Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: John Bushman (1843-1926) was the son of Martin Bushman and Elizabeth Degen of Nauvoo, Illinois. He was a descendant of John Henry Bushman, the emigrant who came from Germany in 1753. His grandfather Abraham Bushman married Esther Franks and lived in Lancaster Co., Pennsylvania. They were the parents of ten children. The Degen family emigrated from Switzerland in 1816. John's parents were early converts to the teachings of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and were baptized in 1840. They crossed the plains of America in 1846 after fleeing from Nauvoo, Ill. They resettled at Evansville, now known as Lehi, Utah. John married twice (1) Lois Angeline Smith in 1865 and (2) Mary Ann Petersen in 1877. History includes life story of John Bushman and historical events which concerned family members.

Book excerpt: The history of the United States has been deeply determined by Germans throughout time, but hardly anyone has noticed that this was the case in the Southwest as well, known as Arizona/Sonora today, in the eighteenth century as Pimer a Alta. This was the area where the Jesuits operated all by themselves, and many of them, at least since the 1730s, originated from the Holy Roman Empire, hence were identified as Germans (including Swiss, Austrians, Bohemians, Croats, Alsatians, and Poles). Most of them were highly devout and dedicated, hard working and very intelligent people, achieving wonders in terms of settling the native population, teaching and converting them to Christianity. However, because of complex political processes and the effects of the 'black legend' all Jesuit missionaries were expelled from the Americas in 1767, and the order was banned globally in 1773. As this book illustrates, a surprisingly large number of these German Jesuits composed extensive reports and even encyclopedias, not to forget letters, about the Sonoran Desert and its people. Much of what we know about that world derives from their writing, which proves to be fascinating, lively, and highly informative reading material.

Spurgeon in London; migration to the united States; plus hard experiences in the 'school of anxiety' - which were all precursors for Smale's influential role as champion of Pentecostal revival. Smale's leadership will resonate with every church leader who prays for revival and longs for more Holy Spirit power experimentally. Furthermore, his story is also educative for those contending with some of the more problematic and 'untidy' aspects of Pentecostal-Charismatic experience, involving painful power struggles, hurts, abuse of freedom, spiritual excesses and so on. Smale's 'Moses' designation and biography still have relevance for the church in the present day.

Previous regional research has focused on late prehistory (A.D. 1200 to 1450), shaping the scope of cultural historical overview and providing an opportunity to examine relationships with Casas Grandes (Paquime) to the south. A second important objective of current study is the exploration of prehispanic and early historic human impacts to Borderlands ecosystems, particularly in relation fire ecology. A recommended sequence of future research is intended to address significant questions surrounding both culture history and anthropogenic environments in the Malpai Borderlands.
