Download or read book A History of the Methodist Episcopal Church Vol 3 Classic Reprint written by Nathan Bangs and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-16 with total page 458 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A History of the Methodist Episcopal Church, Vol. 3 Armed with the panoply thus furnished them, the Wesleyan missionaries who first visited our shores were prepared to promulgate and defend the doctrines and to enforce the discipline of their founder. As before said, however, they mainly insisted on experimental and practical godliness, urging upon all, high and low, rich and poor, the necessity of a change of heart, such a change as should be productive of a reformation of life and conduct, in order to insure everlasting salvation. Instead of exhausting their strength in controversial preaching on those debatable points about which they dif fered from Calvinists, Unitarians, Arians, and Universal iste, they generally contented themselves with a plain and unvarnished statement of their doctrinal views, with urging upon the people experimental and practical reli gion, and with defending themselves when assailed by others. This defence, however, often became necessa ry, more especially in the northern and eastern states, where the people were more accustomed to a critical ex amination of doctrinal points, and questions of doubtful disputation. Book Protestantism in Michigan

Download or read book Protestantism in Michigan written by Elijah H. Pilcher and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-05 with total page 496 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Protestantism in Michigan: Being a Special History of the Methodist Episcopal Church and Incidentally of Other Denominations It is now over twenty years since the idea was entertained by me of writing a History of the introduction and growth of Methodism in this State, and I began to make preparations to do so. I thought I had rare opportunities for such a work, being personally acquainted with the first five persons who made a profession of a Christian experience, and who, with two others, constituted the first Christian Protestant Church in Michigan; and, also, being personally and well acquainted with the minister who was sent here in 1815 - the first after the War of 1812. From these persons the lack of documentary statement was supplied. These persons are all deceased now. Having come into Michigan in 1830, and having been extensively connected with the work at an early day, added to my means of presenting facts, I have continued this work, with various interruptions, to the present day. No one who has never undertaken such a task can form any conception of the difficulty of obtaining accurate information. I might have had this work ready years ago had it not been for a desire to be accurate. I myself have, from time to time, published short sketches, some of which contained errors. This work contains the latest and most accurate information that I have been able to obtain; and if there should, in any case, be found a discrepancy between any of those sketches and this work, this is to be the authority. Book Six Weeks in the Sioux Tepees

Download or read book Six Weeks in the Sioux Tepees written by Sarah F. Wakefield and published by University of Oklahoma Press. This book was released on 2015-01-28 with total page 187 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Dakota War (1862) was a searing event in Minnesota history as well as a signal event in the lives of Dakota people. Sarah F. Wakefield was caught up in this revolt. A young doctor’s wife and the mother of two small children, Wakefield published her unusual account of the war and her captivity shortly after the hanging of thirty-eight Dakotas accused of participation in the "Sioux uprising." Among those hanged were Chaska (We-Chank-Wash-ta-don-pee), a Mdewakanton Dakota who had protected her and her children during the upheaval. In a distinctive and compelling voice, Wakefield blames the government for the war and then relates her and her family’s ordeal, as well as Chaska’s and his family’s help and ultimate sacrifice. This is the first fully annotated modern edition of Six Weeks in the Sioux Tepees. June Namias’s extensive introduction and notes describe the historical and ethnographic background of Dakota-white relations in Minnesota and place Wakefield’s narrative in the context of other captivity narratives.
