Download or read book Early Italian History and the birth of the Giasolli name written by Vincent Giasolli and published by Lulu.com. This book was released on 2013-11-26 with total page 39 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Italy was the first country to create homes for abandoned children. Although most European countries did not adopt homes for foundlings until the nineteenth century, Pope Innocent III opened one in Milan in 1198. Northern cities began opening hospitals and churches to abandoned babies and soon foundling homes were established for the sole purpose of raising abandoned infants. To encourage discretion, these institutions installed a rotating box, allowing complete dis-cretion. Over time, the realization that this discretion also encouraged the unwed mothers absolute secrecy and a father's lack of responsibility created a backlash in society and the "foundling wheel" began to be removed in 1860. In the 1870's Italian law began recording specifics of each child's birth. Mario Giasolli was born in 1833, and abandoned in a foundling hospital. The Giasolli surname was a creation of tradition and local dialect.

Download or read book Countering online hate speech written by Gagliardone, Iginio and published by UNESCO Publishing. This book was released on 2015-06-17 with total page 73 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The opportunities afforded by the Internet greatly overshadow the challenges. While not forgetting this, we can nevertheless still address some of the problems that arise. Hate speech online is one such problem. But what exactly is hate speech online, and how can we deal with it effectively? As with freedom of expression, on- or offline, UNESCO defends the position that the free flow of information should always be the norm. Counter-speech is generally preferable to suppression of speech. And any response that limits speech needs to be very carefully weighed to ensure that this remains wholly exceptional, and that legitimate robust debate is not curtailed.

Download or read book The Long Waves in Economic Life written by Nikolai D. Kondratieff and published by Ravenio Books. This book was released on with total page 32 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: THE idea that the dynamics of economic life in the capitalistic social order is not of a simple and linear but rather of a complex and cyclical character is nowadays generally recognized. Science, however, has fallen far short of clarifying the nature and the types of these cyclical, wave-like movements. When in economics we speak of cycles, we generally mean seven to eleven year business cycles. But these seven to eleven year movements are obviously not the only type of economic cycles. The dynamics of economic life is in reality more complicated. In addition to the above-mentioned cycles, which we shall agree to call “intermediate,” the existence of still shorter waves of about three and one-half years’ length has recently been shown to be probable. But that is not all. There is, indeed, reason to assume the existence of long waves of an average length of about 50 years in the capitalistic economy, a fact which still further complicates the problem of economic dynamics.
