Book The Dynamics and Use of Lacustrine Ecosystems

Download or read book The Dynamics and Use of Lacustrine Ecosystems written by V. Ilmavirta and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 480 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Limnology is increasingly concerned with water supply and the relation of man to aquatic environments. Without the continued availability of pure water, all progress in technology and other fields of human life will be to no avail. The global problems concerning clear water are already extremely pressing. More limnology knowledge is needed to solve these problems. The responsibility of man to save water and to take more intensive care of the environment is raised in many of the papers, in this book. This emphasizes the necessary and unquestionable relevance of limnology to human society. Too often the abuse of water usage reflects the neglect of scientific results. Limnologists have a responsibility to ensure that administrators understand what is going on. The coverage of the book is wide, including papers on microbiology to engineering sciences. The biology of waters is handled at both species and ecosystem levels. The geographical distribution of topics ranges from the tropics to northern temperate areas. In fact, limnology is increasingly becoming a science which is, rightly, relevant to everyday life, not just an academic subject.

Book Biology and Management of Coregonid Fishes 2005

Download or read book Biology and Management of Coregonid Fishes 2005 written by Małgorzata Jankun and published by . This book was released on 2007 with total page 534 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Coregonids (whitefish, vendace, cisco, etc.) are cold-water adapted fishes common throughout the Holarctic in North America, Europe and Asia. They have evolved into a myriad of forms, subspecies and species during and after the Pleistocene glaciations. They are therefore rich subjects for the study of evolutionary problems. Coregonids support important commercial, subsistence and recreational fisheries and are the subject of significant aquaculture operations around the world. Although coregonids are generally considered to be fairly adaptable to the pressures of exploitation, they do appear to be sensitive to changing environmental conditions such as eutrophication and a number of populations and species have been extirpated, usually by deteriorating environments coupled with the introduction of exotic species and by commercial exploitation. This sizeable volume contains 40 peer-reviewed contributions on current topics of coregonid research presented at the Ninth International Symposium on the Biology and Management of Coregonid Fishes, held in August 2005, in Olsztyn, Poland. They cover all aspects of coregonid life and managment. The contributions can be grouped into of five subject areas: genetics and evolution; biology, life history and population dynamics; invasive species; fisheries in Europe and fisheries in North America

Book Lake Whitefish Reproductive Ecology in Connected and Open Waters of Green Bay Lake Michigan

Download or read book Lake Whitefish Reproductive Ecology in Connected and Open Waters of Green Bay Lake Michigan written by Andrew Ransom and published by . This book was released on 2019 with total page 126 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Widespread shifts in the Great Lakes food web are thought to be generating corresponding changes in lake whitefish (Coregonus clupeaformis) population levels and growth patterns, creating considerable concern among managers. Lake whitefish within Lake Michigan proper have been declining, but populations in Green Bay have shown a resurgence in recent years. Year class strength of lake whitefish is often set during early life history, and little research at the larval stage has been conducted after these stock changes have been observed. Chapter one investigates the distribution of lake whitefish in Green Bay at the pelagic drifting larval stage. Larvae were documented throughout the entirety of the bay for the first time, and appear to have recolonized historical spawning areas in the southern end. Abiotic variables found to influence larval distribution include water temperature, distance to shore, and proximity to a hatch cohort. Chapter two is focused on newly reestablished spawning populations in Wisconsin tributaries to Green Bay (Fox, Oconto, Peshtigo, and Menominee rivers). Reproductively ready adults have been observed during the time of spawn in late fall for the last 8-10 years, but specific spawning habitats and extent of larval production had not been investigated until now. Highest densities of observed adults were focused in areas of cobble substrates and increased flow, and peak abundances of spawners was most associated with lunar cues after water temperatures reached known thermal preferences of the species (
