in looking at the notes of those lectures, once and again in the course of these ten years, they seemed to contain some germs of thought which might be brought bear upon the great biblical argument that has lately awakened the attention of the religious community. Book Lectures on the Sacred Poetry of the Hebrews Classic Reprint

Download or read book Lectures on the Sacred Poetry of the Hebrews Classic Reprint written by Robert Lowth and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-03-12 with total page 424 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Lectures on the Sacred Poetry of the Hebrews A still greater mistake it would be, to suppose any knowledge of the Hebrew necessary to enable us to read these Lectures with profit and pleasure. So happily does the simple genius of the Hebrew language accord with our own; and so excellent a transcript of the original (notwithstanding a few errors) is our common translation of the Scriptures; so completely, so minutely, I might say, does it represent the style and character of the Hebrew writings, that no person who is conversant with it can be at all at a loss in applying all the criticisms of our Author. On this account I will venture to assert, that if the genius of the Translator approached in any degree the clearness, the elegance, the elevation of the Author, these Lectures in our own language would exhibit the subject in a much fairer and more advantageous light than in the original form. The English idiom, indeed, has so much greater analogy to the Hebrew, that the advantages which it pos sesses over the Latin must be obvious to any reader who compares the literal translations in each of these languages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This stunning anthology gathers together the riches of poetry in Hebrew from 'The Song of Deborah' to contemporary Israeli writings. Verse written up to the tenth century show the development of piyut, or liturgical poetry, and retell episodes from the Bible and exalt the glory of God. Medieval works introduce secular ideas in love poems, wine songs and rhymed narratives, as well as devotional verse for specific religious rituals. Themes such as the longing for the homeland run through the ages, especially in verse written after the rise of the Zionist movement, while poems of the last century marry Biblical references with the horrors of the Holocaust. Together these works create a moving portrait of a rich and varied culture through the last 3,000 years.

Book The Spirit of Hebrew Poetry Vol 1 of 2 Classic Reprint

Download or read book The Spirit of Hebrew Poetry Vol 1 of 2 Classic Reprint written by Johann Gottfried Herder and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-02 with total page 302 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Spirit of Hebrew Poetry, Vol. 1 of 2 The work, 'of which a translation is here ofi'ered to the publick, has long been celebrated in Germany, as one of distinguished merit. On its first publication it did much to awaken and cherish the taste for Oriental and especially Hebrew antiquity, which has since so extensively prevailed among the scholars of that coun try. It taught them, too, in the study of Hebrew an tiquity and Hebrew poetry, as the works of Lessing, Winkelmann, and others had done in regard to Grecian antiquity, to divest themselves of the conceptions, and modes of thought, which are peculiar to their own country and institutions, and of the peculiar spirit of their own age; by the force of imagination to place themselves in the condition ofthose'ancient patriarchs and prophets, whose thoughts and feelings they seek to apprehend to see the world as they saw it, to feel as they felt, to imbibe and to express their Spirit in its truth and simplicity. Hence, though Germany has since been fruitful in works connected with Hebrew poetry and history, and though the great work of Bp. Lowth has been translated and is appreciated there, this still retains its place, as a classical and standard work. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Hebrew Poetry: Sunday Afternoon Lectures Before the Greensboro Law School Poetry is an interesting and instructive part of a nation's history, as it is a production of the intellectual and moral faculties, feelings and sentiments of the people. These faculties, feelings and sentiments are awakened and intensified, in a great degree, by the spectacles of natural beauty and usefulness presented in the earth, seas and skies, which are produced bv the wondrous combina tions of physical laws and agencies everywhere evidencing a wisdom, power and goodness, higher, purer and vaster than human intellect and benevolence; and ever lifting the soul in love, adoration and praise to the great Creator and benefactor, and to the immortal life of a higher and more effulgent glory yet to come. In the poetry of a nation we can feel the pulse-throb of national life that shows its healthful development or decay.
