Download or read book Science Be Dammed written by Eric Kuhn and published by University of Arizona Press. This book was released on 2019-11-26 with total page 289 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Science Be Dammed is an alarming reminder of the high stakes in the management—and perils in the mismanagement—of water in the western United States. It seems deceptively simple: even when clear evidence was available that the Colorado River could not sustain ambitious dreaming and planning by decision-makers throughout the twentieth century, river planners and political operatives irresponsibly made the least sustainable and most dangerous long-term decisions. Arguing that the science of the early twentieth century can shed new light on the mistakes at the heart of the over-allocation of the Colorado River, authors Eric Kuhn and John Fleck delve into rarely reported early studies, showing that scientists warned as early as the 1920s that there was not enough water for the farms and cities boosters wanted to build. Contrary to a common myth that the authors of the Colorado River Compact did the best they could with limited information, Kuhn and Fleck show that development boosters selectively chose the information needed to support their dreams, ignoring inconvenient science that suggested a more cautious approach. Today water managers are struggling to come to terms with the mistakes of the past. Focused on both science and policy, Kuhn and Fleck unravel the tangled web that has constructed the current crisis. With key decisions being made now, including negotiations for rules governing how the Colorado River water will be used after 2026, Science Be Dammed offers a clear-eyed path forward by looking back. Understanding how mistakes were made is crucial to understanding our contemporary problems. Science Be Dammed offers important lessons in the age of climate change about the necessity of seeking out the best science to support the decisions we make.

Download or read book An Introduction to Modern Cosmology written by Andrew Liddle and published by John Wiley & Sons. This book was released on 2015-07-07 with total page 200 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An Introduction to Modern Cosmology Third Edition is an accessible account of modern cosmological ideas. The Big Bang Cosmology is explored, looking at its observational successes in explaining the expansion of the Universe, the existence and properties of the cosmic microwave background, and the origin of light elements in the universe. Properties of the very early Universe are also covered, including the motivation for a rapid period of expansion known as cosmological inflation. The third edition brings this established undergraduate textbook up-to-date with the rapidly evolving observational situation. This fully revised edition of a bestseller takes an approach which is grounded in physics with a logical flow of chapters leading the reader from basic ideas of the expansion described by the Friedman equations to some of the more advanced ideas about the early universe. It also incorporates up-to-date results from the Planck mission, which imaged the anisotropies of the Cosmic Microwave Background radiation over the whole sky. The Advanced Topic sections present subjects with more detailed mathematical approaches to give greater depth to discussions. Student problems with hints for solving them and numerical answers are embedded in the chapters to facilitate the reader’s understanding and learning. Cosmology is now part of the core in many degree programs. This current, clear and concise introductory text is relevant to a wide range of astronomy programs worldwide and is essential reading for undergraduates and Masters students, as well as anyone starting research in cosmology. Download or read book Air Force Enlisted Force Management written by Michael Schiefer and published by Rand Corporation. This book was released on 2007 with total page 179 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A fundamental goal of the Air Force personnel system is to ensure that the manpower inventory, by Air Force specialty code and grade, matches requirements. However, there are structural obstacles that impede achieving this goal. The three major independently managed systems the Air Force uses to determine manpower strength currently tend to function in isolation. Because the current organizational structure lacks broad coordinating and control mechanisms, actions taken to control one system often adversely affect another. The authors lay the foundation for a discussion of policy changes that would better synchronize these systems. They propose a methodology that would marginally modify grade authorizations within skill levels to make it possible to better achieve manpower targets. Each specialty would retain the same number of authorizations within each skill level, and the aggregate solution would maintain the same total number of enlisted authorizations by grade. This would help the manpower community follow the policy of equal selection opportunity while also taking personnel management system capabilities into account.
Download or read book AUP New Poets 4 written by Harry Jones and published by Auckland University Press. This book was released on 2013-11-01 with total page 100 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The latest in the series, this fourth volume showcases poetry from three very disparate voices: Harry Jones, Erin Scudder, and Chris Tse. Harry Jones's flair for lyric is palpable in his accomplished and elegant poetry. Erin Scudder writes sophisticated, dark, and flavorful pieces that focus on the sound and shape of words. Personal and universal at the same time, her work is specific yet interested in archetypes and tropes. Chris Tse draws from his family history and Chinese heritage to produce fascinating narrative poems. Tse's great grandparents' emigration to New Zealand and his own childhood experiences became sources of inspiration for the third poet in this compilation.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: If you're on the internet, you're global-HubSpot executive Nataly Kelly offers an innovative data-driven model for profitably expanding the international presence you already have. Companies looking to expand used to think about entering international markets, but today you're global from the moment you create a website. Nataly Kelly, VP of Localization at Hubspot (which operates in more than 120 countries) says now the goal should be market intensification-building on the presence you already have. Kelly's MARACA model enables companies to distill the mass amounts of data available to determine if, how, and where they should expand by looking at three key areas of measurement: MA: market availability-the size of the market opportunity within a given country RA: real-time analytics-data indicating how your company is currently performing in that market CA : customer addressability-the measure of your company's ability to address the market, no matter its size The book is based on Kelly's experiences with building a global business both at HubSpot and as a consultant, but also contains numerous examples from successful global companies of various sizes, such as Airbnb, Canva, Dashlane, GoStudent, Facebook, LinkedIn, Lottie Dolls, Netflix, Revolut, Teamwork, and Zoom. Including information on building a globally minded corporate culture, this is a complete strategic guide to discovering international growth opportunities.
