Book excerpt: The Great Tragedy Of Euripides And The Advent Of Marlowe And Shakespeare To The Elizabethan Stage, There Seems To Be A Dismal Reign Of Chaos And Old Night . But The Darkness Is Not Really So Black As It Appears At First Sight And The Burst Of Splendour In Periclean Athens Not Completely Separated From The Renewed Glories Of Elizabethan England. Between The Two We May Discern A Line Of Dimly-Glowing Sparks, Never Entirely Disconnected From The Original Source Of Light And Heat. Seneca, Who Pillaged All The Great Masters Of Greek Tragedy, May Be Compared To A Damp And Crackling Torch Which Gave Off More Smoke And Sputter Than Warmth And Brightness, But He Still Served As A Conveyer Of The Sacred Fire. The Senecan Tragedy Gave The Renaissance A Point Of Departure For A New Form Of Art, Widely Divergent From Classical Tradition, Although Indebted To It For Some Important Details, And One All-Important Principle Regularity Of Structure Which, From All Appearances, It Would Have Taken Centuries For Mediaeval Drama To Attain Without The Stimulus And Authority Of Classical Example. The Renaissance Conception Of Tragedy, Moreover, Was Influenced By The Ideas Which Had Been Inherited From The Middle Ages.

Book The Tragic Histories of Mary Queen of Scots 1560 1690

Download or read book The Tragic Histories of Mary Queen of Scots 1560 1690 written by John D. Staines and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2016-12-05 with total page 284 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Author John Staines here argues that sixteenth- and seventeenth-century writers in England, Scotland, and France wrote tragedies of the Queen of Scots - royal heroine or tyrant, martyr or whore - in order to move their audiences towards political action by shaping and directing the passions generated by the spectacle of her fall. In following the retellings of her history from her lifetime through the revolutions and political experiments of the seventeenth century, this study identifies two basic literary traditions of her tragedy: one conservative, sentimental, and royalist, the other radical, skeptical, and republican. Staines provides new readings of Spenser and Milton, as well as of early modern dramatists, to compile a comprehensive study of the writings about this important historical and literary figure. He charts developments in public rhetoric and political writing from the Elizabethan period through the Restoration, using the emotional representations of the life of this tragic woman and queen to explore early modern experiments in addressing and moving a public audience. By exploring the writing and rewriting of the tragic histories of the Queen of Scots, this book reveals the importance of literature as a force in the redefinition of British political life between 1560 and 1690.

Book Otherworldly John Dryden

Download or read book Otherworldly John Dryden written by Jack M. Armistead and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2016-05-13 with total page 198 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Reminding readers of John Dryden’s persistent use of occult rhetoric, Jack M. Armistead argues that Dryden’s otherworldliness involves more than Christian apologetics, biblical typology, or intermittent borrowings from the supernatural materials in classical literature. Rather, it manifests throughout his career in occult materials drawn from many traditions, including but going well beyond the standard classical and Christian ones. As Armistead shows, Dryden’s practice of juxtaposing pre- and post-scientific treatments of such occult topics as alchemy, astrology, and demonology pervades many of his poems and plays. In its engagement with works such as The Indian Queen, Annus Mirabilis, All for Love, and Absalom and Achitophel, among many others, Otherworldly John Dryden not only enhances our understanding of Dryden’s works, but also tracks the writer’s attitudes about Providence and the ability of the poet to perceive a hidden design in earthly events.
