Among these are portraits of Benjamin Van Cleve, Colonel George Newcom and his daughter, Mrs. Jane Wilson, a view of Main Street in 1855 from a water-color by John W.Van Cleve, and a copy of the original plan of the city as found in the records of Hamilton County. For these portraits and the view of Main Street the publisher desires to acknowledge his obligation to Mrs. Thomas Dover, Mrs. Josiah Gebhart, and Miss Martha Holt, in whose possession are the valuable originals, and by whose courtesy they are here reproduced. The children of to-day should become acquainted with the past, and duly recognize the planning and struggles that have made present advantages possible. Besides, every one who is to become a useful citizen must be led to cherish a local pride and public spirit such as a worthy celebration of the founding and growth of the city will surely tend to promote. The Board of Education have therefore provided that necessary books be supplied to the various schools and that a souvenir booklet containing an outline history of the city be put into the hands of each teacher and pupil. Class exercises, covering the history of Dayton and extending through a number of weeks, will be conducted by the teachers, the course to be followed with a suitable celebration in all of the schools. Through the kindness of Miss Mary D.Steele, author of the volume entitled "Early Dayton," and of Mr. W. J. Book excerpt: In 1789, plans were made for a settlement near the mouth of what is now known as Mad River. The proposed name for the site was Venice, and the river was to be named Tiber. The deed was executed and recorded, and the village of Venice was laid out on paper. But Indian troubles and some misunderstandings with the landowner and the government led to the abandonment of the project. Fortunately, a treaty was signed with the Indians six years later, and in 1796, three parties set out from Cincinnati for the newly-named settlement of Dayton. One hundred years later, Dayton was a modern city, its citizens open to innovative ideas, but still proud of their past. The Main Street Bridge was one of the first concrete bridges in the United States. Cash registers, invented in Dayton, were in stores throughout the world. Yet time was taken to save the city's oldest structure, Newcom Tavern, and place it near where the first settlers of Dayton had come ashore. In 2014, Newcom Tavern underwent a $100,000 exterior renovation. As it was in 1896, so it is today; a symbol of how, from such humble beginnings, a great city can rise.
