Book excerpt: Solar X-ray, extreme ultraviolet, H[alpha] and radio emission were studies to determine what solar radiation is best suited for an automatic flare alarm system aboard a satellite for the detection of the start of a solar flare. Although hard X-rays ([lambda] “1 Å), centimeter-wavelength solar radio bursts, and flashes at certain EUV wavelengths usually have faster rise times and peak earlier than soft X-rays in the 2-16 Å range, the data available to date show that on the average the start time of the 2-16 Å X-rays occurs earlier than the start times for these other types of data. The early start times and large percentage increase of 2-16 Å X-rays make this radiation the best suited for the automatic detection of solar flares for the present state of the art of solar radiation measurements.

Book excerpt: An extensive data base consisting of VLF records for 130 different propagation paths over a 2-year period was analyzed statistically to study the correlation of VLF propagation changes with solar X-ray events recorded by satellites. Results of the study indicate that with reasonable restrictions on path illumination conditions, it is possible to detect and classify solar X-ray flares, in near realtime, by proper interpretation of VLF phase and amplitude variations. A method of calibrating VLF paths for this purpose is discussed, and a possible global network of receiving stations capable of 24-hr per day monitoring of solar X-rays is described.

They consist of sudden energy release from reconfiguration of magnetic fields, leading to acceleration of particles to relativistic energies. The Fermi Large Area Telescope (LAT) gamma-ray observations of the Sun present a unique opportunity to explore the mechanisms of high-energy emission as well as particle acceleration and transport in solar flares. I will present the results of the first 9 years of observations of the active Sun by the Fermi-LAT, which represents the largest sample to date of detected solar flares with emission greater than 30 MeV. Some of the new detections confirm the standard models for solar flares based on observations from past missions in the 1980s and 90s, but new behaviors have also been identified: detections of delayed gamma-ray emission lasting up to 20 hours and the first detection of gamma-ray emission above 100 MeV from three solar flares originating from behind the visible part of the Sun. Considering all of the 46 flares detected by the Fermi-LAT, I will describe the characteristics of the first gamma-ray solar flare catalog covering Solar Cycle 24, exploring trends and correlations with the most relevant solar events: X-ray emission, coronal mass ejections, and direct detection of solar energetic particles.

Book excerpt: Over the last decade we entered a new exploration phase of solar flare physics, equipped with powerful spacecraft such as Yohkoh, SoHO, and TRACE that pro vide us detail-rich and high-resolution images of solar flares in soft X-rays, hard X -rays, and extreme-ultraviolet wavelengths. Moreover, the large-area and high sensitivity detectors on the Compton GRO spacecraft recorded an unprecedented number of high-energy photons from solar flares that surpasses all detected high energy sources taken together from the rest of the universe, for which CGRO was mainly designed to explore. However, morphological descriptions of these beau tiful pictures and statistical catalogs of these huge archives of solar data would not convey us much understanding of the underlying physics, if we would not set out to quantify physical parameters from these data and would not subject these measurements to theoretical models. Historically, there has always been an unsatisfactory gap between traditional astronomy that dutifully describes the mor phology of observations, and the newer approach of astrophysics, which starts with physical concepts from first principles and analyzes astronomical data with the goal to confirm or disprove theoretical models. In this review we attempt to bridge this yawning gap and aim to present the recent developments in solar flare high-energy physics from a physical point of view, structuring the observations and analysis results according to physical processes, such as particle acceleration, propagation, energy loss, kinematics, and radiation signatures.

Particles are accelerated to very high velocities and a variety of physical processes happen inside and outside flares. These processes can be studied by a large number of techniques from Earth and from space. The aim is to discover the physics behind solar flares. This goal is complicated because information about the flare mechanism can be obtained only in an indirect way by studying the secondary effects. This book provides three stages in the solution of the solar flare problem. Chapter one describes the connection between observational data and theoretical concepts, where it is stressed that next to investigating flares, the related non-stationary large-scale phenomena must be studied as well. The second chapter deals with secondary physical processes, in particular the study of high-temperature plasma dynamics during impulsive heating. The last chapter presents a model built on the knowledge of the two previous chapters and it constructs a theory of non-neutral turbulent current sheets. The author believes that this model will help to solve the problem of solar flares. For solar physicists, plasma physicists, high-energy particle physicists.

Both of them are of actual scientific interest and are based on processing GNSS data. The first part of this thesis is devoted to GNSS detection and monitoring of solar flares. The second one is devoted to GNSS prediction of ionospheric Total Electron Content. Regarding the first study, a new solar flare detector called SISTED has been designed and implemented. Its goal is to provide a simple and efficient way of detecting the most number of powerful X-class solar flares in real time operation. In addition, it can send early warning messages to prevent the harmful consequences of the increase of ejected particles from the Sun that may reach the Earth after a solar flare, especially in case of a Coronal Mass Ejection. The main benefit of SISTED regarding other detection techniques is that it does not require data from external providers out of the GNSS community. In addition, it can run in real-time operation and could provide value added data to GNSS users. The results show that SISTED was able to detect up to the 95% of the X-class flares reported by GOES for more than a half solar cycle. Regarding the second study, a new approach to predict Global Ionospheric vertical TEC Maps has been designed and implemented in the context of the IGS Ionosphere Working Group. The motivation to develop a UPC Predicted product was the interest of ESA's SMOS mission. A recent application using UPC Predicted products is the generation of real-time global VTEC maps as background model. In addition, the predicted VTEC maps are used to generate the combined IGS Predicted products. The results obtained in this thesis show that the model performs well when the results are compared with those obtained by the other IGS analysis centers. In addition, applying the prediction model leads to better results than the use of time-invariant ionosphere for two days ahead. In relation with this research, 4 publications in international journals indexed in JCR/ISI have been generated (and another one is under review process), and 7 presentations have been authored in international meetings, among the new UPC predicted product contributing to IGS, and the contribution to two competitive projects funded by the European Space Agency (AGIM and MONITOR).

Book excerpt: This report describes a radio investigation of traveling ionospheric disturbances carried out near Boulder, Colorado, over a 1-year period from June 1967 to June 1968. The three-dimensional motions of F2 layer disturbances were measured by the high frequency Doppler technique with spaced transmitters and at several probing frequencies. Horizontal motions were determined by cross-correlating three signals on frequencies near 5 MHz, whose reflection points were approximately at the corners of a horizontal equilateral triangle with 40-km sides. Vertical motions were determined from cross-correlation of signals on frequencies of 3.3, 4.0, and 5.1 MHz, whose reflection points were aligned vertically.
