Book Social Security Programs and Retirement around the World

Download or read book Social Security Programs and Retirement around the World written by Axel Börsch-Supan and published by University of Chicago Press. This book was released on 2021-03-05 with total page 481 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This ninth phase of the International Social Security project, which studies the experiences of twelve developed countries, examines the effects of public pension reform on employment at older ages. In the past two decades, men’s labor force participation at older ages has increased, reversing a long-term pattern of decline; participation rates for older women have increased dramatically as well. While better health, more education, and changes in labor-supply behavior of married couples may have affected this trend, these factors alone cannot explain the magnitude of the employment increase or its large variation across countries. The studies in this volume explore how financial incentives to work at older ages have evolved as a result of public pension reforms since 1980 and how these changes have affected retirement behavior. Utilizing a common template to analyze the developments across countries, the findings suggest that social security reforms have strengthened the financial returns to working at older ages and that these enhanced financial incentives have contributed to the rise in late-life employment.

Book Reforming Early Retirement in Europe Japan and the USA

Download or read book Reforming Early Retirement in Europe Japan and the USA written by Bernhard Ebbinghaus and published by OUP Oxford. This book was released on 2008-10-16 with total page 352 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Since the 1970s early exit from work has become a major challenge in modern welfare states. Governments, employers, and unions alike once thought of early retirement as a peaceful solution to the economic problems of mass unemployment and industrial restructuring. Today governments and international organizations advocate the postponement of retirement and an increase in activity among older workers. Comparing the USA, eight European countries, and Japan, this book demonstrates significant cross-national differences in early retirement across countries and over time. The study evaluates the impact of major variations in welfare regimes, production systems, and labor relations. It stresses the importance of the 'pull factor' of extensive welfare state provisions, particularly in Continental Europe; the 'push factor' of labor shedding strategies by firms, particularly in Anglo-American market economies; and the role of employers and worker representatives in negotiating retirement policies, particularly in coordinated market economies. Over the last three decades, early retirement has become a popular social policy and employment practice in the workplace, adding to the fiscal crises and employment problems of today's welfare states. Attempts to reverse early retirement policies have led to major reform debates. Unilateral government policies to cut back on social benefits have not had the expected employment results due to resistance from employers, workers, and their organizations. Successful reforms require the cooperation of both sides. This study provides comprehensive empirical analysis and a balanced approach to studying both the pull and the push factors affecting early exit from work needed to understand the development of early retirement regimes.

Book Globalization Uncertainty and Late Careers in Society

Download or read book Globalization Uncertainty and Late Careers in Society written by Hans-Peter Blossfeld and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2006-09-27 with total page 401 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Globalization has been strongly shaping and transforming both national economies and individual careers in recent decades. These profound changes have had significant consequences for individual careers of men and women both during and after their employment career. This impressive new collection focuses on the effects of the globalization process on late-midlife workers and the exit from employment – a relationship that has up to now mostly been neglected in social science literature on aging and employment. The research documented within these pages poses several important questions: * Has globalization produced fundamental shifts in late-midlife workers’ labor market participation and late careers? * What transformations in old age career mobility can we observe? * How are these transformations filtered by different national institutional settings? With an impressive array of contributions, this volume will interest students and academics involved in the study of sociology, welfare and globalization.

Book Work Incentives in the Danish Welfare State

Download or read book Work Incentives in the Danish Welfare State written by Gunnar Viby Mogensen and published by Aarhus University Press. This book was released on 1995 with total page 284 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In Denmark, as in other Nordic countries, the period since the 1950s has witnessed the development of a modern welfare state with comprehensive public responsibility for the social well-being of the population. But how does this very fine-meshed safety net affect the labour supply - both on the market for legally registered, taxed labour, and on the market for undeclared 'black' labour? Does the welfare state provide too few incentives for the unemployed to seek work, and for those who are employed to work longer hours? And is it the case that the incentive structure encourages do-it-yourself activities? With the support of the Rockwool Foundation, an extensive research project has been carried out, which methodically combines the results of a representative survey with register data. The results, which are presented in this volume, provide a detailed insight into the links between the tax system and the social legislation of the welfare state on the one hand, and the actual behaviour of the Danish labour force on the other.
