Download or read book Crucible of Pueblos written by James R. Allison and published by Cotsen Institute of Archaeology Press. This book was released on 2012-12-31 with total page 300 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Archaeologists are increasingly recognizing the early Pueblo period as a major social and demographic transition in Southwest history. In Crucible of Pueblos: The Early Pueblo Period in the Northern Southwest, Richard Wilshusen, Gregson Schachner and James Allison present the first comprehensive summary of population growth and migration, the materialization of early villages, cultural diversity, relations of social power, and the emergence of early great houses during the early Pueblo period. Six chapters address these developments in the major regions of the northern Southwest and four synthetic chapters then examine early Pueblo material culture to explore social identity, power, and gender from a variety of perspectives. Taken as a whole, this thoughtfully edited volume compares the rise of villages during the early Pueblo period to similar processes in other parts of the Southwest and examines how the study of the early Pueblo period contributes to an anthropological understanding of Southwest history and early farming societies throughout the world.

Download or read book Chimney Rock written by J. McKim Malville and published by Lexington Books. This book was released on 2004 with total page 262 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume sheds new light on the geography and the history of the Chimney Rock Archaeological Area in southwestern Colorado. Home until the mid-twelfth century to the ancestral Pueblo peoples, the Chaco Canyon and Chimney Rock area holds a wealth of information for present-day archaeologists to uncover. This collection investigates the architecture, location, and alignment of Pueblo great houses and the significant features of designed clay feather holders. The contributors suggest varied pre-historical uses for the towering double spires of Chimney Rock: as a logging camp, military garrison, home of Chacoan priests, astronomical observatory, and/or ceremonial-pilgrimage center. Chimney Rock: The Ultimate Outlier is a model of multi-faceted inquiry into a physically intriguing and certainly symbol-laden ancient North American residential site.

Download or read book The American Southwest and Mesoamerica written by Jonathon E. Ericson and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-11-11 with total page 310 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Regional approaches to the study of prehistoric exchange have generated much new knowledge about intergroup and regional interaction. The American South west and Mesoamerica: Systems of Prehistoric Exchange is the first of two volumes that seek to provide current information regarding regional exchange on a conti nental basis. From a theoretical perspective, these volumes provide important data for the comparative analysis of regional systems relative to sociopolitical organization from simple hunter-gatherers to those of complex sociopolitical entities like the state. Although individual regional exchange systems are unique for each region and time period, general patterns emerge relative to sOciopolitical organization. Of significant interest to us are the dynamic processes of change, stability, rate of growth, and collapse of regional exchange systems relative to sociopolitical complexity. These volumes provide basic data to further our under standing of prehistoric exchange systems. The volume presents our current state of knowledge about regional exchange systems in the American Southwest and Mesoamerica. Each chapter synthesizes the research findings of a number of other researchers in order to provide a synchronic view of regional interaction for a specific chronological period. A diachronic view is also prOvided for regional interaction in the context of the developments in regional SOciopolitical organization. Most authors go beyond description by proposing alternative models within which to understand regional interaction. The book is organized by geographical and chronological divisions to pro vide units of the broader mosaic of prehistoric exchange systems.
