A summary section includes the conclusion that field experience in teacher education is threatened by "the lack of commitment by higher education, the low status of clinical faculty, the lack of objective evaluation criteria, the loss of control to teacher unions and state legislatures, and the lack of relationship between field and campus study." In addition to 11 recommendations for improving field programs, descriptions of 17 exemplary field experience programs in the United States and Canada are appended, along with references. (JD)

The success of any plan for improving educational outcomes depends on the teachers who carry it out and thus on the abilities of those attracted to the field and their preparation. Yet there are many questions about how teachers are being prepared and how they ought to be prepared. Yet, teacher preparation is often treated as an afterthought in discussions of improving the public education system. Preparing Teachers addresses the issue of teacher preparation with specific attention to reading, mathematics, and science. The book evaluates the characteristics of the candidates who enter teacher preparation programs, the sorts of instruction and experiences teacher candidates receive in preparation programs, and the extent that the required instruction and experiences are consistent with converging scientific evidence. Preparing Teachers also identifies a need for a data collection model to provide valid and reliable information about the content knowledge, pedagogical competence, and effectiveness of graduates from the various kinds of teacher preparation programs. Federal and state policy makers need reliable, outcomes-based information to make sound decisions, and teacher educators need to know how best to contribute to the development of effective teachers. Book excerpt: To meet the demands of living and working in the 21st century, it is critical that every P-12 student in every classroom have an effective teacher. Yet, each year, thousands of new teachers enter the field unprepared to meet the challenges of today's classroom. Recent federal policies such as No Child Left Behind and Race to the Top have made teacher preparation the primary focus of the debate on educational reform. The purpose of this study was to determine how participation in early field experiences impacts teacher candidate readiness. Performance data from two groups of elementary education teacher candidates were compared. Candidates in the traditional undergraduate pathway completed 111 hours of field experience prior to student teaching. Candidates in the MAT pathway had no early field experience prior to student teaching. Data from three summative assessments, the Teacher Performance Assessment (TPA), Praxis II and the internship final grade, were analyzed to determine if any significant differences existed between the two groups. No significant differences were found between the two groups on the TPA and Praxis II. The analysis of internship final grade showed that the MAT candidates withdrew from student teaching at a significantly higher rate than the undergraduate candidates. To determine if this difference was related to participation in early field experiences, interviews were held with key teacher educators. Qualitative analysis of interview transcripts revealed that lack of teaching experience was a major factor in the withdrawal of MAT candidates.

Book excerpt: College and University teacher education programs' partnerships with public schools have been developed to enhance the learning of teacher candidates and support practicing educators. Teacher candidates' development through early field experiences provides insight into the ways the partnership enhances teacher candidates' translation of theory into practice. This qualitative study examines undergraduate teacher candidates' experiences and learning in a partnership. One element of this partnership involves the teacher candidates participating in coursework and field experiences in the context of the school each semester. The experiences between twelve, third year teacher candidates who participated in the partnership between a K-8 elementary school and a liberal arts college teacher education program are examined. Teacher candidates were observed in their field placements within the partnership. Content analysis of teacher candidate lesson plans was completed. Interviews were conducted to determine the influence of early field experiences on teacher candidate learning. Danielson's (2007) framework is used to analyze data in the areas of Planning and Preparation, Classroom Environment, Instruction, and Professional Responsibilities. Findings indicate that early field experiences within a partnership enhance teacher candidate learning. -- From abstract.
