Book excerpt: The structures discovered on the Brecon Forest Tramroads illustrate the beginnings of modern railway practice. This first detailed archaeological study of a railway illuminates parallels located elsewhere in Britain. Developments that were to be of world importance. Did iron railway bridges exist before George Stephenson? This book shows that such bridges were built in south Wales thirty years before the construction of Stephenson's Gaunless Viaduct on the Stockton and Darlington Railway and explains where to see these bridges today. Numerous stone viaducts, bridges and causeways were built over gorges. Monumental building detail existed years before the Euston Arch. Even the foundations of American Industrial might were laid here. Book The Severn Valley Railway

Download or read book The Severn Valley Railway written by Michael A. Vanns and published by Casemate Publishers. This book was released on 2017-06-30 with total page 179 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Severn Valley Railway has long been considered by many to be Britains premier heritage railway. That reputation was earned early thanks to the quality of locomotive and carriage restoration, the careful refurbishment of stations and the standard of service offered to visitors. As with all heritage railways it has had to adapt to changing expectations over the years whilst attempting to keep the original aims of railway preservation at the heart of everything it does. This guide traces the history of the original Severn Valley Railway from the early plans of the 1840s, through its days when operated by first the Great Western Railway and then British Railways. The last chapter looks at the challenges and the achievements of the preservation era and the whole narrative should be of interest to anyone keen to know more of the story of a national treasure.

Book The Coming of the Railway

Download or read book The Coming of the Railway written by David Gwyn and published by Yale University Press. This book was released on 2023-01-01 with total page 432 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The first global history of the epic early days of the iron railway Railways, in simple wooden or stone form, have existed since prehistory. But from the 1750s onward the introduction of iron rails led to a dramatic technological evolution--one that would truly change the world. In this rich new history, David Gwyn tells the neglected story of the early iron railway from a global perspective. Driven by a combination of ruthless enterprise, brilliant experimenters, and international cooperation, railway construction began to expand across the world with astonishing rapidity. From Britain to Australia, Russia to America, railways would bind together cities, nations, and entire continents. Rail was a tool of industry and empire as well as, eventually, passenger transport, and developments in technology occurred at breakneck speed--even if the first locomotive in America could muster only 6 mph. The Coming of the Railway explores these fascinating developments, documenting the early railway's outsize social, political, and economic impact--carving out the shape of the global economy as we know it today.

Book The Shropshire Montgomeryshire Light Railway

Download or read book The Shropshire Montgomeryshire Light Railway written by Peter Johnson and published by Pen and Sword Transport. This book was released on 2024-04-30 with total page 402 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Shropshire & Montgomeryshire Light Railway, was one of the lines managed and operated by Colonel Holman Fred Stephens from his office in Salford Terrace in Tonbridge Kent. It was a revival of the long disused Potteries Shrewsbury & North Wales Railway, a railway that went bankrupt shortly after opening in the mid 1860s and was left derelict for forty years. The railway reopened in 1911 to much local rejoicing, however the company was in financial difficulties by the 1920s and withdrew its passenger services in the early 1930s. During the Second World War the army took over the railway, constructing ammunition and stores depots along its entire length. After the war the railway continued to be operated by the army until closed in 1960, when it was handed over to the Western Region of British Railways for demolition. The author has researched the history of this fascinating bucolic railway over many years. In this new book he presents much previously unpublished information and many fascinating insights into the railway’s complicated history.
