Book excerpt: Publishers Weekly Top 10 Best of the Year In her new collection, Story Prize finalist Maureen F. McHugh delves into the dark heart of contemporary life and life five minutes from now and how easy it is to mix up one with the other. Her stories are post-bird flu, in the middle of medical trials, wondering if our computers are smarter than us, wondering when our jobs are going to be outsourced overseas, wondering if we are who we say we are, and not sure what we'd do to survive the coming zombie plague. Praise for Maureen F. McHugh: "Gorgeously crafted stories."—Nancy Pearl, NPR "Hauntingly beautiful."—Booklist "Unpredictable and poetic work."—The Plain Dealer Maureen F. McHugh has lived in New York; Shijiazhuang, China; Ohio; Austin, Texas; and now lives in Los Angeles, California. She is the author of a Story Prize finalist collection, Mothers & Other Monsters, and four novels, including Tiptree Award-winner China Mountain Zhang and New York Times editor's choice Nekropolis. Book Revival The Structure of Asia 1976

Download or read book Revival The Structure of Asia 1976 written by John Walter Gregory and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2018-12-20 with total page 174 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: At this time of narrow specialization in science, it seems almost impossible to fully grasp the personality of John Walter Gregory and his impact on the evolution of geological concepts. He belonged to the generation of unusual men who by their endeavors in different technical fields made the British Emprire into a domain where the sun never set. Gregory was a brilliant thinker endowed with the rare combination of an incredible memory for facts and a capacity for synthesis, and, as his explorations extended across all continents, he thus became an authority on the world as a whole. Nonetheless, he remained modest, sincere, and simple and always friendly toward his peers and his students. There are few scientific fields to which he did not contribute. In our present world of computer language he would be characterized by the key-words of geology, georgraphy, engineering, and sociology, a combination of disciplines which today appear unthinkable. In his time he was a scholar, a teacher, an adventurer, and a man of letters as well.

Book The Variscan Orogeny

    Book Details:
  • Author : K. Schulmann
  • Publisher : Geological Society of London
  • Release : 2014-07-28
  • ISBN : 1862396582
  • Pages : 404 pages

Download or read book The Variscan Orogeny written by K. Schulmann and published by Geological Society of London. This book was released on 2014-07-28 with total page 404 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume summarizes the state of the art of Variscan geology from Iberia to the Bohemian Massif. The European Variscan belt consists of two orogens: the older, northern and the younger, southern. The northern Variscan realm was dominated by Late Devonian–Carboniferous rifting, subduction and collisional events as defined by sedimentary records, crustal growth, recycling of continental crust and large-scale deformations. In contrast, the southern European crust was reworked by major Late Carboniferous collision followed by Permian wrenching. The Late Carboniferous–Permian orogeny overprinted the previously accreted system in the north, but with much lower intensity, resulting in magmatic recycling and extensional tectonics. These two main orogenic cycles do not reflect episodic evolution of a single orogenic system but a complete change in orientation of stress field, thermal regime, degree of reworking and recycling of European crust, reflecting a major switch in plate configurations at the Early–Late Carboniferous boundary.

Book Pre Permian Geology of Central and Eastern Europe

Download or read book Pre Permian Geology of Central and Eastern Europe written by R.D. Dallmeyer and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-06-29 with total page 603 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In August 1990, Project 233 of the International Geological Correlation Program hosted an international conference in G6ttingen/Giessen, Germany. Discussions were focused on the Tectonothermal and Stratigraphic Evolution of the Central European Orogens. The meeting marked the first opportunity for completely open scientific exchange following the recent political reformations in central Europe. This exciting new atmosphere of international cooperation resulted in presentation of a wealth of information which was new to scientists from both sides of former political boundaries. It was apparent that a unique opportunity was available to prepare a systematic overview in a volume dealing with the geology of Central Europe. The present book represents an outgrowth of this conference, but is not merely a compilation of the papers presented in G6ttingen/Giessen. Instead, it represents a coordinated volume designed to present a balanced, comprehensive view of our present understanding of the tectonothermal and stratigraphic evolution of the Central European orogens. We gratefully acknowledge the help of the national funding agencies, who have financed much of the research work summarized in this book, and of the Interna tional Geological Correlation Programme (IGCP, project no. 233) which provided and helped to finance the organisational framework. We are indebted to Springer-Verlag for thorough copy-editing and production of this book, and we sincerely appreciate the efforts of all the reviewers whose com ments have greatly helped to improve the quality of this volume. We also thank the various contributors for their diligence and perseverance in manuscript preparation.

Book The Geology of Germany

    Book Details:
  • Author : Martin Meschede
  • Publisher : Springer
  • Release : 2019-02-26
  • ISBN : 3319761021
  • Pages : 304 pages

Download or read book The Geology of Germany written by Martin Meschede and published by Springer. This book was released on 2019-02-26 with total page 304 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This richly illustrated book presents Germany’s geological evolution in the context of the Earth’s dynamic history. It starts with an introduction to Geology and explains the plate tectonic development, as well as the formation of both ancient and recent mountain belts – namely the Caledonian, Variscan and the modern-day Alps – that formed this part of Europe. A dedicated chapter discusses the origin of earthquakes in Germany, the occurrence of young volcanic rocks and the various episodes of rock deformation and metamorphism at these complex crossroads of plate tectonic history. The book highlights Germany’s diverse geological history, ranging from the origin of the Earth, the formation of deep crystalline rocks, and their overlying sedimentary sequences, to its more recent “ice age” quaternary cover. The last chapter addresses the shaping of the modern landscape. Though the content is also accessible for non-geologists, it is primarily intended for geoscience students and an academic audience.

Book Geological Development of Anatolia and the Easternmost Mediterranean Region

Download or read book Geological Development of Anatolia and the Easternmost Mediterranean Region written by A. H. F. Robertson and published by Geological Society of London. This book was released on 2013 with total page 646 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Anatolia and the easternmost Mediterranean region, especially Turkey, Cyprus and northern Syria, represent an excellent natural laboratory for the study of fundamental geological processes (e.g. rifting, seafloor spreading, ophiolite genesis and emplacement, subduction, exhumation and collision). Their interaction has created an intriguing array of deep-sea basins, microcontinents and suture zones. The volume's 22 papers include a large amount of new field-based information (much of it multidisciplinary and the product of teamwork). After an overview, the volume is divided into four sections: Late Palaeozoic--Early Cenozoic of the Pontides (northern Turkey); Late Palaeozoic--Early Cenozoic of the Taurides--Anatolides (central and southern Turkey); Late Cretaceous--Pliocene sedimentary basins and structural development (central Anatolia to the Mediterranean); Late Miocene--Recent Neotectonics (southern Turkey, Cyprus and northern Syria). The volume will interest numerous academic researchers, those concerned with resources (e.g. hydrocarbons; mineral deposits) and also hazards (e.g. earthquakes), as well as advanced undergraduate and postgraduate students -- P. 4 of cover.
