Book Early Johnstown Biographies

Download or read book Early Johnstown Biographies written by Brian J. Ensley and published by . This book was released on 2002-01-01 with total page 276 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: County histories are known for their very valuable biography sections. In 1907, Henry Wilson Storey, Sr. published a three-volume set entitled History of Pennsylvania. In this work, he detailed the early history of Cambria County and included several biographical sketches of its early and prominent citizens. Earlier, in 1896, Biographical and Portrait Cyclopedia of Cambria County, PA was published. This book was a biographical sketch of Cambria Countys early prominent citizens. These books were such valuable genealogical research tools that Brian was motivated to extend this project and carry on with more biographies. Some of these families were very prominent and some were not, but all were equally important in the development of this area. A few of these families were already covered in one of the earlier mentioned books, but additional data was added. In the introduction Brian outlines the geographical area showing how the different municipalities came about and where they are in relation to each other. It is important to note that Cambria County was formed on March 6, 1804 from portions of Huntingdon County to the north and Somerset County (created in 1795 from Bedford County) in the south. This reference includes over 600 biographies, 21 photographs, Brown and St. Clair Cemeteries, map of Johnstown Wards, and a surname index for the entire book.

Book excerpt: In this photographic history of Johnstown, readers will enjoy more than two hundred rare images, many published here for the first time, from the collections of historical organizations and private individuals. After enduring three devastating floods, residents have adopted the phrase "This town won't die" as a testament to their gritty determination to survive and to be seen as more than flood victims. Johnstown records the true American Dream: the faces of immigrants building their lives in a new country; the expansive golden age of American industrial growth in the steel, mining, and railroad industries; a community's iron will in the face of destruction; and a snapshot of human bonds through love for family and nation, as well as an inherent faith.

Johnstown's founder, Sir William Johnson, built his baronial home here in 1762. Shortly after, he laid out a small settlement, which he named John's Town after his son John. Johnstown has evolved significantly since the late eighteenth century and has left in its historical path many unique features: the Battle of Johnstown, one of the last battles of the American Revolution, was fought here in 1781, and the famous suffragist Elizabeth Cady Stanton was born here.
