Book excerpt: Excerpt from Early Latin Hymns: With Introduction and Notes In two things I have departed from Mr Walpole's intention. The first is in regard to textual criticism. I have explained in the section on the d104 what resolu tion he had come to, and why it seemed to me unsatis factory. The second point concerns the contents. Mr Walpole designed to give m an appendix, without note or comment, a number of Latin hymns which did not come into the definition which governed his choice of the 127 here presented. A good many of them were pieces of Prudentius, like 0 sola magnamm urbz'um and Qui cumgue Ckm'stzzm which were not, so far as we know, used as hymns in ancient days. Others were well known hymns like Exullel caelum laudz'bm, and Alleluia dulce cam/zen, about which it seemed to be necessary to explain why they were not in the body of the book. Entries contain the following information, where applicable: the incipit, followed by the subject of the hymn, followed by the author, then references to where the text of the hymn can be found in print and manuscript form. The text was originally intended to be the chief feature of a book on Hymns and Canticles in the series of Handbooks of Liturgical Study edited by Professor H. B. Swete and Dr J. H. Srawley, but when completed it proved to be so large that it was necessary to publish it as a separate volume. Book J S Bach s Material and Spiritual Treasures

Download or read book J S Bach s Material and Spiritual Treasures written by Noelle M. Heber and published by Boydell & Brewer. This book was released on 2021 with total page 287 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In Johann Sebastian Bach's Lutheran church setting, various biblical ideas were communicated through sermons and songs to encourage parishioners to emulate Christian doctrine in their own lives. Such narratives are based on an understanding that one's lifetime on earth is a temporal passageway to eternity after death, where souls are sent either to heaven or hell based on one's belief or unbelief. Throughout J. S. Bach's Material and Spiritual Treasures, Bach scholar Noelle M. Heber explores theological themes related to earthly and heavenly 'treasures' in Bach's sacred music through an examination of selected texts from Bach's personal theological library. The book's storyline is organised around biblical concepts that are accented in Lutheran thought and in Bach's church compositions, such as the poverty and treasure of Christ and parables that contrast material and spiritual riches. While focused primarily on the greater theological framework, Heber presents an updated survey of Bach's own financial situation and considers his apparent attentiveness to spiritual values related to money. This multifaceted study investigates intertwining biblical ideologies and practical everyday matters in a way that features both Bach's religious context and his humanity. This book will appeal to musicologists, theologians, musicians, students, and Bach enthusiasts.

Book Religions of Late Antiquity in Practice

Download or read book Religions of Late Antiquity in Practice written by Richard Valantasis and published by Princeton University Press. This book was released on 2018-06-05 with total page 528 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is an unprecedented collection of nearly seventy Late Antique primary religious texts. These texts--all in new English translation and many appearing in English for the first time--represent every major religious current from the late first century until the rise of Islam. Produced through the efforts of thirty-six leading scholars in the field, they constitute a comprehensive view of religious practice in Late Antiquity. Religious life and performance during this period comprised diverse, often unusual practices. Philosophical ascent, magic, legal pronouncement, hymnography, dietary and sexual restriction, and rhetoric were all part of this deeply fascinating world. Religious and political identity often intertwined, as reflected in the Roman persecution of Christians. And a fluid boundary between religion and superstition was contested in daily life. Many practices, including ascetic training, crossed religious boundaries. Others, such as "incubation" at specific temples and certain divination rites, were distinctive practices of individual groups and orders. Intrinsically interesting, the practice of religion in the Late Antique also edifies modern-day religious life. As this volume shows, the origins of the contemporary Western religious terrain can be gleaned in this period. Rabbinic Judaism flourished and spread. Christianity developed still-important theological categories and structures. And even movements that did not survive intact--such as Neoplatonism and the once-powerful Manichaean churches--continue to influence religion today. This rich sourcebook includes discussions of asceticism, religious organization, ritual, martyrdom, religion's social implications, law, and theology. Its unique emphasis on practice and its inclusion of texts translated from lesser-known languages advance the study of religious history in several directions. A strong interdisciplinary orientation will reward scholars and students of religion, theology, gender studies, classical literatures, and history. Each text is accompanied by an introduction and a bibliography for further reading and research, making the book appropriate for use in any university or seminary classroom.
