Book An Introduction to the Early History of Christian Doctrine

Download or read book An Introduction to the Early History of Christian Doctrine written by J. F. BETHUNE-BAKER and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-10-12 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from An Introduction to the Early History of Christian Doctrine: To the Time of the Council of Chalcedon IN the preparation of this volume the writer has been guided by the general purpose of the Series of Theological Handbooks of which it is a part. A continuous narrative is given in the text, with as much freedom from technical treatment as the subject allows; details and authorities are relegated to footnotes, and some special questions and difficulties are dealt with in notes appended to the several chapters. The chief aim which has been kept in View throughout has been to offer to the student of the history of Christian Doctrine during the first four centuries of the life of the Church such information with regard to the facts and the sources as will enable him to prosecute his study for himself. It is only a limited period with which the book deals, but a period in which the Christian theory of life - oi the relations between God, the World, and Man - was worked out in its chief aspects, and all the doctrines to which the Church of Christ as a whole is pledged were framed. The 'authority' of these doctrines is only to be understood by study of their history. Their permanent value can only be appreciated by knowledge of the circumstances in which they came to be expressed, knowledge which must certainly precede any restatement of the doctrines, such as is from time to time demanded in the interests of a growing or a wider faith. Book Early Christian Doctrines

Download or read book Early Christian Doctrines written by J. N. D. Kelly and published by A&C Black. This book was released on 2000-11-20 with total page 532 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "A history of doctrines of the early Church, written and arranged with exceptional clarity by a leading patristic scholar, the principal of St. Edmund Hall, Oxford. Canon Kelly describes the development of the principal Christian doctrines from the close of the first century to the middle of the fifth, and from the end of the apostolic age to the council of Chalcedon. His book thus covers the great doctrinally creative period in the Church's history, the centuries in which there was a constant upsurge of fresh ideas before the settled formalism of both the East and West. He gives the student and invaluable outline of Church history and patrology against which to place the evolving theological doctrines which he summarises and expounds" -- Back cover.

This book was released on 2015-07-03 with total page 426 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A History of Christian Doctrine, Vol. 1 The History of Christian Doctrine here given to the public is the result of several years of investigation, while the author held the professorship of Ecclesiastical History in the Theological Seminary at Andover, Massachusetts. As this is the first attempt of the kind in English literature, to write an account of the gradual construction of all the doctrines of the Christian religion, he had no models before him, and was compelled to originate his own method. Upon a survey of the vast field, it appeared to be the most simple and perspicuous plan to investigate each of the principal subjects by itself, starting from the first beginnings of scientific reflection upon it, and going down to the latest and most complete forms of statement. Book Outlines of Christian Doctrine Classic Reprint

Download or read book Outlines of Christian Doctrine Classic Reprint written by Handley Carr Glyn Moule and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-10-12 with total page 312 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Outlines of Christian Doctrine In the form of 8. Commentary upon the thirty-nine Articles. As the work proceeded the author was led to think that a sketch of the main doctrines of the Faith might be more generally useful, which, while always keeping in view the great historic Confession of the Church of which he thanks God he is a son and presbyter, should omit some topics contained in it and deal with others in a way somewhat different from that of a commentary. The work makes not the least pretension either to originality or to fulness. It will have well served its purpose if in any degree it can stimulate its readers to personal study, and suggest lines for work and thought. Book excerpt: Excerpt from History of Christian Doctrine, Vol. 1 of 2 A still further analogy may be predicated. The starry heavens challenge study and interpretation, in the course of which difficult questions are likely to be raised, and upon these conflicting answers may be, and indeed often have been elicited. In like manner the Scriptures chal lenge study and interpretation. In many instances they suggest much more than they expressly state. What they give in the shape of historical facts is often fitted to serve as a basis for a whole train Of inferences respecting the divine kingdom. So the mind is sent off upon far-reaching paths. What it finds in the pursuit of one topic it natu rally wishes to compare with the results of its inquiry upon other topics. Hence theological disquisition, definition. Book The Development of Doctrine in the Early Church

Download or read book The Development of Doctrine in the Early Church written by John S. Banks and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2016-08-05 with total page 242 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Development of Doctrine in the Early Church: Author of Manual of Christian Doctrine"; "Scripture and Its Witnesses" The Roman Catholic Church, in keeping with its view of the Church as the divine interpreter of God's will on earth, regards the decisions of General Councils (in later ages these were under its own direction) as obligatory. The Greek Church takes the same attitude in regard to the early Councils. All other Churches hold themselves free on the question, although they differ in the amount of deference shown to early Church authority. The Anglican Church, which pays the greatest regard to that authority, says in its Articles that General Councils have erred. It may be said that the evangelical Free Churches hold by the substance of the three Creeds, although they may criticise the terms. The Reformation made no change inthis respect: Its controversies turned on doctrines of another class. Ittacitly accepted the system of doctrine defined in the three Creeds, The same is true of evangelical churches generally. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Christian Doctrine of Faith This is not a theological treatise on the one hand, nor on the other is it a volume of sermons. Like its predecessor, the volume on Prayer, it has a distinct office to fulfil, an office that in the judgment of the editor is of immense importance. For between the professor's lecture-room and the preacher's study there is a great gulf fixed. In the lecture-room the lectures on systematic theology are laboriously entered into notebooks, which are useful for the exit examinations. But when the active work of the ministry begins, and so many sermons have to be prepared every week, the cupboard into which those notebooks have been stowed away is left undisturbed. The preacher begins to Spin his sermons out of his own brains, with the assistance of such popular books as happen to be at his hand.
